View Full Version : Horn comb
missy60 May 7th, 2008, 09:48 AM I have done a search but really havent found an answer. I have heard so much about the benefits of these combs, and I was considering buying one. I have curly/wavy hair and comb mostly with conditioner in the shower. I occasionally comb when dry but its not an every day thing. I know the wood combs are not good to use on wet hair but what about the horn combs? Do you all think it would be worth it to invest in one?
n3m3sis42 May 7th, 2008, 12:12 PM I use my horn comb on both wet and dry hair. However, I am only mildly wavy so I can't speak to whether combing dry hair is good for curlier girls like you. :)
If you are interested, this (http://heavenlyharvestinc.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2_30/products_id/119?osCsid=5e83835b44c9036f23e97943deaba067) is where I got my horn comb. I totally think it was worth every penny, and will probably buy another soon so I can have one to keep in my purse in addition to the one I use at home.
Flaxen May 7th, 2008, 06:02 PM If you're going to use it on wet hair, watch for warping and splitting. Also, be forewarned that wet horn can stink as much as wet boar bristles.
walkinglady May 7th, 2008, 06:11 PM I love my horn comb. I do not comb my hair when I condition so I can't help you there. I do use mine in damp hair with no problem. I also wash the comb in soap and water. I've owned it for around three years and it is as good as new. Mine is a very thick comb and I bought it at the same place as n3m3sis42. I personally think it was worth every penny!
manderly May 7th, 2008, 06:38 PM My comb isnt used in the shower or anything, but I do use it on my wet hair all the time, I just make sure to let it dry :)
I have 3 from Heavenly Harvest now and I adore them.
Shirlpunzel May 7th, 2008, 09:26 PM I have a comb from hairsense that is a manmade type of bone; water doesn't seem to bother it in the slightest. So far I've had it maybe six months with no problems. Of course, I also oil my hair, and so I'm pretty sure the comb is thus getting oiled regularly too.
truepeacenik May 7th, 2008, 10:03 PM For those who own horn, what is the care and feeding?
I was given some lovely black dragon gaged earrings.
I'd never buy horn for myself, but these had been at a home for a few weeks and the owner stretched, thus they came to me.
I'm oiling with jojoba.
Is this Ok, should I find something else?

I put coconut oil on my horn comb once every month or so. I just use that because I already have it. It seems fine.
missy60 May 8th, 2008, 01:12 PM Ok so if I want to try it I would be better off to continue using my shower comb and only use the horn on damp or dry hair right? I sometimes have to comb the main last layer of my hair because its just so thin and if I break up the curls a little it looks like I have more hair there.
Thanks everyone for your advice. Oh you have to oil it also? Warping and splintering oh my. How is that prevented simply by not using it on wet hair? See I know nothing about these combs, everyones input has been great
lora410 May 8th, 2008, 01:29 PM I have a yak bone comb which i think is pretty much the same thing. I love love love it to pieces.

Horn is basically the same material as our fingernails, and you know what happens to them when they remain wet for a long time. Other oils are fine, but it is traditionally recommended to coat a horn comb with lanolin.

The advice that came with mine (purchased from ebay) was to not expose it to hot water to avoid warping and splintering. I flick mine through damp hair without any trouble. Again, horn is keratin like our fingernails, and running your fingernails through damp hair briefly doesn't cause much trouble. However, think about what washing dishes daily can do to them. It's the same effect.
missy60 May 9th, 2008, 07:50 AM I get it now excellent explanations I think I will try one. Thanks everyone
