View Full Version : Did I just do something nasty?

I've been haveing a case of the blahs. My hair, skin, everything is just blah lately do to winter weather and fighting a cold. So, I figured I'd have a spa day for me and do something interesting with my hair. And the kids(who think I'm weird anyways) and Hubby(who KNOWS I'm weird) are all out of the house.

Ok, sooooooo I had 3 bananas that were destined for the garbage (banana bread does not go over well here). So I threw them in the waring blender. For those of you who don't know, it's a glass jar with a spinning blade at the bottom. Set it on high and ran it for about 5 minutes! Then I added some honey, and a bit of conditioner. It was really smooth!

After I washed my hair in pretty warm water, I applied this mess to my hair and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. Now, I'm roaming around the forum with a shower cap and towel on my head.

I can across a few posts on bananas being bad for hair!!!:( Do you think this potion is going to do nasty things to my hair?

I'm this far into it. So I'll hang untill I can't stand the towel any longer. I'll report back after a rinse and air dry.

The only complaint I've heard about bananas is that it can be hard to get the chunks out of your hair, and banana baby food is recommended for its lack of chunks. So you should be fine unless, like me, you are allergic to bananas.

Spidermom, I'm not allergic to bananas. I'd be in some sorry shape if I were. I love them! There were no chunks. I made sure of that to start with.

I just got out of the shower, everything rinsed out just great! I didn't even need shampoo or conditioner. I VERY gently combed through all of my hair with a wide tooth comb. I was even more gentle than usual. Now, I'm airdrying this beast with my "batman cape!?!". That's what my DD3yo calls it when I drape the towel over my shoulder and wait for it to dry. I think she watches too many shows with the brothers!!

Nah! Bananas are fantastic for the hair! I do a caramel treatment (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=454&highlight=Caramel+treatment) every few months. Next time, freeze the bananas, thaw and pulverise-- there is absolutely no lumps with this method! Also, baby food bananas are wonderful for this.

Oh, welcome to the banana lovers club. :disco:

I did a banana treatment yesterday! LOL! 1 banana, mashed with a bit of honey, a teaspoon of olive oil and about the same of shea butter.I used conditioner to get it out with a detangling comb. My hair loved it :D I think it's an emollient or something...?

I had a few tiny bits in my hair, but nothing I couldn't live with ;)

Bananas are great for hair. The problem is if they're not blended enough they don't rinse out easily. You look like you have chunks of snot in your hair--guess how I know this. :D

If the bananas are blended smoothly, or if you used baby food bananas, you won't have a problem with snotty hair. Ha.

Good luck in rinsing it out. It may take you a wash or two to get it all out. Yeah, when I did it, it was totally nasty. Dried banana bits stink :puke: I haven't been able to eat anything banana since I tried a homemade banana conditioner. I hope you have better luck than I did.

She had no trouble.
I never did either.

I had some leftovers I threw in the freezer for safe keeping. I think I'll try this once a month, just for a pick me up! I love it!

I better go label them before someone things frozen banana smoothy looks good. I don't think the hubby would like it if he had a spoon of conditioner!

I never found banana hard to wash out after I started freezing it or used baby food banana. Yes, banana that isn't mashed is a nightmare to get out with water alone, but Conditioner is wonderful for removing the particles from hair.

As a matter of fact, I have some banana freezing right now.

I had no idea it helped freezing the bananas first, I'll have to try that. I've done the caramel treatment once and although I loved the result I did have problems with a few banana lumps left in my hair after it.

My local grocery has a shopping cart of DEEPLY discounted bananas set next to the banana rack. These in the cart are the extremely ripe, brown spotted, maybe bruised ones. They usually run 4-5 pounds for a dollar or some such.

Maybe you could ask your produce department if they have something like this? They mash up smoother too. I had one that the only thing holding it together was the peel! LOL

I don't think it's just the bananas.... I had the lumpy problem with mashed up avocado! it just stuck to my hair after 6 washes and it smelled horrible...

I moved on to just oils... But I really think my hair just absorbs everything and that's why it's hard to wash everything out, even henna is hard to get out for my hair...

I'm glad your hair feels awesome! I'm going to try the baby food one before I try the blended bananas.... My home is a total anti banana place... I don't like to eat them and neither does DH so unless the kids want them, we don't keep them around...

I'll stick to oils, and cremes, I keep the food for eating. I don't care for using the sticky stuff, like honey and stuff. Glad it worked out for you.

I've been considering trying this- it sounds good, and my hair tends to like that kind of thing. I'll make sure to freeze the bananas first. The only problem is, I hate- cannot stand! the smell of banana. Does anyone know of anything I could add to it that might mask the smell?

How about a few drops of your favorite essential oil?

I have two VERY ripe bananas on the kitchen counter. Now I'm inspired to try this for myself :). I'm thinking of trying it with aloe rather than honey though since I think I just used up the last of my honey. :( It will be like a banana SMT :).

I just couldn't stand to waste my brown bananas so I threw them in a blender with conditioner, aloe juice and a small amount of castor oil and put it in my hair. Now I'm working on my finals with a head that smells like a pina colada ;).

Just try to not eat it, k? ;)

I make lots of variations on the SMT using either banana, pumpkin, avocado or a mix of all...it's fun. :)

about a week ago I Did a banana and EVO treatment... my mom was ayt the table and since she knows i hate eating bananas she looked at me weird when i started smashing a banana , she said dont tell me you gonna put that in your hair , i said yes so any way they now think i have lost my mind..:D so any way i leave it in for maybe an hour.. then wash it like i always do ... but i could get the clumps of banana to come out... I got out and while my hair dried i combed most of the clumps out ... it dried and felt so nice and soft so yea just make sure you blend the banana smooth not just mash it lol:D

Freezing helps b/c it destroys the cell structure of the banana. A frozen, then thawed, banana will turn to mush all on its own; the blender just helps it along.

Am bookmarking this thread; I need to do something fun to pamper myself, and now I'm thinking of doing a Banana SMT or a caramel treatment this weekend. :)

I did this once but didn't blend... Took me like 3 hours to get the banana out! But had great hair! Maybe i'll try the freeze-thaw-blend-put on head method...

I tried a banana in my hair once, don't remember what I mixed it with, but do remember I rinsed with strait apple cider vinegar. Worst thing ever. The smell of my hair afterwards reminded me of vomit, and the remaining banana chunks didn't help that at all.:puke:
