Hello,
I was wandering around my kitchen the other day wondering what different things would do to hair. I was wondering about coffee. I know it stains teeth, would it dye hair? It is also acidic, would it work like an ACV rinse? Any thoughts?

What I remember from the hennaforhair website is that it said that coffee would be a waste of time because it doesn't stain your hair and apparently can give you headaches! That's all I recall, don't have the actual quote though. You could always try it of course, but it might be awful to wash out!

Interesting. I know coffee has lots of good stuff in (I use old coffee grounds as a body scrub sometimes), but I've never thought about using it on hair. Maybe strain it and use the liquid as a rinse if you have dark hair?

Coffee can decrease the shedding due to the caffeine content, there's many women out there who use it as a rinse for the shedding.
I dont think it adds any colour though.
It can be added to henna to act as the acidic medium,I was under the illusion it would give me a brown colour with henna, but i was wrong.
From my personal experience,i used black tea rinses as an alternative (it has higher caffeine) and it did slow down my shedding. However,i underestimated its drying effects and i suffered horrible because of it.

A hairdresser years ago told me that it can enhance brown tones, but it washes out. I have never tried it.

I put coffee in my cassia treatment once. I can attest to the headache.
It got so bad I got nauseous. I had to rinse it out early because I thought I might throw up! I drink coffee everyday. It wasn't a ridiculous amount in the cassia either. I just used what was in the bottom of the pot from the morning to replace about half the water I was mixing into the powder.
I think there are just so many blood vessels on your scalp that it absorbs the caffeine readily. Also, caffeine is supposed to narrow blood vessels and slow hair growth. That is no good. I really should try to stop drinking so much. As a rinse, however, I wouldn't think it would cause these problems. Whatever color you get would be temporary.
This perdicament I got myself in was quite ammusing to my DH. He thinks I'm crazy with all the concoctions I come up with to put in my hair anyway.

I suspect the tannins from tea would build up a lot. Did you rinse with water after tea? Or shampoo occasionally? I'd think both would help reduce the buildup and drying.

no i didnt rinse with water.it was actually a horrible experience for me because it did build up and my hair tangled alot, and i was so lazy i didnt detangle for a long time which resulted in a matted hair.it took so long to detangle later and i lost so much hair
However,i did learn from my mistakes and i plan on doing them again.they really help with the shedding.

I don't drink coffee at all but I am going to try using this coffee shampoo bar I found online. I'll post when I get it and show the results.

I've tried the CV Cafe Moreno soap and I really love it. Neither me or my boyfriend drink coffee so I dont' have any actual coffee grounds to use, my hair likes the soap.

I have tried using cool black coffee as a rinse (my hair was naturally lightish brown at the time) and it did not do anything AT ALL... no shine, no 'warmth', no enhancement, etc. that may just be me and my hair but I though I should add to the information :)

Was that for me? Just in case it was, I put coffee in my hair because I drink it every morning and I read on various sources that it will bring out warmth and shine in brown hair tones. I did not have any negative effects (no headache, etc) so I am not really worried about it I just wanted to let people know that for ME it did NOTHING :) I thought where I put it in my body it wouldnt hurt to put it ON it... Oh well, now I know that it doesnt do anything and will try something else next time... :cheese:

I was wondering about this! My sorority has a project right now and we used coffee to stain some paper, and I have grounds left over. Maybe I'll try to use them as a scalp scrub?

I use coffee as a rinse every now and then - it doesn't do anything for the color, but it makes my hair feel strong and smooth.

Coffee grounds (even used) steeped in oil can be used to gloss hair, darkening and conditioning it. It may cover gray hair (YMMV) if left on for 20 minutes or so. It can be left on as long as you like, provided that your hair is healthy. It may be drying if insufficient oil is used because coffee is astringent. Good luck!

Does that mean you don't wish to become one with the glorious black liquid that is coffee? :coffee: :D
It's true, caffeine absorbs transdermally, so I wouldn't suggest soaking your head in a pot of coffee, especially before bed. But if you have no problems with the consumption of caffeine (physical or ideological), I see on reason not to try this if you wish.

My case too. It didn't even stain my hair when it was medium blonde. I heard caffeine is good for growth though (topically).

I just might use some left over coffee to my hair as a final rince. It's acidic so it may be ok. And it smells nice :) I also use coffee bean butter as a leave-in so my head should smell extra nice.

Never used coffee.
But in Germany they have Alpecin C1 Caffeine Shampoo.
Caffeine in shampoo reduces the production of testosterone, which is known for causing hair loss.
On the Alpecin webpage is a good article about caffeine in connection with hairloss.
It's in german, but maybe you can hit the translate button?
I tried to add the link here, but it says I don't have permission for that action. :-(

First off...
@Viechen I noticed your location is NS Canada.. I was raised in Liverpool. :D Its rare that I encounter anyone from NS so I had to say hi! :p
Otherwise... I will have to try this coffee thing... Ive been drinking it all my life so I dont see the harm in putting it on my scalp. And I certainly wont complain of the smell. ;)

*waves* :) Actually I was just going to mention that I am from Germany and that I remember that shampoo that was mentioned above. We moved to NS a few years ago... I am glad that there are some people on here that kow NS though :p So far all the Canadians I saw were from the 'big cities'... *stop hijacking thread now*
I tried the coffe rinse again a few days ago and am sad to say that, once again, it did absolutely nothing for me... Maybe its just my hairtype?

I've used coffee in a henna mix (Rainbox henna) and it didn't do a darn thing. I imagine at best it might give you a little added richness to the color, but I didn't even see that.

I've tried coffee twice. Once in my henna and once I used coffee grounds as a scalp scrub.
Results both times: wicked bad headache which, ironically, was helped greatly by Excedrine washed down with coffee. I didn't notice any benefit condition or color-wise for my hair.
