View Full Version : Silk Paint ink as a color enhancer?

I am thinking of adding a couple of drops of silk paint to my rinse to enhance the color of my hair, I plan on taking before and after photos and documenting the whole thing to see if it works (and if it does I'll post the results here, duh :p).

I just figured I'd see if anyone else has tried this? If so, what were the results? And could silk paint be damaging, in little amounts?
Also trying to figure out if I should stick with browns or do something crayyzeeeee like red or purple. I can't due blues 'cause my hair has red undertones and everytime I've tried blue it's gone green.

I once got some silk paint on my maltese poodle (who is white) and the color lasted all the way until she got a haircut.

But yeah. Generally anything you can contribute to my adventure will be appreciated. TYIA :)

I'm not aware of any fabric paints that are an actual dye. Dyes form a chemical bond with your hair. Paints would form a surface coating, which may or may not turn out badly for your hair.

Both paints and dyes tend to be quite toxic. Hair dye sold for use on humans is carefully tested, so while it isn't what I'd call safe, you generally won't poison yourself by accident. I'm not aware of any paints that are tested for use on humans, so I'd be very concerned about accidental poisoning. Most paints do not list all the ingredients they contain. Dyes intended for fabric definitely don't list all the ingredients they contain.

The reason I sound so paranoid here is because a lot of the bright colors in dyes and paint pigments are derived from chromium compounds. Chromium is really seriously nasty stuff as a poison to humans, and it would be hard for a doctor to figure out what's wrong. And like all heavy metals, a really tiny dose can be enough to cause poisoning symptoms... which means it would be hard for a test to catch it.

I would use a dye that is tested for use on humans.

I would not do this. It will be a stain on the top of your hair and likely make a terrible mess when rinsing. Also the toxicity is a factor I would be very wary of. There are semi-permanent colors that will not cause damage to your hair out there if you want a bit of a color boost, check out the Elumen thread.

Wow, thank you both for your replies. I didn't think it would be harmful, nevermind to the extent of poisoning!
I'm glad I posted before I tried this out (I wasn't going to), could have ended in disaster :o
Thank you very much, I won't be doing this.
