View Full Version : Where can I buy Rice Bran?

Ahhhhhrg!! Sometimes I just want to MOVE from Norway...

First, there is the VO5 conditioner I've been looking for all over. Then, when I ask for just any cone-free conditioner, the hair dressers (or the staff in whichever shop I'm in) do not even seem to know what I am talking about! And for the Shikakai, I haven't even bothered trying yet...

Anyway, I'm just dying to try the dry washing method with Rice Bran, and I've been looking for this wonder product ever since last summer. I've asked at health food stores (I even contacted the largest wholesale dealer in Norway), and they was not able to provide. I've asked at different national "information banks" on food, grain etc., and all they can tell me is "we're sorry". I've asked in gorumet stores, restaurants etc. - and people just raise their eyebrows and do not seem to even know what I am talking about.

Does anyone know about a good online shop in Scandinavia (preferably), or UK, Europe - even the US, where I can get Rice Bran? Or maybe even a good shop here in Norway? (wan't keep my breath about the last one though...).

Anyone else been washing their hair with Rice Bran? Is it as good as I've heard?

(Perhaps the easiest solution to the above finding-problem is someone telling me that Rice Bran sucks for hair washing... :D)

:)

Do you have an Asian market where you live? You can ask them if they have it or you could look for it, it might be called nuka. Or you could by it from off the internet. I've never heard of washing with rice bran, sounds interesting

Thank you! :) There is a small Asian market where I live, and I've been there to look for it. I did not see it though, but I did not ask for it. I'll go there again, and ask for either Rice Bran or Nuka. If they don't have it, perhaps they can get it?

Bob's Red Mill sells rice bran (http://www.bobsredmill.com/catalog/index.php?action=showdetails&product_ID=329). The shipping can be ridiculously expensive, however, even within the US. :(

The easiest approach to me would be to go back to the source where you first heard about this method.

Did you keep the information?

Do you know the method to use?

Sometimes the source offers suggestion on where to purchase the product.

I have never heard of dry washing hair with rice bran - that in itself means nothing though.

There was an orris root dry shampoo thread a while ago here on the now archived boards.

Here is is an article on natural dry shampoos.

According to the article on Wiki, bran can go rancid fairly quickly.

Rice bran is a common horse food, so you might try a local feed shop. You may have to buy a fairly large bag of it though, but it's pretty cheap.

I tried this, it was bad for me, and I lost tons of hair. Actually it was on wet hair, not dry. Once was enough and I won't try it again. I like it as a face wash though.
I got mine here: http://www.iherb.com/Default.aspx?gclid=CMrUkI2G_JICFQKnlgod_lp2Gw

I did read about this in the old LHC, so the thread should be in the archive. I tried to open the archive and search for it though, but I got a message that I was not allowed...

Maybe someone from that thread will respond here.

If bran does go rancid quickly - it may not be the best choice.

It's recommended to store rice bran (and brown rice) in the freezer to keep it from going rancid.

There is also this thread in the new forum:

See Catladyintown's post on page 2. She tells about rice bran and her experience with it.

WOW! This was really new to me:) Such things we learn here at LHC! This is definately worth a try! I have been googeling Rice bran on Norwegian sites though, and if it was a common product for horses - perhaps the searches would have brought me some providers... But I'll definately ask at the Co op or something. (Is it still called Co Op in the US? Isn't this a place where they provide stuff for farming?).

Hi Ktani rice bran can last about a year in the freezer. Girlcat36 sorry it did not work out for you. But have you tried rice water for your hair. It cleans very well. I make my own rice water and use it when my hair is very dirty. Here is a link. HTH

This company looks reasonable and ships internationally.

ETA: I do not know the shippping cost but I checked - they do ship to Norway.
It would not let me see the charge without my filling in details.

Thank you very much Ktani! :flower:

I just noticed in my above post that I actually misunderstood Catladyintown a little.... When she says "Ktani rice bran can last...", I actually thought that Ktani was a brand of rice brand, and that is why I ask underneath if someone knows where to get ktani rice bran... *LOL*.

Sorry about this!

No worries.

That is funny, lol.

I thought that you were asking me directly for information that I might have or know about.

Glad I could help - even if there is no brand of rice that has my name - or the other way around, lol.
