View Full Version : Manic Panic's Vampire Red on Henna/Cassia Hair - PICS!

So I heard that Manic Panic can sometimes look cool when put on top of henna and sometimes doesn't show at all. Well, I decided to see for myself how my own hair would react. My hair was originally just dyed with a 50/50 cassia/henna mixture and then I would only dye the roots every couple of months or so. I should also probably add that I am a natural blonde.

So, I put a whole container of Manic Panic's Vampire Red on my hair to see how it would turn out (classic cream formula). Results were VERY VIVID. I don't think it could have been more vivid on bleached hair!

So here's before with my normal henna head:

Then BAM! with Manic Panic's Vampire Red:

Dramatic difference, no? It's been a REAL PAIN to wash out though. For someone who uses shampoo without lauryl sulfates, rinses in cold, and only washes hair every couple of days.... It's especially hard. I guess my hair just naturally LOVES to soak up dye. *sigh*

It's really cool but annoying. I want it to washout without being harsh on it. The only method that seems promising is using hot EVOO on my head. But any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to use detergent on my head to get it out but many say sometimes you have to if your hair loves dye like mine.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience!

Yotaka - it's amazing! I love it - and it suits you, although I can appreciate it's awkward if you now want to remove it.

wow I am going to have to try this. This is the red I have been after forever. Dying it with chemical dyes and it faded horribly within 2 washes! So I switched to henna and while I love the color and that it doesn't fade I would still like it redder and not so much orange :)

Don't get me wrong! I absolutely love it. I'm just ready to have my henna color back because my roots are growing in quickly and my natural hair color blends better with the henna... Plus I just plain miss my henna already. It's already been a little over two weeks and the Manic color is still close to that of the picture which was taken the day of the coloring.

Well, if your goal is for it to last as long as possible I suggest a few things:
1) Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo before you dye because it opens up your hair follicles
2) When done applying the dye, leave it in at least two hours before washing it out to make sure your hair soaks as much as possible.
3) Rinse the dye out with cold water because hot water loosens the dye from your hair.
4) Finish with an ACV rinse to help set the dye in its place.
5) Ongoingly wash hair with gentle lauryl sulfate free shampoos, cold water, and only wash sparingly to reduce fading.

These are the reasons why mine stuck so well. XD

Wow, that is so cool! I love the color, but hope you figure out how to wash it out gently since you're ready to be rid of it.

Funny! I was actually looking at where to get Manic Panic dyes last night because I wanted to try it after seeing results on here!

It looks absolutely fabulous! That is really a knockout colour, wow! You wont mind if I copy, will you? :o

edt: I didn't see the part about getting rid of it at first, but I do think any hot oil treatment should help fade it.. sorry not much help, eek

I didn't think I'd have any trouble getting it out. The number one complaint I always hear about Manic Panic is that it washes out way too soon (many people say within a few days!). Guess all the goodies I learned on LHC about how to take care of my hair have inadvertently kept my dye from wanting to leave!

Not at all! :D

I advise that you just enjoy it. It will gradually fade away. I did a similar product on my hair last spring in red-violet, and there was still a trace of color in my hair 12 weeks later. But it did gradually disappear completely with my normal hair-care habits. Now I miss it and will probably do it again next spring. I still have half the jar.

Gorgeous result. I often use dyes like manic panic over henna as I love the colours it produces.

If you want it to fade quicker my only advise is shampooing with SLS shampoos and lots of oil treatments. It's a good excuse to try lots of deep conditioning treatments.

I've found dyes like manic panic seem to stick around longer on henna'd hair than normal hair. Which is great if you're happy with the colour, not so great if you want to shift it quick. But it will fade completely in time so don't worry. :)

Good advice to know, thank you! I think I will enjoy it, it was just "panicking" me a lil wee bit because I didn't expect its tenacious longevity. Think I will do a few hot oil treatments to speed it along and eventually want to try one of the violet colors on my tips since I'll be getting a pharmacy tech job in a few months I can't do the whole head an unnatural color. Wooooo.

