View Full Version : How thick are your ends?
July 10th, 2008, 03:22 PM
This is something I have been curious about for a while now. I am wanting to know what the average thickness of the ends of the hair are in comparison to the ponytail circumference.
For example if you have a 3 inch ponytail, and your ends are 2 inches in circumference you would have 66.66% of your ponytail thickness. I am wanting to know this because I am curious as to what actually constitutes thinning and excessive shedding from a normal taper. It would also be helpful if you state your hair length, the condition of your hair and/or any other things that might have impacted the thickness. Thanks!
July 10th, 2008, 03:42 PM
Mine are the same. My hair is only shoulder length, though :D
July 10th, 2008, 03:49 PM
I have fairytale ends that taper to nothing, so at first I thought 0%. Then I realized that 1% of my ponytail circumference would be slightly less than a millimeter and those 5-10 hairs at my very ends could probably have that circumference, though it's not measureable. So I voted for the 1-20% option. My hair is about hip length.
ETA: I forgot to mention that I had lots of random breakage throughout my entire length before I found LHC, and I'm still dealing with white dots/breakage at the ends, although it has improved a lot. I would have had thicker ends at this length if I had had undamaged hair.
July 10th, 2008, 04:05 PM
I trimmed a couple of months ago, so that makes my ends a bit thicker. My ponytail is about 3.25 - 3.5" and right at the very tips, it measures about .5". If I go back a couple inches, my ends are considerably thicker at about 1.5". I think I'll vote for the 1-20% option.
July 10th, 2008, 04:10 PM
My hair is hip length, the top part of the ponytail is just getting over 4 inches even because my bangs are growing out. And the end of the tassel I have from my braid right now is 3.7 inches. I can braid all the way to the end for the first time ever!
I busted my butt/cut a lot of hair up to grow out layers to get it like this, though.
Edit- shoot, I didn't divide properly and voted in the 61-80 category. Pretend I'm in the next one! Brainfart.
July 10th, 2008, 05:37 PM
I'm not sure mine will be really authentic as I'm currently growing out most of my bangs. Therefore, the base of my ponytail has more hair than the ends due to the fact my bangs just pass my chin right now. My ponytail is 4.5, and the ends right now seem to be 2, but they are wet, so I can't really tell.
July 10th, 2008, 06:22 PM
My ponytail is 3 3/16" and the ends are just 13/16". My maths gives me just under 25%. This is the main thing I'd like to change as I'm keeping it at this length now, so I'm hoping the ends will thicken up with better care over time.
July 10th, 2008, 06:23 PM
Thickness of cheese, I have purposeful layers.
July 10th, 2008, 06:48 PM
Interesting poll. My ponytail is 2.75", the end is .75". I voted 1-20%, but I HATE math, so not sure if that's right. My brain does not want to do math right now. It CAN do math, but doesn't feel like it right now.
My hair is totally messed up. I lost the entire back bottom half to radiation, then I lost half of the volume of the rest of my hair to chemotherapy treatment. The bottom bald half is growing in and can now be included in the ponytail measurement, but that layer is about 10" from the real ends of my hair. Lots of new baby hair growing in, too. So I have wonky layers all over the place---good thing it's curly; it hides it well.
July 10th, 2008, 07:41 PM
Thanks for the replies so far! It's been very interesting to me. I am such a geek. There seems to be a relationship in general between the length of the hair and what category people chose. I think I'm going to plot the points on a graph. :) Of course the more replies the more accurate the results will be to determine where the bell curve lies. :)
July 10th, 2008, 08:12 PM
With a couple of recent trims of about 3" my hair is a couple of inches shy of waist length. I voted 41-60%.
July 10th, 2008, 09:52 PM
I'm 3.25" at the nape and 1.5" 4" from the ends of my hair. So that makes them 46% as thick as my nape.
July 10th, 2008, 09:58 PM
ergh. i hate math and it's late so i won't do the percentage.
i'm 4.25" at the nape and 3.75" at the ends. or thereabouts.
July 11th, 2008, 12:59 AM
My ends are about as thick as cheese!
July 11th, 2008, 01:13 AM
Well I'm going through a massive shedding, and my ends were fairytaled to started with. I'd say they're now as thin as the air in thermosphere (near vacuum). :D I think I need to chop a few inches to have clearly visible ends again.
Oh I've always known I have short terminal length, so this isn't unexpected.
July 11th, 2008, 01:50 AM
I had to vote for 1-20% but I'd rather vote for cheese. Cheese is amazing LOL!
