View Full Version : 100g of henna enough for fine, thin hair, just past BSL?

So i bought a container of henna/indigo from the health food shop. They didn't have much to choose from. They only had one container each for red hair & dark brown hair. Doing a bit of research here before i use it, i read somewhere that i'd need 200-250 grams. But my hair is very, very fine & thin. When i stretch down the longest hairs (my hair is quite curly) i'm about 3cm from waist.
Should i go back to the shop & see if they've got some more in or should i have a go & see if 100 grams does the job?

I'd say yes. 150 gr is enough for me; with some leftovers.

Certain henna-selling web sites provide really misleading guidelines when it comes to how much henna one needs.

That should be enough, my hair is straight, fine, and thin and I only used about 100g to do a full head application when I was nearly at waist. You can always mix it up a bit thinner to help it spread more easily.

I use 100-150gm and my hair is around hip length. Did you get the Rainbow brand henna? It wouldn't hurt to mix in some conditioner, it'll help spread the henna more and make it easier to rinse out

My hair is medium thickness and waist (pulled straight) and I can get two applications from 100g. I mix in conditioner to help spread it out and it makes it easier to apply.

Mine is waist and I've used 100g each of the three times I've hennaed.

If this is your first time henna you could use 150-250 grams. If there's any left over you can just freeze it and use it later. A first full head henna takes more of the stuff than any other times.

If you do a fairly thin paste and don't mind dripping you can do a full head henna with 100g if you have thinner hair. It's just messy and a little bit more difficult.

I have a mid-back medium thick hair and if I do a full head henna it takes 150-200 g of BAQ henna, but I usually do milder application = 1" of roots with full henna and gloss to lenghts.

Thankyou everyone for all the replies. I really appreciate the advice. I will have a go with the 100 grams i have. I did a strand test yesterday & will hopefully get a chance in the next few days to do the lot.
I have used henna 2 or 3 times before, but many years ago.

Lastnite - i'm using an Aussie brand called BonVit.

Thanks for the suggestion of adding conditioner. I can imagine that will help a lot with application.

You can definitely make do with that much, if you mix it really thin. More of a gloss almost, if you add conditioner or something else to thicken it. This will be fine if you just want a little color and/or conditioning.

If you want to go for deepest color, though, and especially if you have gray hair and don't want it to come out orange, I'd use more henna; 150-200 gm depending on exactly how thin your hair is. People with quite thick hair who are covering lots of gray and don't want orange would probably need to be more generous with their amount of powder.

It will be enough. I find people use way too much henna. You should coat all strands but there is no point in globbing it on, thats a waste of henna.

Thanks for this. I do have a few greys i'm wanting to cover. I will try to cover these first with a thicker mix.:)

You know, I am have medium thick hair, 3 cm from waist too and somehow I can do mu cassia treatment with 70-80 g of powder. So I think 100 g should work for you:)

You should be fine with that - I used 100g on my classic length fairytailed fine hair.
Just don't make it too thick, you need to be able to mush it about :p thick yogurt texture is ideal. Best of luck!

It took me two and a half dye jobs to get through 100 grams of henna( almost-waist, fine, medium thickness hair, slightly layered).I apply it like this:
1)clip front half of hair up
2)bend over the bathtub, get a handful of henna, massage it into the half of hair that's hanging down
3)release clipped hair, massage henna into that as well
4)get a wide-toothed comb, comb your hair(still hanging over the bathtub). You'll notice chunks of henna falling out.
5)gather said chunks, collect any bits of henna left from the jar, and apply it to your roots, to further avoid any rootage.
this gets my hair decently coated, but nowhere near the mud-head the henna applying videos depict.

My hair is on the thin side of average and I can do a full head application with about 70 grams. Of course it never hurts to err on the side of caution and aim to have too much, but I know that indigo is useless after it sits for awhile, unlike henna which can pack a punch after being frozen and thawed.

If you're worried about coverage, just make the paste a little thin or stretch it with conditioner - in my experience it's never seemed to make the dye take any less than applying it straight.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I bought this henna several weeks ago & have been too scared to use it, lol. Now with all this good advice i'm ready to give it a go - can't wait. Just need a few hours of alone time. I don't want to do it while the OH is around & he's not working at the moment.

Good luck with the henna application! Let us know how it turns out!

The last 6 months I only hennaed my roots and did a hennagloss with the rest. I used about 100 grams in total for this.
My hair is thin and about hip lenght.

The last time I did a full head application I used 250 grams and froze the leftovers, which was enought to do a root treatment.

I hennaed my hair today and 100 grams was more than enough. I'm relieved to hear these responses!
