View Full Version : Hair slide help?
zelah May 8th, 2008, 09:08 PM I haven't found info on wearing hair slides properly, so here is my query: are there any special tips/secrets/etc. that I need to know? I just got a couple Quecraft slides in the mail today, and am having problems with them fitting and staying in. The only way I could get one to actually fit was to do a half-up bun, but the slide fell over awkwardly. Maybe I just don't have the right hair for this, but if anyone has a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated!
angelthadiva May 8th, 2008, 09:23 PM Up until recently I couldn't wear one either...The *only* way I can wear one is by first anchoring my hair w/an elastic, then put the slide over it. HTH
Cinnamon Hair May 8th, 2008, 10:01 PM If your slide is the perfect size for your hair, it will securely hold a log roll or a folded braid. If not, secure your log roll or braid with Good Days Pins or whatever you normally use, and put the hair slide in as decoration. If you have thin or short hair you could put the slide over the top of a bun. Bone slides (I'm assuming that's what you have, since it is from Que Craft) are almost impossible to hold an updo alone since they aren't flexible.
Finoriel May 10th, 2008, 02:13 AM For me it depends on many different factors how / if I can use a slide.
The weight of the slides, if they are heavier ones it is not as easy to use them as for light weight ones. The heavier they are the more they get "decoration only" and the updo itself is held by hairpins. You could try to use them as a base for an English braid or folded dutch braid to get a feeling for them. Thatīs what I did when I began to use slides and had very little idea how to insert them into a bun. With light ones I can do almost every style now, even a low ponytail at the nape or halfups (when I still did them) when they have the right size for the hair volume at this point.
The ones with a very smooth surface on the back, like polished wood, horn or bone, tend to slide down more than for example leather ones.
Not flexible slides are more difficult to use than flexible ones, as they do not adjust to the bun > the bun has to adjust to them and more compact bun styles often wonīt hold with them. So they need to have the exactly right size for a certain style or it has to be a loose bun to make it possible to condense the hair right under the slide a bit.
I use different sized and shaped slides for almost every bun. The one I use for an infinity bun is another one than I use for a folded braid or a log roll.
All in all it means that you need to try and practice with the slides you own for which styles they work for you. Donīt give up, owning Que Crafts is worth practicing, they really have beautiful slides.
cutastrophe May 10th, 2008, 08:46 AM yeah, because they come in such a variety of shapes, the quecraft slides definately require some practice and experimentation. it took me a long time to get the dragon one to work for me. my favorite slide of her's though is in my toys album, it's the perfect fit because it's oval and curves inward. it's the most comfortable toy I own.
my favorite way to wear slides is folded up french braids. to get a secure hold you have to be sure to catch enough of the hair at the scalp with the stick.
frizzinator May 10th, 2008, 10:59 AM Sometimes they will not go around an updo attractively, but they can be inserted like sticks ...meaning that they are not holding the girth of the updo from scalp to surface, but just the amount of hair that sits on top of the stick portion of the slide.
I have a gorgeous Bronze Jewelers slide that flattens whatever is under it, so I don't like the look of it squishing the bun even though it fits and holds perfectly. Therefore, I now use it to hold a ponytail.

I love doing that too, but it seems all my slides want to slip lately. Not sure why. I've had to use elastics in my hair, then thread the slide through them. Makes me sad to use elastics. :(
