View Full Version : Straightening?

The frizzy nightmare has continued, and the ceramic-based hair straightener only brought forth split ends and temporary relief.

I was advised to look into this one (http://www.conair.com/infiniti-nano-silver-conair-high-temperature-ionic-steam-straightener-p-621.html), does anyone have any experience with it or alternative methods that are known to be effective (please, only things that have worked before)?

You probably won't want to hear this, but there is no such thing as a safe hair straightener if you're planning on growing long hair. You can straighten occasionally, if you do it quickly and using heat protection, and if your hair isn't too delicate, but regular straightening may mean your hair won't go much beyond BSL (without showing lots of damage, that is).

I would suggest looking into other ways of taming frizz, such as switching to a no-shampoo routine, using aloe vera gel or oils, switching combing/brushing techniques, and putting your hair up. There are lots of threads on this that you can look at - search for "frizz" in the thread title or thread tags.

Ditto on what Nat said. You won't find many flat-iron lovers here.

How about wet-setting your hair in large rollers (like orange-juice can sized). I get the smoothest, silkiest, shiniest, frizzless hair when I wet-set mine. It NEVER looked this good when I blowfried or flat ironed.

Search the forum for "wet set" for photos I did of one. Just sub the small rollers I use for very large ones and your hair will be stick straight.

I tried searching for 'wet set' but it wouldn't let me because each word is only 3 letters long. I found it by searching for 'rollers' instead. Here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=1499) is the link in case anybody else wants to read it.

I don't know of any straightening method that won't cause damage. Doing chemical straightening weakens the chemical bonds and structure of the hair and doing heat straightening will dry and burn the hair. If it is hot enough or chemically strong enough to work it will be hot enough of chemically strong enough to damage.

Some people get straighter hair by letting it air-dry completely on large rollers -what is called a "roller set." But I imagine that it would be impractical for every day.

It would help if you let us know your hair type, your current hair length and your length goals. There is a place to fill in that information in your user profile, so it will show with all your posts. Without this information, we're essentially working blind, in terms of figuring out what might work for you.
