this is my current recipe, which does not involve manic panic at all.

100g grapefruit juice
1 oz vatika hair oil

I put Manic Panic on after I henna or after the henna is on my head. MP doesn't need to sit; it's veggie dye.
You can get it at Sally Beauty or online!
Good luck!

I use Directions (very similar to Manic panic) and henna. Though I don't mix them together. To get the best result it's best doing a 2 step process. Henna first, then manic panic. If you mix them together all at once it can affect the dye release of the henna and you won't get the best results.
What I usually do is alternate between dyes, henna one month, directions the next as I like having gradually changing hair colour from more coppery shades to more vivid red shades then back to more auburn/coppery and so on.

but what if i mix them after dye release? i'm worried that if i do it in a 2 step process, it will look like 100% manic panic and no henna.

That should be fine. if you're worried about too much manic panic color, start with a smallish amount. you can always add more next henna!

well, after causing my bathroom to look like a murder scene, the manic panic didn't take at all. but i did notice that the henna was loads easier to rinse out and that my hair didn't turn into straw.

I used manic panic a couple of weeks after henna'ing and it REALLY showed up. Turned out a very bright red. The next time I mixed Special Effects into my henna mixture and I think it toned down the "orange-ish" tones (which is what I was going for) but the color was not as obvious.
I have heard that using manic panic (or any temporary dye) in the few days following henna doesn't take as well because henna coats the hair strands.. might be something to think about.
I think I am going to try henna hut next time I want a really red result or use the manic panic separately again. Hope that helps!

Just a personal note. I've used manic panic, and while it does produce an awesome vampire red the first two-three weeks it fades very fast, and then the yucky faded color seemed to take forever to wash out. I would suggest ramping up your henna mix with paprika and tumeric. Also if it has gotten to dark check out the thread on lightening your henna using a herbal and honey mix. The honey thread is always helpful too.