July 11th, 2008, 02:15 AM
I'm thinking I should have voted for cheese, too. Since I can't divide, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
July 11th, 2008, 03:09 AM
My hair's at classic length, 3.5" at the nape and 1" at the top of my braid tassel, 4" from the ends. So I'm in the 21-40% category, if my calculations are correct - maths is not one of my strengths.
I've been growing out layers, and I think they're all gone now. Or are they? :hmm:
July 11th, 2008, 06:49 AM
Mine are the same. My hair is only shoulder length, though :D
Same here. :o
July 11th, 2008, 06:59 AM
My nape thickness is 4", it drops to 2" by about 5 or 6" from the ends, and the very ends are 0.75". My hair is hip length and I'm growing out old layers. Good idea for a poll!
ETA I answered 1-20% based on the results at the very ends.
July 11th, 2008, 11:09 AM
To me my ends are the bottom 10cm of my hair. The very ends are under 10% (0.8) and the thickest part ist just 20%
But even if you go up higher there is not drastic thickening any time soon.:o
July 11th, 2008, 11:16 AM
My hair is close to 30" (Guessing, because I haven't mesured in ages!) and I can braid all the way to the ends.
My hair is around 3" at nape and still over 2" at my braid tassle, about an inch up from the tippy tip of the ends.
I don't seem to get to much taper yet, the difference is mostly because of layers.
July 11th, 2008, 06:00 PM
My pony circumference is currently 3.9" (slightly thicker than last measure! :cheese: ). My ends are about 1.5" circumference, so that makes it about 40%. I'm growing out bangs and keeping some layers, and I'm currently a couple of inches past BSL.
July 11th, 2008, 08:37 PM
My hair is a braid looks like a carrot, fattish at the top, but thin at the bottom!
July 11th, 2008, 10:20 PM
Due to some massive shedding recently, my pony is down to 4 1/16 inches. It goes down to 1.25 inches, so that's about 31%. But I do have lots of purposeful layers.
July 11th, 2008, 10:36 PM
My hair is just over 4 inches at the nape; and waist length. A few inches up from the tippy ends, it is about 2 1/2 inches (where the braid tassel would be starting) . So I voted 41- 60%. The tippy ends are about an inch. I am growing out a few layers about 4 inches from the hemline. And I also have a large sideswept bang - so once all that grows out, I assume it will be thicker.
Great idea about plotting the results on a graph, BTW!
July 12th, 2008, 05:22 AM
The thickness of the ends are almost as thick as the ponytailcircumference.
July 12th, 2008, 06:00 AM
Mine are just under half, but this is because I'm still growing out layers. My ends are thinner because there is only "bottom layer" hair in that part. :) I'll have to measure again when the layering has gone. I have a feeling it will remain stubbornly thick all the way down, at least for now. Maybe when it's longer it'll start to taper (I hope so! I want fairytales!)
July 12th, 2008, 06:34 AM
I don't know and I don't want to know... My ends feels so thin :(
July 12th, 2008, 06:41 AM
Are you looking for statistics on taper and such?
My real ends are much, much thinner than my pony circumference (pony 6.5", ends maybe 1") but I have a huge layer about 1" from the end of my hair which takes out most of the volume. If I measure above that, then it's 4" or 5".
July 12th, 2008, 07:09 AM
My pony tail circumference is sitting right at about 3.5 inches, but the ends (I have a blunt hemline) taper to .5 inches, so I voted 1-20%. My hair is tailbone length.
July 12th, 2008, 08:55 AM
My hair is between APL and BSL and is 4.5 pony and 3 ' at the ends. I have lots of layers that dont fit into either measurement though
July 14th, 2008, 01:10 AM
I have fairytale ends which thin out to practically nothing. My thin ends are more a product of no trimming rather than the length, though, as I haven't trimmed my hair in about seven years. I like my taper much better than hair that stays thick down the entire length, but in less than 2 years, I'll have to strat trimming my hair to keep it off the ground, which means no more fairytales. :-(
July 14th, 2008, 01:19 AM
Well, I am still growing out layers, so the bottom 2 inches or so of my hair is very thin.
Since coming to LHC my circumference has thickened a lot; from 1.5 inches to about 2.5 inches. My hair is currently 26 inches - not quite BSL. My severely tapered ends are not measurable - several mm, so I voted 1-20%.
July 14th, 2008, 01:41 AM
Haha, i'm so funny.....read on.
Since my ends bother me so much i drew an image of a head of hair and then i tapered it, and measured mathamatically different thicknesses of the taper. I then decided that 2/5 is the absolute thinnest i wanted my ends to be- judging by the drawings).
I then measured from APL, BSL, WL, the circumfrance of my hair.
And i got the 2/5th measurment comparing to me NAPE (the imaged were comparing to the top of the head...now that i realise, which means...i mucked up somewhere ops!) Anyways- doing that i discovered that my hair at APL was 2/5ths!!!!
So really the ends of my hair was something like .3/5 - even though that makes no sence and i just realised NOW that i ruined it....I think. Anyway. I voted 1-20% obviously! :)
July 14th, 2008, 12:35 PM
My hair is in good condition, virgin, but I have some layers. This is why I have ~ 50% taper. Honestly, I don't mind it at all.
August 22nd, 2008, 07:34 PM
I'm 3.25 at the top and .25 at the bottom, so 13%. I'm not happy with that because it has changed so much in the few years I've been in Korea. Here's hoping that going home to America next year will help out my poor hair!
Oh, and my hair is lower thigh length.
August 22nd, 2008, 08:17 PM
My poor hair tapers off into nothingness. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p64/maknana/smilies/pullingouthair-1.gif
I voted 1-20%. I don't think it's even that thick though!
August 22nd, 2008, 08:34 PM
My ends are a whooping 11.76% of the thickness my nape measures. It's goes from 4.25" down to .5". Although most of the taper is between waist (3" thick) and the ends. But the numbers might be a bit off because my hairs not as fluffy as it normally is.
Fun chart for those of you who are into charts:
August 22nd, 2008, 08:41 PM
My hair tapers down fairly evenly to one hair at the end. It doesn't bother me, though - it just seems normal. I like fairy tale ends! :magic:
August 29th, 2008, 01:51 PM
Pony tail is 3.5" and the ends are 1.3". My hair is right between waist and hip.
August 30th, 2008, 09:34 AM
I saw this thread earlier and it made me curious, so I had to come back and post my results now that I've had a chance to measure. At nape, my hair is 3.5" (9cm) and at the ends 2.5" (7.4 cm), which my calculator tells me is ~80%. My hair is waist length, and the taper is very gradual.
August 30th, 2008, 12:40 PM
My ponytail is 3"7/8 and my ends are 2"6/8 so it's about 50% but the ends actually look really thick because of my wavy/curly hair.
September 1st, 2008, 08:15 AM
Fairytaled ends, 1% as I have about 30 hairs down there. 4 inches at the nape to about 300 micrometers at the ends.
September 1st, 2008, 11:03 AM
My ponytail circ. is 6.5 cm
The ends are 2 cm
September 1st, 2008, 03:03 PM
My ends are very thin due to damage. I keep them trimmed on a regular basis, but they are still a lot thinner than the base of my pony tail.
September 12th, 2008, 08:05 AM
My ponytail at nape is 4" and ends are 1.2". I have a sudden taper midway because i started with thin hair in the beginning. I am slowly trying to get rid of the taper by regular trim.
September 12th, 2008, 03:31 PM
Thickness at nape = 7.5 cm = 3"
Ends are very thin and hard to measure circumference, I think its about 1cm, under half an inch.
I'm at approximately waist.
I have just recently started trimming after nearly 3 years without trimming though, so I hope it gets better.
September 12th, 2008, 03:32 PM
I have to trim my hair every 2-3 weeks cause it grows VERY fast. So my ends are the same as the rest of my hair.
September 12th, 2008, 04:09 PM
I have my hair heavily layered on purpose, so I'm going with "thickness of cheese."
September 15th, 2008, 01:18 AM
My ponytail is 5.25" and the ends are just under 4.5"
September 15th, 2008, 06:31 PM
My hair is 29-30 inches, and the end part is just a little smaller than a measure at the nape. I'm still growing out layers -- otherwise, they'd be pretty close.
September 15th, 2008, 06:38 PM
My ponytail is close to 4" and my hair is mid-thigh and nearly fairytale, so I voted for 1-20%. I didn't measure the circumference at the end because it's too thin to easily measure!
September 15th, 2008, 07:39 PM
TBL (39"), and fairytaled (I'm a non-trimmer)
September 16th, 2008, 04:32 AM
I'm at waist length, with the natural shape (the V shape, you see). No trim during 4 years, so the ends are tapered and of course thinner than the ponytail.
September 16th, 2008, 01:07 PM
My ponytail is about 4.5" and my ends are a bit over 2", so 45-50%. I have a blunt cut, but I have a lot of damage that has given me some taper.
