I have prom coming up in a couple of months, and I have been trying to think of hairstyles for it. My hair has just reached waist length in the last month or so (Yay!:)), its naturally straight, but holds braidwaves well. I keep my hair in a braid at night, and either put it in a ponytail, or bun it in the day, so I want something different, without leaving it all down. I dont mind half-up styles, or updos, but i need to be able to do then myself.

Any help would be appreciated

There is an easy Chinese Braided bun tutorial on You Tube by Isabelle Naturelle. Just do a search on Chinese Braided bun.

Well, what does your dress look like? That should help us give you some ideas.

Hmm. I've seen some hairstyles laberled 'Penticostal" on youtube, which seemed pretty prom-appropriate to me. They're pretty elaborate and polished, in my opinion

Hi. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
@Madora, it looks very pretty, but no different really from my usual style. I do braided buns a lot, most often with a chopstick, or commonly a pencil holding it in place. I would like something different.
@ HintOfMint, My dress is floor length, deep red, with a sweetheart neckline, and the back is quite low, with a bow above the waist, and it gathers up on one hip. So i'm thinking I kind of want some hair down, but not all of it.
@FluffSpider Its really beautiful, but as I said above, I would like some hair down. Could be good for a back up plan though.

I have been looking around on youtube a bit, and I was thinking, how about doing a dutch lace crown braid, in kind of headband style with only part of my hair, and leave the rest to hang in kind of braidwaves? Not sure though.
What do you think? Any more suggestions?

When positioned right, I think crown braids can be amazingly beautiful!
You could try to incorporate smaller accent braids(english, herringbone, or rope) into the half-up to make it look a bit more intricate... And maybe some small silk flowers that match your dress?

Or you could to this type of crown (http://www.frenchbraidsbytwistedsisters.com/gayle/gayle01.jpg), it would help keep you neck cool while dancing.

Please post pics of the finished style, we would all love to see what you end up doing. :)

I like the lace braid idea. I really need to see a pic of the dress to give better advice, but I think a lace braid into a low side ponytail with lots of long, loose curls would be awfully pretty.

I just stubbled across this photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frommywebsite/5013445975/), very pretty, but I think this is one of those that someone has to do for you...

I totally love this one... again, this would require help. Bun with ornate textural detail (http://www.flickr.com/photos/frommywebsite/5014049128/in/photostream/)

This is sort of what I was talking about in my previous post: Crown braid with curly ponytail. (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XIG98kNoit0/SiXV1RmP_KI/AAAAAAAAA0E/auxM_zgotKc/s400/molly-sims.jpg)

How much down would be enough? It sounds like your dress is a very classic style, so pretty much any updo that would look good with a tiara is good (which means you have approximately a gazillion options). And the more of your hair is down, the warmer you'll be.

A very classic look is one or two curly or wavy tendrils left down. This can be paired with almost any updo, provided you're decent at sectioning your hair.

Something else to keep in mind is that most fancy updos are fancy because of the hair accessories chosen, not because of the techniques. Hypnotica has a romantic French twist tutorial on YouTube that is very pretty and fancy looking... and when you look at photos where LHCers follow it without pretty hair accessories, it ends up being very subtle. That means it is really important to budget for some decorative hair stuff that suits your dress.

If you've got a pretty scant budget, I'd work with the crown braid idea. Embellishing a braid with red, silver or gold ribbons is maybe $5, and done with care it will look very expensive and elaborate.

Okay. Not sure if this will work, but here goes.Heres the dress in grey, because my dress is in for alterations. Just think dark red, or burgundy.

There are some brilliant suggestions there from everyone.
@abbatabba1137 that first picture is pretty much similar to what I was thinking, except further up my head, but the other ones are really pretty too
@selderon they're really beautiful too. I hope the pictures above work.
Decisions, decisions...

Your dress is just beautiful, simple yet elegant. :) I like Selderon's idea of a side half up-do because you will then see the length of you hair AND the back of your dress.

I applaud your taste in dresses. It's gorgeous! I love the shape and detailing. It would be a crime to hide those lovely details in the back of the dress. Please, please wear your hair so all your friends can see the back of your dress too! And practice your Lara-Croft-perfect-posture. ;)

If you can find a pin similar to the one at the hip of the dress it would be excellent as hair jewelry!

The YouTube Link took me to torrins channel, and not the video, but I think I know the one you mean.
Thanks a lot guys. It's been a real great help.
I'll try them all out when my dress gets back, and decide what I like best.

What a gorgeous dress!

The back is amazing, it would be a shame to hide it. If you still want some of your hair down, what about some variation of a side-ponytail with the length curled. You could do some twists on the sides and dot it with pretty pins to make it fancier.