Try Chi's "No Lift Environmental Hair Color" in RR. It might last longer! ;) I can only find it in professional salon shops. It's like $10, and you mix it with 10 vol developer in 1:1 ratio. Nice, deep burgundy red. :D

I just used a plain cassia treatment over my manic panic, it always seems to lighten it allot when the roots get annoying. A really long snowy moon treatment seems to as well. I assume both of those are lightening the color by displacement of the dye molecules. I wouldn't do your regular henna mix on top of it though as some people say it locks in whatever temporary color they had underneath it.

I am so appreciative of you telling me that. I'm going to henna on Friday and I was trying to figure out if I should do a full application (thinking it might help get the temp dye out) or just roots. Now I know I'll just do roots.

Also sounds like this is the perfect time for me to try out SMT for the first time!

Some deep-conditioners not formulated for dyed hair seem to strip the colour away very easily-which is why most box-dyers usually steer clear away from them .I'm guessing it's the alcohols in said conditioners-you can give it a shot.

Life is so unfair! For years and years, that was the colour I was trying to acheive; I spent so much money and time at salons and rarely got it as intense as I wanted, and the few times I did, it would fade out in a week or less. And now I see there's a way it can be possible, but I like my hair brown!

In any case, I think this looks gorgeous on you but I hope you can get it out since that's what you want.

Yotaka and Bellebot you both have gorgeous colors! Wow! Lovely.

I however, have to say I dislike Manic Panic. It does tend to stick around, but not the vibrant first two weeks color but rather my vampire red started out lovely and then faded into a darker purpleish color that I couldn't wash out for such a long time! I do love the colors, and it did not hurt my hairs, but the vibrancy is short-lived, but the faded color is long-lived. Or at least so it seemed for me. I love henna +cassia+honey. My new favorites, they don't disappoint.

That's a beautiful color. So gorgeous I'm considering using maniac panic now haha.
Concerning your dilemma... Have you considered using baking soda or herbs to wash it out? They might work, especially baking soda, since it is strong enough to clarify hair, just remember to follow up with an ACV rinse. Good luck. :)

If you're a natural blonde, I've learned from friends & personal experience that any dye (even temporary) with red in it will stay in blonde hair much much longer than other hair colors. Some temporary dyes even warn not to put it on blonde hair because it can cause permanent staining. I did notice that anytime I used Manic Panic, a clarifying shampoo would cause some of the dye to wash out more than any other kind (I could actually see it rinsing out).

It looks fantastic.

I have to add, when I used MP's Vampire Red, just in streaks, it simply wouldn't come out. As you say, it fades, but doesn't really go. I had to use Colour B4 to get rid of it.

And I've used Lie-locks (purple) over bleached hair and it disappeared in a fortnight. So I don't know what is so long-lasting about the Vampire Red.

Ahhh I am seriously wanting to go more burgundy and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do either MP or Special Fx on my henna hair - it's very dark already so it won't be this drammatic, though.

That looks amazing, I must say!

To those that did manic panic streaks...details how you did it?? So that it doesn't bleed on your other hair?
My hair has henna and indigo so...it's on the very dark side of red and I would love some bright streaks in my bangs....I actually would love it to stick
Do you do it on wet hair??

I just dipped my thumb and forefinger into the pot, applied it to small sections and wrapped the sections in cling film. I'm sure there are better ways...

Will the manic panic do anything to dark hair???without bleaching? Visible results?
I am hoping for a few deep streaks of red throughout my bangs

When doing Manic Panic or Pravana streaks in my hair, I get foil, put the separated strands on the foil. I then use a hair color brush placing the color first in the middle of the strands so I can fold over the dry bottoms to have them stick to the dye in the center as they are too long for the foil, then I work the color through all the strands leaving a very small gap before the roots so it doesnt bleed over. Fold foil around strands and its good to go! =)

Depending on the color of the streaks it will leave a "hue" of color on the rest of your hair that isnt lightened. When I had dark auburn hair and added violet, my hair turned deep purplish red with a stronger purple hue in the sun. HTH!