September 16th, 2008, 01:21 PM
I am at about 30%, and about BSL curly hair.
September 22nd, 2008, 02:10 AM
My ponytail is 2.5" and ends 1" or 40%. Length is around 23", condition from the ears down is bad from dye, elastics and generally rough handling, had a massive shed about 6 months ago and not all my regrowth goes into the ponytail. I get trims every 2 months but do have light layering at the front which is long enough to go into the ponytail.
September 22nd, 2008, 05:43 AM
Interesting poll. I'll measure next time I do a ponytail and post :)
September 29th, 2008, 08:13 PM
My hair also tapers down to 1 strand. My shortest lengths of my hair are what used to be my bangs, and they reach my hip bones and my longest few hairs reach classic. (I just measured and that is about an 8 - 9 inch difference)
September 29th, 2008, 08:17 PM
My hair is layered, so the ends are much thinner than the base of the ponytail, but most of that's on purpose.
September 29th, 2008, 09:50 PM
Perfect fairytale ends tapering beautifully from all to none towards lower calf. :cloud9:
September 29th, 2008, 10:00 PM
I'm not quite a the bottom of BSL and my ends are already down to about 33% of the nape circumference.
I do have chemical damage at the moment.
Prognosis: Bleak :o
September 30th, 2008, 02:33 AM
I'm at terminal, so my ends are actually at 0%
September 30th, 2008, 10:12 AM
My ends are too thin to easily measure, less than 1/8". I've been putting off a trim for a while.
September 30th, 2008, 10:24 AM
Now my hair is at the length it's reached it seems to stop growing as quick. I think I've hit my terminal length, but there are a lot of hairs that keep advancing, so I end up with very thin ends unless I trim down every six months or so.
September 30th, 2008, 03:49 PM
I have very fine fairytale ends. I actually need a dusting to clean up my hemline. How I wish for some thickness!!
September 30th, 2008, 04:24 PM
I picked cheese because my hair has the thickness of string cheese. My ponytail isn't even 1" in diameter!
September 30th, 2008, 04:38 PM
My hair is between waist and hip, 77 cm (30.3"). My nape circumference is 11 cm (4.3"), my lower ends are at 8 cm (3.1"). My ends measure 5.5 cm (2.2").
My math is not brilliant but I guess my taper is rather low. I had layers but they're nearly gone now, and I had some minor trims in the last months. So my hair begins to taper seriously only in the last quarter of my length were it gets notably thinner.
October 1st, 2008, 06:51 AM
My ends are pretty thin and whispy, always have been, no matter what length I am.
October 1st, 2008, 08:08 AM
I am surprised my ends have stayed as thick as they have been and my hair is as long as it is. They are about 61-80% thick. Could be thicker but could be LOTS thinner so I'm not complaining.
I love my velcro ends! :inlove:
October 2nd, 2008, 02:41 PM
Somewhere within 41 - 60%.
October 18th, 2010, 03:15 AM
It is to thin
October 18th, 2010, 06:54 AM
My ends are probably around 95%-ish. So yeah really thick, which can sometimes be quite annoying.
October 18th, 2010, 07:51 AM
My hip-length hair is pretty consistently thick. It's my choice: I've had it long forever, so I keep it trimmed to blunt ends in a U shape.
October 18th, 2010, 08:11 AM
My hair is heavily layered and I love it that way, but obviously the layers take away from having super thick ends. That being said, my hair is so thick that I don't think it matters. My hemline is still nice and full, as full as some with all one length hair, so I am doing good :)
October 18th, 2010, 08:19 AM
Now my ends are at 14%. Before my 'post birth control pills' shed they were at 22%. My hair was mid-thigh length (for both measurements).
October 18th, 2010, 08:53 AM
46,5 % :)
It's been like a year and half since i last trimmed..
October 18th, 2010, 10:04 AM
Oi, circumference is a lot harsher than diameter! I'm guesstimating I've got about 1 cm circumference close to the ends. Can't measure right now, though. They haven't been trimmed for a month or two, so I'm not about to give you the measurement of the few hairs that protrude farthest! I've got maybe 7cm at the nape, so the hair's way thinner at tailbone!
(If I go up about 4 inches from the ends, it's a lot better...)
October 18th, 2010, 01:48 PM
I would say it's about 50%...maybe less?
October 19th, 2010, 03:39 PM
My hair is pretty thick all the way to the ends- about 80% of my nape ponytail.
