View Full Version : My Cocoa Powder Experiment
BrianaFineHair April 27th, 2008, 01:44 PM For kicks and giggles I did the cocoa powder experiment. I think it left a VERY slight color change. It did leave my hair soft; so no damage for me.
I smell like chocolate mint :D

amaiaisabella April 27th, 2008, 02:11 PM I see a decrease in the redness of your hair, but it is very slight. Perhaps more cocoa powder might be necessary?
Not sure if it's a permanent tint- let us know if it fades by your next wash!
BrianaFineHair April 27th, 2008, 02:16 PM I don't think it will be permanent either, unless I did it daily for a week or so, which is too much of a hastle. It would be easier to do a daily sage or rosemary tea rinse, imo.
Thanks for looking :)
mellie April 27th, 2008, 02:41 PM Interesting though! Thank you for posting pics!

Hi Mellie :), what I found interesting about this is we all know how chocolate stains (teeth, a favorite white tee-shirt), so I wonder if done enough (like tea rinses) would it deposit more tint or color and would it have stronger staying power. Thing is, it's not a user friendly process - once a week max for me, if I decided to commit to it.
mellie April 27th, 2008, 04:34 PM Hi BrianaFineHair! I wonder if melted Baker's chocolate might work better than cocoa?
BrianaFineHair April 27th, 2008, 04:59 PM Hi BrianaFineHair! I wonder if melted Baker's chocolate might work better than cocoa?
I never thought about that! Hmmm, add some coconut oil...Make it real creamy! :agree: :applause Talk about smelling yummy!
ktani April 27th, 2008, 05:10 PM I think that the real problem here would be getting the cocoa or chocolate to the hair and not eating it first, lol.
I know that I would be tempted.
I have eaten unsweetened chocolate - not bad at all.
Celebrian April 27th, 2008, 05:42 PM I've been meaning to do this for at least a year now, but didn't get round to it. Nightshade tested it for me on white mohair, and I tested on a bit of white cotton. We found that it left a slight brown stain (old LHC days). But then, I suppose it would. We never pursued the matter further, so I don't know if the color survived on the mohair, and I've lost my cotton thingy
The idea of build-up is reasonable I think, and if nothing else, the cocoa fats will condition the hair.
I kept threatening to take one of my husbands treasured 85% cocoa chocolate bars to melt and pour over my hair - but he hid them. Saying that, it probably wouldn't be very good to do that without mixing it with something to stop it hardening on the hair! .:misskim:
ktani April 27th, 2008, 05:49 PM I love the logic of a chocoholic, lol.
I actually find the idea of dying the hair this way quite fascinating - I look forward to reading more results.
BrianaFineHair April 27th, 2008, 06:19 PM Can you imagine mixing it with a little bit of coconut oil? ALMOND JOY!!!!
I'll try the bakers chocolate with coconut oil soon. :D
mellie April 27th, 2008, 06:27 PM Haha! Sounds delicious! :-)

LOL! I best buy myself a pack of Almond Joy and REALLY get into the experience! I mean, it would just be pure agony without tantilizing my sense of taste as well.
I'll take a photo of my head wrapped in plastic eating an almond joy :D

I can't wait!!
kwaniesiam April 27th, 2008, 07:25 PM That sounds like fun! I wonder if since it seemed to decrease the redness, would it tone down henna ever so slightly?

Not two months ago I did a medium brown Rainbow "henna". ( I know it's not the real stuff, but just herbs ) It left a slight reddish tint to my very dark brown hair.
Nat242 April 27th, 2008, 10:01 PM Thanks for being brave enough to experiment, and for posting your results.
Hey, I have an idea...why not make some flourless chocolate cake and double the recipe? Half for a cake, half for your hair? It would be a protein treatment too...all those eggs :p

jessie58 April 27th, 2008, 10:31 PM Oh my gosh, my dogs would be chasing me around the house if I tried this. I do like the idea of natural and yummy hair darkeners though.

Hahahaha Thats funny. I know I have this problem when doing honey rinses. I always eat honey lol.
what about coffee? Anyone tried that? I did last wash. Just made strong coffee and poured it through. Made my hair SO soft and silky. And not really colour change though. (sorry to hijack)
jel April 28th, 2008, 04:32 AM Yummy! I'd love my hair to smell of chocolate...
But I don't know if it's the flash or something, your hair looks lighter (to my eyes!) in the 'after' photo - less red, and lighter! I would have imagined a cocoa treatment to give a darker, richer hue
Pegasus Marsters April 28th, 2008, 04:37 AM I know if my hair smelt like chocolate I'd be chewing on my ends.
Are you people mad? :silly: Stop wasting good chocolate like that! Some of us need it when we have PMS ;)
Nightshade April 28th, 2008, 10:10 AM Fwiw, you can see the color I got on mohair (which was almost next to nothing) in this post (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=48736&postcount=24):)
Granted, I didn't simmer it. Perhaps if you did that you'd get a stronger stain?

Ah, thanks Nightshade. Actually, I don't know if it's my monitor, but it looks to me as if there was a definite tinting on the left strand, no?
I suppose the question is, would it remain and build, or just fade out completely?

Oh, it tinted, just not that much. It didn't fade either, though I didn't try washing it with shampoo either.

No fading? That's maybe good to know for the chocolate hair people... :D
somethingwicked May 4th, 2008, 08:52 PM Oh, goody, I'm glad I'm not crazy :) I just tried this again - the first time I did it was a year or so ago, and I noticed a few days after that my hair seemed darker. Tried it again today, and it IS darker. I thought about taking pics to compare, but I didn't because I didn't have the patience to get the lighting just right so it would be exact for before and afters.
I have a blonde streak now with fading magenta color in it, so I corralled that part out and coated it with Humectress and almond oil. Then I made a mix of a can of coconut milk, a couple of big spoonfuls of Hersheys cocoa, a good splash of olive oil and some scraping out of my big jar of cocount oil. Soaked my length in it, then poured the rest over my head, put it in a bun then slapped on a plastic shower cap. I think I left my brew in for about four hours, then shampooed. Now that it's completely dry, I can confirm it did darken a little. It seems to have worked its magic best on my sun lightened streaks, so everything's kind of an even dark brown. It didn't cover grey, though :( IIRC from the first time I did this, the effect did last a while, but I don't think it was permenant. Now after reading some of the other posts here, I wonder if repeat applications would give a darker color and maybe even get after some of those grey hairs.
And the dogs LOVED licking out my bowl and going after the porch drips, despite being lectured on the dangers of chocolate to dogs.
mellie May 5th, 2008, 06:44 AM Very interesting! Thanks for the update!
