View Full Version : I used LUSH Henna (RAVE)

In case anyone is wondering, I used LUSH Henna on my hair last Sunday.

I waited a couple of days to post so I can really see how my hair behaves.

My hair is a little longer than shoulder length, medium to dark brown and colored with 30-day dye every 6 weeks for the past year. My hair has gone through a few trims because of damaged ends but recently it has been pretty healthy with a few split ends.

In the last month or so I stopped using my round brush to style and barely use heat any more. My hair is much softer and I can go longer without washing since this change. I decided on Henna because my hair was in need of some color and I didn't want to undo all the good I did by using chemical coloring.

I purchased one bar of Caca Brun for about $20 USD. I chipped off a small piece and poured a few tablespoons of boiling water over it to melt. I used the mixture on the hair I collected off of my hair brush. I washed and dried the collected hair before the strand test. I didn't wait the recommended three hours on the strand test because I figured if the hair would turn green, it would happen within an hour. I washed and dried the hair after one hour and looked closely in sunlight. The color was a reddish brown with no green. Since the strand test was successful I went ahead with hennaing my hair.

I grated about half the bar with a vegetable grater. The grater is metal so I got worried but decided to go ahead with the project. I put the grated Henna in a plastic salad bowl and poured about a cup of microwave boiled red wine. I mixed the Henna and wine with a wooden spoon and it melted beautifully. I added a little boiling water to make the mixture thinner. The smell was awful and made me gag a few times, but as the mixture cooled down just a little it was ok.

I brushed my hair and applied the mixture with my bare hands. I didnt section my hair or goof around with doing my roots first, I just covered my hair with the goop and rubbed my head until all of my hair was covered. I wrapped my hair with saran wrap and went on with my day. I think the Henna gave me a headache because of the smell, but other than that it wasn't too uncomfortable. It does leak a little though so you gotta be careful. My head stayed pretty hot.

After three hours I was a little worried because the Henna was very green and had not changed color at all and I was skeptical that it was going to color my hair. I also got worried that if it did color my hair, it would be green. After a nearly nervous breakdown I jumped in the shower and began making a mess of my bathroom. HOLY MOLY was this hard to rinse out! I tried hot water, cold water, shampooing... but finally used loads of conditioner and got it all out. My tub was a complete disaster. It wasn't too hard to wash off, just a pain in the butt to deal with cleaning it right away.

After dealing with the cleanup I was finally able to take a good look in the mirror and decide if I must shave my head or not. Thankfully not!

After my hair dried it was this pretty brown, not very different from my color before, but a little deeper and much more shiny. My hair looks healthy. The shine is gorgeous, and best of all, no damage! My split ends didn't increase, still just a few. The hair has a very slight reddish tint in the sun light, but not very visible indoors.

I am very happy with my Henna experience. Considering that I only needed half of the bar for my hair, the cost is the same as box color.

I am not sure if this is the right location for this thread, but I just wanted to share with everyone about my Henna experience.

I've used Lush henna and like it too. Pretty sure it's not compound henna - I've even bleached over it and it's been OK.

Glad I'm not the only one who likes it :D

No, it's definitely not compound. However, if you bleach over any of their hennas other than the Caca Rouge, you may get green hair due to the fact that all of the other colors (the marron, the brun, the noir) have indigo in them. Indigo and bleach don't always play nice. :)

ETA: I like Lush too, I got the famed conditioning benefits from LUSH more so than from the pure plant powder. I think my hair likes coco butter.

Oh are you currently using and enjoying Caca Rouge by any chance? If so, I'd love to hear what you think of the particular color you get, and how you mix etc. :D

I use Lush henna too, I find the best way to get it out is with lots of conditioner and gentle rinsing. :)

Well, thanks! I haven't gone back to it just yet, but I'm set to use it on my next henna. :)

I mixed wine with my henna once and will never do it again. The smell was horrible and gave me a terrific headache. Congrats on your results!

Congratulations on your first experience with henna. I got great results from Caca Noir, but it is more difficult to rinse out than powdered henna.

I like a glass of wine occasionally, but would never think of using it for a rinse with the henna, does the wine also add colour? I have the red henna here at home. I've used henna in the past but it made very little difference to my hair and I couldn't see any benefit it in really considering all the mess it makes.

However I want to give it another try and this post reminded me of the unused henna I have at home.

Thanks for such an informative report of your experience.

That's wonderful! Congrats on your first henna! I've never used Lush Henna, but I used to play around with adding cocoa butter and Irish moss powder to my henna mix a couple of years ago and remember that it was very conditioning. I had to stop using that recipe because it didn't cover my grays as well as I would have liked. But I don't think :ponder: I was using BAQ henna at the time. I am thinking of experimenting with this again.

Glad your henna experience went well! I have used Caca Rouge quite a few times, but my new love is Jamila super-sift. My complaint with the LUSH hennas is it is hard to get them to melt and not be lumpy.

I have been having a lovely time this week, having done three henna's with Caca Rouge. I love the smell; hate the grit, and adore the red lights I get - which are golden red and no burgundy (for me). Also love the smell at mixing and application (but not the 'after' smell - all henna's make my scalp smell of... well, never mind).

I dip my head in a bucket several times to clear the worst off, before attempting to shower the rest away. Works quite well.

this sounds like just the product i was looking for, actually, something with little of a red effect. would it work if i mixed this with the caca noir? im fond of very dark brown hair. (natural color = dark chestnut)

Oh no jojo, I've been henna'ing for a couple of years, on and off - and off and on... :D

Tangles, I don't know. I do know that people mix the various caca's thoough. The only pic I can remember seeing of Noir mixed with Rouge looked a cold auburn - but I think it was over lightish hair. Why don't you go to the Lush forum - they have a couple of threads dedicated to 'caca heads'! Also reviews of the various caca's on 'usa.lush.com' (look under 'hair' in left column). :eyebrows:

ETA: Ooops, sorry jojo. I thought you were talking to me (self-centred little beast that I am!). :o

I have used the Caca Rouge once, it was a beautifuly conditioning treatment. My hair got very pretty red highlights were it was bleached few years ago, and on the virgin hair it was a warm coppery-red-brown. Then, few months ago I used the Caca Noir. That didn't have much impact on the hair color, it just darkened it, and of course, conditioned it.

@Tangles : You could choose from 4 different combinations of henna+indigo that Lush make. The Rouge has the highest % of henna and it has no indigo;
the Marron has more henna + less indigo
the Brun has more indigo + less henna
the Noir has the most indigo + the least henna
I suppose you could try the Marron or Brun, as they both have henna+indigo in not very different proportions.