October 19th, 2010, 03:57 PM
My hair is pretty thick all the way to the ends- about 80% of my nape ponytail.
Wow thats wonderful! :) I am aiming that kind of thickness..
My ponytail is about 8 cm thick while my ends are 2.5 cm. The math gives 31.2%.
October 19th, 2010, 06:30 PM
3.5 inch ponytail with 1.25 inch ends puts me at about 36% :)
October 19th, 2010, 07:38 PM
2 1/4 inches at nape down to 3/4 of an inch at the tips. Glad to know I am not the only one with a fair bit of tapering.
October 20th, 2010, 01:15 PM
Without actually measuring, I voted 1-20%. My hair still has some layers left at the ends, and with trims only once a year, it's pretty wispy at the end. That's actually what I am working on most now, I was my hair to be thick all the way down (while still gaining length).
October 20th, 2010, 01:41 PM
I picked %21-40. I don't measure, but i can feel the difference is a lot along the length. Even my ponytails vary in diameter :D when i make a pony on top of my head, it's iii and on nape of my neck it drops down to ii.
It's not as little as 1% though.
October 20th, 2010, 01:58 PM
I voted 1-20%.
I actually did the math out, its about 16.6%.Considering my ends are only maybe a third of my hair I'm assuming it'll be around 50% when my layers finish growing out.
October 20th, 2010, 02:02 PM
My base is about 3 3/4" and the end is about 2 3/4 " which is about 73%.
That is pretty good if I do say so myself. I think the major difference is that I'm trying to grow out my massively thick bangs... they are inculding the base of my ponytail but haven't reached the ends, by a long shot! So once those grow out hopefully I'll be around 95%!!!
October 20th, 2010, 02:05 PM
I really have no idea and I don't feel like measuring it right now. It doesn't look much different, but my fingers are telling me it's a little smaller, even though you can't tell. I don't think it's much. *shrug*
October 21st, 2010, 03:42 AM
My hair is the thickness of cheese aka I really do not want to know that. The result of measuring would make me sad probably...
October 21st, 2010, 03:56 AM
My ends taper into nothing so I voted 1-20%. My hair is now just below classic length and still growing so I'm hoping to thicken up my ends once I reach my final goal (fingertip).
October 21st, 2010, 09:53 PM
My hair is about 1 inch from my tail bone and probably less than half as thick as my ponytail but with no natural tapering. I had layers cut in to remove some of the thickness. Still wondering if I should have a trim and get rid of the layers. My braids were a lot prettier back when it was all one length but that was all I would do with my hair.
October 22nd, 2010, 02:05 PM
I'm about three inches past tailbone at this point...My ponytail is 5.5'' and my ends are 2.5'' so that's about 56%.
October 22nd, 2010, 02:25 PM
I have layers, so my ends are thinner at the end of a braid than at the base.
October 22nd, 2010, 04:39 PM
My ponytail circumference at the nape is a wee bit over 4" (4.1 or so measured tightly) and if I put my hair in a ponytail and slide the elastic down to 2" above the very ends of my hair, I get about 2", which makes me extremely happy because before I started self-trimming, my hair was plotting to taper into nothingness. If I measure my braid tassel under the elastic, I get between 2.25 and 2.75 depending on where I tie it off at.
I have layers and bangs that arent't long enough to reach the ends of my hair and I hope that with my regimen of self-dusting once a month I'll be able to thicken them up even more.
ETA: Oh, and my hair is 28" long, which is between waist and hip for me. This is why I love being a munchkin. <3
October 22nd, 2010, 05:41 PM
Barely classic length with a v taper that dwindles down to just a few fairytale thin locks. I've still got a few inches of damage from a perm around 5 years ago that caused a lot of breakage, so the ends really are thin.
October 22nd, 2010, 06:39 PM
My ends taper down to nothing.
November 23rd, 2010, 11:45 AM
My ends are realy awful because once I got great idea of letting my hair prune, so my ends is about 1% of my ponytail circumference
November 23rd, 2010, 12:08 PM
At the nape, my ponytail is just under 3". At the ends, about 1.5. So about 50%.
December 2nd, 2010, 06:20 PM
Cheese: I've got layers which would skew measurements. I can come back and answer in about four years when they are trimmed out...
January 2nd, 2011, 06:29 AM
well, i think my ends are quite good :) ist about 62% of thickness
January 2nd, 2011, 08:16 AM
I voted the 61-80% category because I have layers/bangs growing out, but I expect to be in the next category someday (like I used to be) !
