View Full Version : Have You Ever Used Banana As a Conditioner nastasska April 28th, 2008, 07:14 PM I was thinking of making my own concoction of mashed up Banana,Avocado and Coconut Oil as a deep treatment conditioner do you think it would work:confused: Flaxen April 28th, 2008, 08:47 PM I made a recipe very similar to that some years ago. It was impossible to rinse out of my hair, and the residue stuck in between the teeth of my comb, dried there, and I had to throw away the comb. My advice for the urge to condition with banana comes from this graphic that bunniee made. :agree:  http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa221/Cheeseistheword/bananagirl.jpg nastasska April 28th, 2008, 08:54 PM I'm so glad you posted that:cheese: I was actually going to buy some Bananas this afternoon now I think I'll just get a couple of Avocados:) Do you remember the Body Shops Banana Conditioner It was really good and gave me the idea I wish I knew how they made it Aisha25 April 28th, 2008, 09:19 PM I used bananas in a recipe too and it was so bad in my hair afterwards:(. never going that route again.Avacados is great i tried it with mayo and wow nice. Carolyn April 28th, 2008, 09:41 PM Back away from the bananas NOW! :scared: No no no! Don't do it! I made a banana conditoner way way back when we were at LHL. I used mashed banana, mayo, EVOO, and some regular conditioner. The banana bits stuck in my hair. It was like HAIR SNOT! It took days to get rid of it all. My hair stunk so bad. All I could smell was bananas for days. I have no been able to eat banana anything since then. The stench just makes me ill, even years later. sweetkandi April 28th, 2008, 09:51 PM Thats too bad, cuz bananas smell so good! lol kwaniesiam April 28th, 2008, 09:55 PM I think the caramel treatment has banana as an ingredient in it. Should be a thread on that somewhere in the recipe forum. I love that picture. Very true. Banana would NOT rinse out of my fine, thin hair the one time I tried it. They certainly are tasty though ;) Koala Kim April 28th, 2008, 10:01 PM I use a jar of organic banana baby food. Pureed banana rinses out waaay better. :) Which reminds me...it's been a long time since I've done that banana, molasses, and something else treatment. I think it was a variation of Snowy's SMT. I think. Tresses April 29th, 2008, 11:34 AM I use a jar of organic banana baby food. Pureed banana rinses out waaay better. :) Yes, yes, yes. Having done both (mashed the banana myself and using the stage 1 baby food bananas), I fully agree! No matter how well you think you've mashed that banana...you haven't. You just haven't. :o Flaxen April 29th, 2008, 03:24 PM Do you remember the Body Shops Banana Conditioner It was really good and gave me the idea I wish I knew how they made it Yes I do! I liked it a lot, too. :wail: Delila April 29th, 2008, 04:24 PM I'll third the rec to use baby food bananas, not one you've mashed yourself. Poolsoflaughter April 29th, 2008, 04:39 PM I made a recipe very similar to that some years ago. It was impossible to rinse out of my hair, and the residue stuck in between the teeth of my comb, dried there, and I had to throw away the comb. My advice for the urge to condition with banana comes from this graphic that bunniee made. :agree:  http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa221/Cheeseistheword/bananagirl.jpg ^ That is the funniest illustration ever!!:spitting: Anyways, back to the original subject, no, I have not tried banana, but I recall a while back that someone else tried it, and they were picking it out of their hair for a week...:( ETA: oh, okay, I just read that it was Carolyn! Sorry... Kirin April 29th, 2008, 05:38 PM if using fresh, i would highly suggest pressing it through a fine mesh strainer first! Just mash em up, then put them in a strainer and press it through with the back of a spoon. Ursula April 29th, 2008, 05:45 PM I have used overripe fresh banana as a conditioner, once. Put it through a mesh strainer before using it, and mixed it with some aloe gel and some regular conditioner, as well. It worked nicely as a deep treatment. You must strain banana. The problem is that banana has a decent amount of fiber and seeds in it, and you don't want those in your hair. There will be noticable pulp left in the strainer after you have strained it, and the mash will be almost like a gel in its texture. Or strained baby food banana, as others have said. The early "stage" bananas, which are strained, not the lumpy stuff. AmericanWoman April 29th, 2008, 06:05 PM It will work fine without chunks if you put it in the blender. Mashing won't do it. Most of the problems reported with the Caramel Treatment was becouse they did not follow directions. The Caramel DT works great.Makes more than one DT too. |
