I have a jar of coconut oil and when it gets warm it melts and get harder when cool. My oil has turned liquid and solid a couple times over. Is that bad for the oil?

I have yet to have rancid cocnut oil :) Shanarana April 24th, 2008, 06:23 AM Great, thank you. :) I put some in a small container that I put in my purse. Needless to say that I won't be doing that again. Violeta April 24th, 2008, 07:02 AM It should be ok. As far as I know, coconut oil has a pretty long shelve live however you can maybe just scoop out a teaspoon at the time rather than melt the whole thing ;) Shanarana April 24th, 2008, 07:03 AM It should be ok. It gets warm in my room and melts itself. :) Violeta April 24th, 2008, 07:16 AM I don't melt it. It gets warm in my room and melts itself. :) O yeah, that’s true, there is no need. Do you keep it in the fridge? I use oils for my face (camellia, watermelon, raspberry, avocado and many others) and I keep them in the fridge. When I need some I take the little bottle out, leave it at room temp for 30 mins or so, take some in a dark dropper bottle then back in the cold. Never had a problem with any of them. Nah, you just need a waterproof (well, oilproof) container that won't leak. You may find it solidified against the lid some days, but oh well. JCFantasy23 April 24th, 2008, 07:27 AM Melting and solidifying doesn't hurt coconut oil. It's one of the longer lasting oils. Bought fresh and pure, it can last several years before turning rancid, so no worries. angelthadiva April 24th, 2008, 07:41 AM Mine has done the same from liquid to solid and back and forth many times...I was worried at first, but it's never smelled rancid...I have a thing about putting stinky stuff in my hair :nono: I never refrigerate it, it just doesn't make sence for me to do that...Since I use it after CWC, bathroom is upstairs and refrig is down...What can I say, I'm lazy! Patrycja April 24th, 2008, 07:46 AM I keep my huge jar in a cool dark place but it still melts...anyway-I use a old baby food jar to put a little bit of oil in it and it hasn't leaked yet.Its also a bit better than having the big jar of oil in my bathroom.I know I've had some people think I've gone nuts....The trick to keep it from going rancid is to keep moisture/water out of the oil. spidermom April 24th, 2008, 08:23 AM When I had coconut oil, I kept a small jar upstairs and put the rest in the refrigerator, melting off a little more and refilling my jar as needed. I've been told that coconut oil is very stable, however, and takes a very long time to go rancid. But I'll do the same thing the next time I buy it. As long as it smells all right, it's good. Wavelength April 24th, 2008, 08:32 AM I've kept my big jar in the linen closet for nearly two years and it hasn't gone rancid yet! :) |
