...has glued itself shut! Some nimrod put it in the fridge and now I can't get it open. I mostly use it on skin now, and I really need some. Grr. I tried running it under hot water and it still won't budge. Pointless thread, sorry. I just need to vent my frustration of being locked out of my brand new jar of oil :(

Maybe put it in a sunny window tomorrow? Or make the person who put it in the fridge open it for you.

Does your jar have a plastic top? If so, could you put it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften the oil? ETA: The hot water trick never seems to work for me unless the water is nearly boiling...

Or make the person who put it in the fridge open it for you.

I second this!

Try putting some water in a pot on the stove, put the heat on low, put the jar in the water and let it sit for a while - your coconut oil may melt a little, but it will probably loosen the lid enough for you to get it open. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I always kept my jar of coconut oil in the fridge. Besides the hot water, there a trick where you bang on the lid on the edge all the way around with the handle of a butter knife.

Hand it off to a guy to open. They have superior forearm strength ya know.

I agree, if it's plastic, pop it in the microwave!

I agree, plus men often seem to love showing off with it.... ;)

Bang it lid side down off of a floor like you do with spagetti jars, and then try opening it.

Is it due to sticky coconut oil or a vacuum? If it's vaccuum, bang on the lid or put a knife under the side of the lid like you try to open the lid with the knife.

I got this trick off an old lady once, and it often works. Put an elastic band round the lid and try turning it. This gives you purchase on the lid itself, whcih may well have oil residue on, making it harder to grip and seperate jar and lid! I suppose any rubber would do it, perhaps even putting on a pair of dry, rubber washing up gloves might?

Please don't put a sealed jar in the microwave... it could explode. Plus if the jar is plastic, the oil could get hot enough to melt the plastic. I'd try the jar in a pot of boiling water. It should loosen the lid.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I think it was vacuumed shut. I finally managed to get it open after melting the contents in some hot water and sliding a knife under the part of the lid to let some pressure out. Oh btw, I was the dummy that stuck it in the fridge  it was really hot out and I didn't want it to get funny.

Don't say it had to be a dummy who stuck it in the refrigerator. I kept mine in the refrigerator. Seems perfectly intelligent to me.

I only meant I was a dummy because it got stuck shut :silly: Normally I do keep it in there to avoid meltyness.
