:) Just bought some dried Hibiscus flowers from the store and about to crush them with my molcajete to make a powder for a hair mask. I'm excited :cheese: I love hibiscus and honey. I also like to mix it with other Ayurvedic herbs. I want to try something different to moisturize my hair. Anyone else got some great hair mask ideas....anything different I could do with my hibiscus flowers?

I have used ground up dried hibiscus flowers (red) to wash my hair.

However it is very messy - red everywhere!!!

Having honey in might help it not spatter everywhere - or you could add fenugreek to make it more gel like...

I ended up not doing it for a while because the clean up sucks!!!

But my hair liked it. I just ground mine up very fine in the coffee grinder and mixed it with water because my hair doesn't like honey or fenugreek... it builds up too fast in my hair...

Hibiscus is acidic and made my hair very shiny and clean!!!

Oh and since today was my hair wash day - I tried it again! This time however I just took a tablespoon of the powdered dried flowers (i ground them in my coffee grinder) and put it in a liter bottle and added some hot water and let it sit for a minute or two and then added warm water (about 3/4 liter) and shook it good. It made some foam and then I wet my hair and poured it through.

It worked great as a wash this way!!! WAY less mess than when I've tried to make a paste... and my hair came out wonderful!!!

Does anyone recommend hibiscus rinses?
And will filtered hibiscus tea bags work?

Celestial Seasonings "Zinger" teas list hibiscus as their first ingredient.

Does anyone recommend hibiscus rinses?
I recommend them. I use Hibiscus rinses as the conditioning rinse after my shikakai and amla wash.

And will filtered hibiscus tea bags work?
Yes they will. I've used Tazo passion tea with great results.

I recently bought some Hibiscus leaves too and want to use them in rinses :) Is there any rule of thumb on how often this can be done? :) I wash my hair every other day- every 4 days :)

I have the same question, as I do have hibiscus bushes in my garden and want to use the leaves. Do they dye blonde hair?

I've bought hibiscus powder from Mountain Rose Herbs. I tried it on my hair for conditioning, but didn't notice much of a difference. I used to eat it for the high vitamin C content. Tart but yummy.

you can also just use hibiscus that is already powdered. It's great for boosting red tones, and reduces premature greying.

Mine, I soak in HOT water for a few hours, blend into coconut oil, slather on, zap with my dryer, then leave til annoyed. Mine is purple blue toned, and it tames the hot tones for 2 maybe 3 washes.

Mix hibiscus with lavender and rose bud to make an infusion, let it sit, use it as a final rinse it will bring out gorgeous red-mauve tones in your hair if you don't rinse it out as well as the hibiscus plus oils in the lavender and rose condition the hair.

I use hibiscus in my herbal washing for conditioning. The last few times I used 1 tbsp reetha, 3 tbsp hibiscus and 1 tbsp fenugreek. I put all of it in boiled water and let it steep for 30 min then strain. I think hibiscus really offsets the drying from reetha and shikakai.:) And my hair comes out shiny.

Tapioca your hairs seem a lovely blondish-gold color. How much hibiscus do you use in your henna treatments? Do you have a specific mix? Do you find hibiscus to release a lot of red into your mix?

I am thinking about putting hibiscus in a cassia/honey treatment. I have light brown/gold hair. I'm afraid of the strong/ultra vibrant colors henna releases so I was thinking about trying hibiscus for a subtle coppery color. Do you have any advice regarding this?

Reviving this thread after reading up on hibiscus last night - I'm going to try and get some at the health food store today and use it as a leave in rinse. I'm looking to bring out some of the red highlights that are usually only visible in the sun.

The best I figure is that the hibiscus will stain the darker hairs more red, and hmm, who knows about the lighter hairs?

I'll let you know how the experiment goes!

I have been thinking of adding powered hibiscus to my henna to get redder tones. Anyone have success with this? I also thought about just mixing the henna with some hibiscus tea (Republic of Tea brand) that I don't care to drink. Thoughts?

Hmm, I crushed up 1TBSP of the flowers and steeped it for over an hour, starting with boiling water. The tea didn't get as deep red as I expected. I'm not expecting much of a stain, but we'll see once it all dries.

No ill drying effects from the acidity. I guess my hair likes acid. ()

I use hibiscus, along with other herbs, in a conditioning rinse, but I haven't tried it in a hair mask. Hibiscus stains, so for me it's easier to use the rinse in the shower.

Glad I just re-located this thread. I've been using Red Zinger Tea in my Henna mix to boost the red tones and conditioning. Can't say for sure that it does anything extra but I love the color I get from Henna and my hair has never been in better condition :p. Certainly can't hurt! I'm thinking I'll start adding hibiscus to my regular rinse which is a mix of green tea and catnip tea steeped twice plus 1 oz. ACV to fill a 24 oz water bottle. I use half of this each time I wash. Leaves my hair clean and shiny :D.

You can always buy hibiscus at Mexican stores if you have one near you, they sell it dried and in Spanish it's called "jamaica." My mother is Mexican and so we like to make the drink with it. It's so delicious, and I didn't know I could use it as a hair rinse!

It came in an Amazon box :). It was $15.88 including shipping. I couldn't find it this inexpensive on Amazon unless I was ordering something else totalling $25.00 for their free shipping.

How do you make hibiscus hair mask?

I was wondering that too, I could't see an example anywhere on how much water and many flowers you should use.
I'm sorry for the trouble if i missed it!

Ha have an indoor hibiscusplant, does it matter what colour it is, mine is pink?!

Mountain Rose Herbs sells organic whole hibiscus flowers for $7.50 a pound, fyi. Not including shipping. They also give good discounts for bulk orders (you can mix and match, but it has to be in 1 pound increments).

I'm putting an order together 'cause we are out of a bunch of things, including hibiscus. I love it as a tea, and it's very high in vitamin C. I'm excited to try it in my hair too!
