View Full Version : Searching for a French Braid Tool
Tapioca May 7th, 2008, 11:15 AM Once upon a time in the 80's... (sounds like a movie title.)
I had a plastic gizmo (made by Goody?) that helped with french braiding. It was teal plastic, and looked like a letter "W" with four tines. It would hold the hair while braiding, and was intended for people (like me) that need to be a trained octopus to french braid.
The gizmo disappeared a few years ago, and I didn't mind, since I'm not too fond of french braids on me. However, the DD's hair is getting long enough, and I want one again. They're not on the Goody website, so I assume they no longer make them. Anybody seen one lately? Have one you want to swap or sell?
eadwine May 7th, 2008, 11:23 AM How about watching this video first: link (http://www.ehow.com/video_17115_french-braid-hair.html)
It is a VERY clear one of how to do this on yourself AND on someone else. It's how I taught my clutz fingers to do what I wanted :)
(ignore the fryer at the start)
Miss Murphy May 7th, 2008, 11:23 AM Tapioca, I have one of those! It's red plastic, and just as you described. I think I might even have the instructions somewhere - let me go and have look :)
MadHatter May 7th, 2008, 11:30 AM There's this (http://www.seenontvproducts.net/braidinisportsbraider/index.html) thingamabob
Miss Murphy May 7th, 2008, 11:39 AM Here, is this what you mean?

LeaM07 May 7th, 2008, 12:01 PM I've seen those too, and I've found references to a Scunci "easy braider", but I'm not sure if that's it or not. I had a Braidini/Sports Braider thing (which I threw out long ago), but it wasn't any easier than a regular French Braid.
This (http://www.scunci.com/product_detail.aspx?gid=11&pid=33&lp=5) looks interesting.

I have one of those. It does sort of work for Herringbone braids but I actually find them easier to do without the gadget. There's a 2nd style which is a bit like a rope braid which I managed to do once on myself and it looked nice but it's a bit tricky to get it to look right on the back of your own head. I need to practice with it a bit more.
Tapioca May 7th, 2008, 03:17 PM Miss Murphy - That's it! Mine was a different color, but that's it exactly. Do you know what it's called? I'm sure I can find it on Ebay. (You can find *anything* on Ebay.)
soleluna May 7th, 2008, 05:24 PM I have one, from scunci -a bit different, same purpouse I guess- up in swaps!
ETA: This (http://www.scunci.com/product_detail.aspx?gid=11&pid=33&lp=5) looks interesting. yep, this is the one I'm swapping
kwaniesiam May 7th, 2008, 10:30 PM I've never used them, but I have found that the best solution is lots of practice :flower:
I managed to master the french braid about 2 weeks after my first messy attempt. Maybe just working on it would help if you can't find one of those?

Tapioca, I have absolutely no clue what it's called. I just saved the one page, with the instructions.
I am however, willing to send it your way, if you like :)

Please please please? I'm willing to swap with something. Anything you love that can only be found in the US?
Miss Murphy May 8th, 2008, 01:44 PM Tapioca, I'd love to send it your way. I got a bunjii from CdJ in a swap, so I'd love to pay that forward.
I might be able to think of something really weird that's only available in the States, but in the meantime, just PM me your name and address. I'm off to the post office tomorrow anyway :)
(and the price sticker is still on, it was just 3EUR).

I found my instructions and yes indeed it is called the Easy Braid by Scunci. Don't see it on their website so it may not be made anymore. They still might have them at pink and sparkly stores like Claire's, I think that is where mine came from maybe two years ago.
Miss Murphy, you are cool!
