I saw someone with the most gorgeous updo. I've been searching and searching for what it might be called and how to do it but I can't find anything. Does anyone have any ideas? It was sort of like a woven bun - except it was bigger than a bun, it was more like a round area of loose basket weave and then had a braid around it. I considered that the woven area might be braids but I don't think so - braids make v shapes with the hair and this was perfectly straight looking basket weave. How would this be achieved?

Basketwoven hair is usually done by a stylist. I've never known anyone who could do it on themselves. It calls for precise sectioning, then weaving the various strands as in typical basketweaving. The effect is breathtaking when done correctly. It was popular back in the 70s.

Oh, I probably wouldn't be able to do it on myself. I'm just perplexed that I can't find anything on the internet about how to do it, or a picture even. I found some pictures of basket weave hair, but it was flat and sleek to the head, not in a big round bun shape.

Here is a link to Google image search - basketwoven+hair:

That's exactly what I searched, as well as basket+weave+hair and looked through pages of the images. The ones that look neatly basket woven are sleek and flat to the head. The ones that are in big bun shapes are not neatly basket woven. The hair I saw looked like a pie on the back of the woman's head, with a lattice crust but no space between the strips.

I don't know if any of the styles on this link will help, but just in case, here it is:
