Just popping in.

It's so humid and hot here in OH.
I hate the weather but my hair loves it :)
It would have been a great down day if my hair wasn't so heavy.
I did wear it in a low pony which showed of my nice waves/curls yet it was off my shoulders.

I am in OH too! The humidity, Ugh, but my hair is frizzing. Got it in a bun, I found if I oil it a bit that helps.

Ahhh... OH. 'Tis true, my hair loves the humidity, but eurgh we just had a storm yesterday and it's all hot and muggy.

I was thinking that too Girlcat!!! Are you doing well aside from hair also? Thanks Curlsgirl. I am recovering from thyroid surgery now so my new obsession is the ugly swollen scar at the base of my neck. :disgust: My hair is now the least of my problems!

Girlcat, your hair looks great! Congratulations! Thank you, yzkaloha!

My sister in law had that same surgery and her scar now is a thin faintly white line. She also had 3 kids after her radiation and surgery. Hopefully you'll heal quickly.

Has anyone here had anyone say, "Your hair would look so awesome straight!" but then when you blew it out, they didn't have anything to say about it? That happened to me. Last year at school when I wasn't wearing my hair in an updo every day and people could see the texture, they'd be like, "Dude, straighten your hair, it would look so cute!" After months of this I actually did. One person said, "Hmm, your hair doesn't look as good straight as I thought it would," and no one else had anything to say about it. The next day I came in curly again and it was straight back to, "Straighten your hair!" Now I'm at a different school and I wear my hair up all the time, but on the two days this year that I've worn it down and curly I've gotten tons of compliments and people have said that I should wear it that way more often. ^_^Yeah I get way more compliments when it's down and curly. Not one person has said anything since I blew it out except how long it looks.

Thanks Curlsgirl. I am recovering from thyroid surgery now so my new obsession is the ugly swollen scar at the base of my neck. :disgust: My hair is now the least of my problems!

UGH! Poor thing! My Mom had that and she swears by vitamin E oil. You can't see her scar at all now. I am so sorry you are having to go through that and wish you a very speedy recovery!!! HUGS

My dad had it to girlcat36 and he didnt do anything special to his and you cant see it at all.

My hair hates humidity or is it just me that hates my hair when the humidity is so high. It has been so frizzy. I think I will have to up my conditioner and leave in amounts again to tame the frizz. I had dropped back alot on the amount of conditioner I was using because of build up dirty looking hair. I just cant get a routine going at all because my hair changes so much.

My routine had been diluted wash and conditioner a little gel and it was all good. Now it is dry and I have upped the gel to tame some of the frizz. Im going th have to increase the conditioner and lay off the shampoo on the length. Im thinking its the weather but I would think the warm weather would mean less conditioner instead of more.

I used to always wear my hair up from about ages 9 on until 15 because I was told around age 8 that I would look better with my hair up. At that time, I had huge curls and looked like I was 5. But when I got a bit older I started wearing my hair down more often and then got tired of it and so cut it to shoulder length. :scared:Now I'd never dream of that but back then I kept finding that everyone wanted it different than I was. So now I realise it's just that it's best to wear my hair whatever way I want to, regardless of what anyone else says. I'm glad that you're getting compliments this year on the curls, your hair's natural form. :)

I am recovering from thyroid surgery now so my new obsession is the ugly swollen scar at the base of my neck. :disgust: My hair is now the least of my problems!

I can second what others have said: scars can heal more quickly than most of think. The vitamin E rubbed onto the scar really will help it heal more quickly (as I can attest from experience) and if you're wanting something trendy to wear while it's healing, I have a friend who wore a silken scarf/kerchief tied at the base of her neck and it looked SO cute. I hope that you do heal soon and feel all better. :grouphug:

After I said that last night about no one commenting on my hair blown straight wouldn't you know someone did this morning. She said she really liked my hair down either like this or especially curly. She said it looks better down than up. Like okay I will wear it down all summer and let sweat drip off of me like rain  I guess it's nice but well LOL

Goldilocks...Curlsgirl...Missy60...30isthenewblack ...Morgwn...Starr...Thanks for the good wishes! I had radiation treatment to my neck last year, and that is hindering the healing of this incision. It is still quite swollen 4 weeks after surgery; I am using emu oil, tamanu oil, rose hip oil, cocoa butter, and manuka honey---just to name a few things in my scar arsenal!

hey girlcat, good luck with the healing!!! I hope you have vitamin E in that scar arsenal of yours!! After I burned most of the skin off my body (I was 4), doctors said I would be permanently deformed and never have hair. My mom bathed me in silvadine lotion and vitamin E every day for 8 months (plus no sunlight, at all). I now have un-deformed skin all over and a full head of hair. Go go vitamin E.

As a wurly...I just need to rant for a sec...

I wish my hair was either curly or straight....NOT both!! No kidding, I have chunks of my hair that spiral from the roots then go stick straight to the ends. It looks RIDICULOUS!!! And at the sides of my head there are strands that grow directly outwards at 90 degrees from my scalp and gravity does not seem to effect them. I look like a lioness.

There, rant over. I feel slightly better now :o

Can I join the club? My hair ranges from 2b/2c to 3b. NOT easy to control. :shake: I think that is why I have to deal with bedhead every day, fine texture+unpredictable wave/curl pattern=:dizzy:.

I had the absolute worst bedhead and uncontrollable sproinging until my hair was getting on towards APL dry. So Lamb and Rini, it does get better!

girlcat, I'm glad you're ok, and I hope your scar heals quickly!

It has been 95 and humid as hell here for the last 3 days.. I've been too hot and lazy to put my AC in, so my hair has been braided and oiled the whole time, and I wet it down in the shower morning and night! Wet hair is great for keeping cool.

My hair has a definate mind of its own. I wish to thank all you lovely people for the improvement to the way it looks over the last year that I've been mostly lurking here. I don't know what type it would be though, it never stays the same long enough to tell. The top few inches are straight. The rest of it is another story. When its wet, I can tuck it under my bra in the back. When its dry, it barely covers my neck. It dries up in about 8-10 curls that look like they've been just taken out of pincurls and have glued themselves into that shape. You can pull them and boing them and they just work their way right back up to the back of my neck. I shouldn't complain, its a definate improvement over what it used to be. It used to look like I styled it by sticking my finger in a lightsocket then going from there directly into hurricane force winds to finish it off! :eyebrows:

Hi! Welcome! Just wanted to say that Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in and KCKT curling custard are good for stretching out curls vere nicely. It works for a lot of 3b/3c curlies and beyond. You might check out the reviews on www.naturallycurly.com (http://www.naturallycurly.com) Just a thought! I like it myself a lot but it's a very different type of product (KCCC), some love it and some hate it.

Thanks Curlsgirl, I've wondered about trying some of the stuff from there a couple times, but I have been kinda hesitant because my hair is so fine and lightweight. What got rid of the frizz was using a mixture of coconut oil and cheap conditioner that I put on straight from the shower and then just leave it alone until it dries. Of course one drop too much and it looks darker and oily.

When I was young, I had totally straight, blond (almost white) hair. The older I got the darker it got, but it was still straight until my mid 30s. Then it turned gradually into wild hair.

I'm going to give those products a try that you recommended though, whats the use of trying to get long hair if it shrinks so much! :) Thanks a lot!

Well let me warn you, it takes some experimentation with the KCKT products. You may want to read the product reviews first. I would hate for you to spend the money and not like them. Course how will you know? Let me know if you do!

What blond thread???

You can do it and we can help! Honestly the longer my hair gets the easier it is and the more I like it! It is longer than it has ever been in my life right now and I LOVE it. Makes me wish I had had long hair long ago though. But I really didn't have a clue how to take care of it before LHC. Honestly it seems like I learn more every day too.

Curly checkin' in! Funny thing is, I never knew I was a curly until I cut my hair all off over 2 years ago. Bleaching and blowdrying fried it out of curly existence. People used to look at my daughter and say, "Where did she get all of those curls?" Not anymore. :D Curly is fabulous! :cheer:

Argh! It's so difficult having curly hair sometimes because my hairtype always seems to be changing! Lately I've been thinking that I should change my hairtype to just 3a because I really don't have any 3bs and my 3as are even less curly than a lot of the 3as here, but they're too spiraly to be waves most of the time. Sometimes they are more on the 2cish side. Then today I washed my hair and while I still had my loose 3as, I had a few little 3bs in there too!

I clip most of the time with duckbill clips. When I have to go somewhere while my hair is still wet I just flop the hair over to the other side of my part. I always take the clips out just before my hair gets dry and bend over and rub my fingers along the clipped part and scrunch out the crunch. I dont get any added frizz by touching my hair when it is almost dry. This always give me alot more volume and I dont get clip marks. The method I use I also learned on NC.com but Im not sure who is the one that does it.

Hi Curlies!!! I used my KCKT and KCCC again tonight. I forgot how much I liked it. It does stretch out the curl a bit but wow the shine and softness are unbeatable! I didn't even use coconut oil when it was almost dry this time. Didn't need it! Of course I used Dove conditioner. Detangling is much easier using that. I feel it is easier on my hair. I can see why some use cones when the tangles get worse as the hair gets longer. I'll see how it works after a few more times and if I notice any bad effects. I am sure some of the ones here with really long hair use them though. So they can't be THAT bad if you clarify regularly and I do that anyway. I can't stand buildup on my hair.

I'm finally joining in!

I thought I had frizzy straight hair before finding LHC. After CO washing, I found I was 2a. In the past 6-8 months or so, my hair has gotten more and more wavy, and I believe I am settling at 2c. I do get very weak spirals, but not spirally enough to make me think of a 3a. I can say that I truly understand the meaning of the word 'wurly' now. I am right in the middle of wurly! People in my day to day life call my hair curly, but I know people here wouldn't think so.

I've found a good little routine for myself, and I am really only occupied with finding a styling method that works well. I've done well with conditioner as a leave in, gel, and diffusing. I do know that my hair loses a lot of wave if I air dry, so I prefer the blow dryer.

My struggle right now is finding a way to get my waves to clump together a bit more so I can lose the stringy, 80's hairband look. :p I've got some reading to do on this thread!

Hi everyone! I changed my profile to 2c/3a. I feel lately my hair is just not as curly all the time. It may be my routine. I have gone for soft/silkier/less frizz lately rather than more curl due to tangling issues. I don't mind the curl being relaxed a bit. It's much easier to detangle and put up! I can still maximize my curl if I want to. I think it has something to do with the weight too.

How are all the curlies doing? Check in check in!! :cheese:

Hi Curlsgirl!! :waving:

You know, I think it's the weight of your hair now that is affecting the curl. Having recently had longer hair (now much shorter), I am thinking now that my hair is soooooo curly. It's just because it's short though and there is not as much weight! When my hair was longer, it was more wavy. Either way, I think your hair looks just splendid :inlove:

It's just because it's short though and there is not as much weight! When my hair was longer, it was more wavy. Either way, I think your hair looks just splendid :inlove:

Thanks Rini!!! It's always good to see your smiling posts and encouragement! I think you're right. I don't really miss the extra curl. It looks longer this way and feels better.

Hello! Checking in!

I reached my goal length of 30" (that's wet) and am hemming and hawing over where to go next. I always cut at this point.

I joined a summer bun challenge over at nc.com so I at least won't cut until the end of September.

I really don't want a big cut, I just want different layers in the back to perk up the curl.

What I'd love is shoulder length curl formation with waist length hair. :D

Ain't gonna happen. :)

Biggest surprise of recent times is that I need protein now - thank you RiotCrrl. It has really perked up my root curl in places to do a protein tx once a week. Months (like 10-11months) of hard core protein free mositurizing stuff got me moisturized alright, and now I need a bit of balance thrown in by adding protein. Go figure.

I'm just doing it once a week right now. I am 90% sure my hair can't take daily protein.

I hope that everyone is doing well!

Curlsgirl, I have noticed the same thing: I have less ringlets now with my hair nearing waist length. There's still plenty of wave (and shrinkage ), but the longer it gets, the more it gets wavy and wurly versus curly. That's also fine with me: it's easier to detangle and easier to twist up. But it goes to show how hair can definitely change when it gets to longer lengths.

Redcelticcurls, where in the world have you been???? I've missed you!!! I am at 30 inches too but honestly I love my hair more the longer it gets. Hope you don't cut too much  Come around more often ya hear?

yzkaloha, Ditto for me!!! I like it! Last night I detangled and then braided today and my braid looks smoothe and nice and not frizzy at all, MUCH easier to detangle too.

Hi Curlsgirl, and thanks!

I'm committed to not cut until the end of September at any rate. :)

I tend to feel the opposite though. I wonder what the point is of growing it long if I lose the curl. Lol! Well, it still looks fine, so we'll just see what happens.

i've recently started washing only with either BS or rhassul clay and my hair and scalp just looooovvvvve it.
i had to shampoo while traveling last week (with one of Aubrey's) and my shedding was crazy while washing and detangling (almost 3 or 4 times more than the rate with BS or clay). i'm just thrilled to finally have learned what was the culprit in my shedding almost after 2 years of trying a million things to curb it. i'm still in disbelief how it could be so, but it's a fact. no poo for me anymore!

just a bit of ranting here :(
i've now resolved that i absolutely hate Aubrey's HSR conditioner. despite all the raves, it absolutely does nothing for my hair ....no moisture, no detangling effect....and though i only used to slightly dislike the scent, i now have developed a hate relationship with the scent as well! my bottle seems to last forever and since i've accidentally broken the cap, i can't even swap it. i'd feel bad letting it go to waste, but it totally is not my thing and i would never even touch another bottle.
any suggestions as to a good use i can put it to (my hair doesn't like SMTs either and this is in no way moisturizing for me anyway!)

It really doesnt detangle very well in my hair. I still use it for a deep pre wash treatment and I also apply a little to my ends as a leave in. I use it as a conditioner also if I use a detangler afterwards that gives me a little slip.

I've been CO for so long but I was using heavy cones until I joined LHC.. they dried both my hair and my scalp out I guess, cause this year using natural products I've had problems with greasiness and itching. Anyway I'm definately adding shampoo to my routine.

I wonder if I will ever have just a few products I use the same way all the time? I'm constantly experimenting with new products and techniques.. from what I've read on this thread few curlies and wurlies seem to have a set-in-stone routine. Maybe out hair just likes variety!

I don't really have a reliable every time get great hair routine though. I guess my best is the KCKT and KCCC for now. It used to be AG re:coil but for some reason I don't get the same results as I used to. I have found what leave-ins I like too as far as conditioners. BWC and Biolage conditioning balm always work well for me in that way. I only CWC about once a week now with a diluted Aveda color guard poo and usually rotate several different first and second conditioners.

I recently purchased Malibu 2000 for well water and its pretty good for problem water. The shampoo is sulfate free but it has the stuff in it to keep the minerals from attaching to your hair. I use the conditioner for CO washes. I havent really been using shampoo but Im going to use it before I color about once a month or so.

Question re: measuring curly hair. I know it's a stupid question, but, do you pull it straight, or do you just measure where it falls against your back loosely? I've never, ever measured, and, since starting to read and post here, I feel like I want to know my specific progress or lack there of...It feels like the layers/bangs when I have them grow like crazy, but the ultimate length seems stagnant. I really dont measure but I think you would get more accurate results measuring when its wet and combed straight. If your hair is like mine some days it can curl up way more then other days making it seem so much shorter.

My hair is SUPER curly when wet, and as it dries it gets limper and more sad looking. Now, I live in Vegas, so it's a hundred and stupid and there is ZERO humidity...but I would still like it to look nice even when dry--without the crunch of product. I've become very attached to my soft curlies, after all. SO in conclusion...what do I do?

Throw away all of your humectants is my advice. If it has glycerin, get rid of it.

I don't know about no product... you could experiment with only leave in conditioners (that don't have humectants). A lot of us need some kind of hold/definition product though.

I cannot get my hair to look decent without some kind of product when it's really humid. What I do is scrunch out the crunch. In other words apply moisturizing leave-in if you need it and then add the gel or other thing with crunch. Let it dry TOTALLY before touching it except to scrunch it in initially and then scrunch it gently from the bottom to the top all around like an accordian. I flip my head over to do it and sometimes use a bit of oil. When you get done the crunch should be totally gone. I have never used one I could scrunch out. Then you are left with pretty curls that will "hold" better and resist frizz. Some of my favorite crunchers are Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets, Kinky Curly Curling Custard or from the drugstore, LA Sports gel or Pantene curl scrunching gel. There are many others that people like just depends on your preference and hair. I couldn't even wear mine down in that humidity at all don't know how you can do it!!!

Oh there is a deme of scrunching out the crunch at www.jessicurl.com if you haven't seen it.

Hello! I have wavy hair currently. The shorter it is, the more wave/spirals I have. When I last cut it to Shoulder Length back 14 years ago, it was mostly lots of spirals, with wave also. Now mostly wave, with just a few spirals. I assume that would be due to the length pulling down.
I am new to this web site, and already love it. :)

The longer my hair gets the farther down the spirals move. Usually about the bottom 8 inches or so is spirally and above that it's just wavy. My curls are very fragile though, comb or detangle them and they'll fall right out. Spritz a bit of water on them and scrunch and they're back!

The humidity is really high here though, and will be all summer so I'm ignoring the halo and frizz. It's the only thing I can do.

I have a problem with this too. Funny thing is I am beginning to think my hair being in much better condition now than ever before may be a factor! Along with the healthy hair comes more slip, more taming, less frizz and it seems less curl.

For decent crunch that I can scrunch out but still have nice curls, I like Rockin' Ringlets by Jessicurl or LA Sports gel. However, lately I haven't even really been getting much curl from that. I need to take a pic of my hair in the back again curly so you all can see what I mean. I like it but I guess I do wish I had the curls back sometimes and the volume too. I used to fight the volume but now it's smooth and no poofiness at ALL. KCCC gives me a little volume though it doesn't really enhance the curl. I wonder if I am using too much leave-in conditioner. I LOVE the shine and softness of my hair now though. It has never been this healthy. All due to LHC and YOU guys especially you curlies!!!

I think my hair is very good condition with the c/o washing & putting oil on the ends of the hair and Daktarin (MN) assisted & grew an inch in winter (I live in Australia). However, it looked bad every day of that month. I couldn't wear it down. It looked really limp, lacked body & was really greasy.

I have been conditioning my hair for about a year now so that probably isn't the problem although I have gone back to shampooing my hair for now & conditioning the ends & it looked better within a week. I have developed a bit of obsession with oiling the ends but I think I should only do that once a week as I think that seems to be the only difference in my routine & I may have been over conditioning my hair. I don't think the Daktarin (MN) made a difference.

I noticed that someone on the board with very a similar texture to my hair uses shampoo and conditioner only rarely & I think with my hair, the less I do with it & the cheaper products I use, the more it seems to like it. I use Tresemme shampoo. Maybe, if it's not broke, I shouldn't try and fix it? Curl definition has never been my problem but volume is?

If I was to list my priorities in terms of hair, it would be 1) voume, 2) curl & 3) length. I want to reach a compromise where my hair is healthy, happy & growing but still has volume, life & vitality so I guess I'll just have to experiment. I want to break the cycle where my hair grows, it breaks or I have to cut off the ratty ends.

i may have mentioned this already, but if not: i completely abandoned poo for BS and rhassoul clay washes (i alternae the two or use twice of one in a row and once of the other according to the mood!) about 3 weeks ago and could not be happier. my curl definition (which was never a problem really) has been excellent, i have volume, and best of all this may have been the answer to my inexplicable shedding. i was traveling and had to use one of AO's poos as i had forgottne my clay and BS and my shed on tha wash was three time as normal. my scalp is as calm as i could only wish with the new method as well. liberation from poo is of corse highly welcome as well!

Fellow wurly/curlies, I'm bumming a bit right now and perhaps just need a bit of encouragement from others with similar hair types.

Over the past 8 months (a bit less) my hair has grown 4 inches when measured wet. That averages about 0.5 inches per month, which is about average and that's fine in my book. In contrast, when my hair is dry it appears that I've only gained about 2 inches. I just looked at pics last night from back in December when I was wearing the same tank top. In all seriousness, it looks like I've gained maybe 1.5 inches, 2 inches max. It discourages me only because it feels like it's taking twice as long as average to gain length and I feel like my chances of having hair that looks waist-length when dry by the time next May rolls around is looking pretty slim. (If the present rate keeps up, it seems my hair will only appear 2.5 inches longer in 10 months, even if it's 5 inches longer when wet.)

I guess I'm grumping because I'm wondering if it gets better with time periods for length gains as the hair gets longer or if it's always going to take approximately double-time for a wurly/curly to grow their hair versus a straight-haired person.

morgwn, I hear ya. It is frustrating to know you've gained more length than what your hair shows due to the curls and wurls. I don't have anything else to add because my hair isn't all that long yet, but still...*comfort*...I understand.

I understand and emphasize completely on the curly hair seeming to never get longer. Mine is right at BSL wet and barely shoulder length dry. But, and maybe this was a one time thing, I rinsed my hair in a rosemary "tea" rinse a few days ago and it stayed straight enough after it dried that I've had everyone I know thats seen it asking when it got so long.

I don't know why the rosemary straightened it, I don't know if it will happen again either. But its shiny, heavy, and has gentle waves vs the tight curls I usually have. My hair is really fine, maybe the tea gave it enough weight to pull it straight, but it was a shock no matter how it happened! :)

that's great Karmal!
everytime i've used rosemary tea, it's given me dry hair with curls much much tighter than my own 3B hair..... isn't that amazing how our hair reacts differently to the same methods/products? !

I like having thicker hair with lots of volume. I put in some hair product with my hair upside down. I leave it for a while & then when it's almost dry & starts to get crispy, I flip my hair over & scrunch out the product. My problem is that I want to a find a product that makes my hair crispy so I can scrunch it out but I've been testing all these products & it just makes my hair soft & limp. Meh!

Just a thought but how much product are you using? Sometimes if I dont use enough I dont get any crunch, or if I use a heavy leave in under the gel I dont get any. I usually up my gel by quarter size amounts until I find the perfect amount for each gel.

I am with you though, I know if I got a little crunch to scrunch out Im going to have alot better hair day. My curls are more defined and less poufy.

Soleluna, I vote for 2a/2b, I think it is more than just 2a.

I just wanted to pop in and say hi! I've not been on the forum since before it went down so nice to see how everyone is doing. My hair's not grown any longer - in fact it's actually slightly shorter due to a trim. It never grows - ho hum! Still, I'm hoping just to enjoy my hair and enjoy watching everyone else's journeys too.

Kerry xxHey! How are you? Check in more often, I've missed you!

It's okay! Everyone here knows how you feel I would wager!!!! I think the length where I was BSL straight and shoulder curly was the hardest time. It really did seem to take forever. BUT remember this, if you give up and cut then you will NEVER have long curls right? I tried to keep remembering that and wearing it up and doing special things to baby it really helped me get through. Take pics and we'll tell you how much it's grown too okay? It will be worth the wait!!!

morgwyn, this is really an individual thing and varies wildly upon your individual pattern, heaviness, etc. but it seems to me like a possibility that you may be within inches of the spot where gravity starts to win over curl pattern. For me it's somewhere between 27" and 30" or so, I'm not sure exactly where. I guess I will find out in the next few months. I have very mixed feelings about this. I like the curl but I like it looking longer too.

Eventually, weight usually seems to pull out some wave/curl, so less shrinkage.

I like the look though really and it DOES appear a little longer come to think of it with it stretched a bit. Mine is 30 inches and it has happened it seemed like all at once but gradually between those lengths. 3a is always straighter on top though so I have been used to that. I like it because my bangs don't go wonky, they stay like I dry them unless they get damp or something.

Anyone here use Biolage rock hard gelee? I bought some today. I need something with a little more crunch to scrunch out. I found it at the grocery store of all places. Never seen it before but had heard raves about it. Any idea how much to use for me and do I use it like gel?

I stocked up on a bunch of the old formula Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. I don't like to use it as my main styling aid, but, in high humidity especially, I put a small amount-maybe dime size-on top of whatever styling product I'm using. This is the only gel that holds up to all the elements for me. I don't seem to get as much crunch as everyone else, but what I end up with scrunches out easily. I holds wonderfully, but I'm still trying to create my own homemade concoction for when I run out!

I use WAY more than that with most gels. Do you need less of this one for some reason? Or do you just use less of all of them normally for you hairtype/length?

I have not used the BRHG personally, but I would speculate that those for whom it is more crunchy are using closer to their usual gel amount than the dime size that curly girl fla describes.

Oh, I use a lesser hold gel or cream underneath, and much more of it! That's why I said I don't use it as my main styler, just sort of a strong-hold finish. I find that if I use it alone, I get less clumping (I like clumps!), and slightly stringier hair...not really bad, but not as good as with something else under it. With just a small amount, for me anyway, it sort of seems to seal the individual curls/clumps, helps them set when I diffuse, or even if I attempt to air dry. Sorry I wasn't too clear before.

I always leave in some of my normal rinse out conditioner. If I am not too lazy I may add a couple drops of oil too, but not much if I am wearing it down.

The Biotera is made by a company called Naturelle, and it is at Sally's. I think maybe it is a knockoff of Matrix Biolage, or something. They have other products too in this line which I have not tried yet, but I have had my eye on the Conditioning Balm. The gel is just called Firm Hold Gel, they have a couple other hold products like Glaze but I think the Firm Hold Gel is the only gel they have.

It ain't all natural by any means, it has preservatives and stuff. But it is within the Curly Girl constraints if that makes a difference. It is pretty glycerin heavy, so I'm not sure I would recommend it in very humid conditions. But if it gets back to medium humidity, it is the best thing I think I have found in terms of lightness to hold ratio. And it's cheap. But, for very humid conditions the BRHG might be more what you're after.

In some ways I'm lucky to be here in Seattle where, while it's quite humid, the dew point just about always stays low so the humidity doesn't "hang" for weeks like it does some places. It just reaches a certain critical mass and then rains, lol.

Misty, the things I have found that cause my hair to be dry are:

Not enough leave-in
Not detangling at least once every other day
Not misting with conditioner especially the ends EVERY day and then usually applying a bit of coconut oil while damp
Buildup
Too much shampoo (now CWCing with diluted shampoo only once a week, can't BELIEVE how much this has helped!)
Wearing my hair down too much
Too much benign neglect

Just thought something might strike a chord. I was having that problem for a while. Anyone think of anything else?

Yeah I was having build up issues and I pretty much cut everything out and basically went back to S&C. That worked great for a while but I think I just went to far the other way. I have been doing more CO washes and started back on some deep oil treatments. I cant believe I even stopped misting and my hair loves that. I think I figured out what was building up on my hair so I might not have that problem again....maybe. I guess the to much benign neglect was my problem

Deep oil treatments don't help my hair with dryness at all. Moisture with oil over it DOES help a lot. Do you do moisture treatments and use a leave-in conditioner? Maybe you aren't using the right one for your hair? I only mist the ends of my hair or just very lightly the length to sort of perk or align the curls up. I found I can't mist heavy all up the length, causes frizz.

missy60

I always put conditioner on then apply oil over that. I cut out the leave in because my hair had been getting just over conditioned, but like I said I went to far the other way. I started back with a leave in and decided to get a light one by Biotera, but that was just use less. So Im back to CO thinking I will probally have to do an occasional CWC. I have been using my heavier leave ins and oil. The dryness is improving some now I just dont want to go to far the other way again and get over conditioned. I think I know now what was causing the problem though so maybe it wont happen again.

I've always been the same, and oil on dry hair just gives me dry, oily hair which is not the same as moisturized hair. I wonder if this is a wurly/curly thing? Perhaps a poll is in order.

Missy, maybe this is just me but I always could fix overconditioning immediately with just a vinegar rinse. So it's preferable to me than drying it out which can take a long time to recover from. But like everything with hair, YMMV.

I did try the vinegar rinse when I was having the dirtly looking build up hair. I went to CWC first but the ends just looked dirty so I went back to S&C and dropped the leave in. My hair really liked that routine for a while. I guess I got lazy during that time and didnt mist or do any deep treatments. It seems as soon as the hot weather set in the dryness took over my hair just all at once. I have went back to CO and using a heavier leave in my hair is doing better sort of now. It does seem sort of dry a little bit now but hopefully it will respond soon to all the moisture.

And thank you Siava, Karmal, Curlsgirl and Riot Crrl for your encouragement and tips. Don't worry, I have NOT been even thinking about cutting it short (and wouldn't ever again). I am somewhat encouraged to know that longer wurly/curly hair changes a bit from when it's shorter. so sorry Curlsgirl to hear you're not feeling well. wish you fast recovery :)
a quick question for my fellow curlies: i assume most of you detangle (fingercomb or comb) after each shower. if you do detangle everyday, have you ever counted the shed hair. i'm asking because now with the heat my hair is always half up and so all the shedding happens when i'm detangling after the morning shower. i've noticed a much lower shed rate with my current wash methods but some days like yesterday it was again higher about 60 perhaps because i put coconut oil at night on my hair and fingercombed to make sure all strands are nourished with the oil. and then i started thinking maybe it seemd higher to me because normally one would lose that much hair during the day if the hair is down.
i'd love to know everyone's shed rate if you'd care to share. thanks!

Big difference.I was shedding a lot more when I was combing my hair when wet. I have started doing it gently every other day with my wood comb dry and lose quite a bit less I think. I don't comb at all really when wet anymore. I detangle right before I CWC which is once a week too usually. I sometimes wear my hair down the first day I CWC or second and then I detangle with my wood comb until I wash again. After I CWC I just gently finger comb a bit to arrange my hair. I found mermaid soaking and not washing my hair upside down helps to not have so many tangles. Am I making sense? I am still on a lot of medicine :poot:

Could you help me with hair typing? Is a 2a/2b right? THANKS!!

These are my pictures from today. Since it's warmer my hair air dries faster and in summer is curlier. Plus, I started using camelia oil.

This is the description of Fia's system:

1) The straight ones
1a - stick straight
1b - straight but with a slight body wave, just enough to add some volume, doesn't look wavy
1c - straight with body wave and one or two visible S-waves (e.g. nape of neck or temples)

2) The wavy ones
2a - loose, stretched out S-waves throughout the hair
2b - shorter, more distinct S-waves (similar to waves from braiding damp hair)
2c - distinct S-waves and the odd spiral curl forming here and there

3) The curly ones
3a - big, loose spiral curls
3b - bouncy ringlets
3c - tight corkscrews

4) The really curly ones
4a - tightly coiled S-curls
4b - tightly coiled hair bending in sharp angles (Z-pattern)

Based on this and your photo's I'd classify you as a 2b. You have shorter, more distinct S-waves, similar to waves from braiding damp hair. I do not see any spirals, so that would rule out 2c (unless they do not show on the pics you posted). I think you have more waves than a type 2a would.

hi Girlcat
hugs to you...don't give up :)
yes, i've used that many years ago and though it's not particularly on my disasterous products list, it is quite sticky ....it didn't give me either much moisture or hold.

Thanks Swan. My hair is drying with it in it right now. I will report back.

This is the description of Fia's system:

Based on this and your photo's I'd classify you as a 2b. You have shorter, more distinct S-waves, similar to waves from braiding damp hair. I do not see any spirals, so that would rule out 2c (unless they do not show on the pics you posted). I think you have more waves than a type 2a would.

HTH

btw, another wurly here !!

Thanks! I actually have some spirals. at the nape of my neck and in the under layers. I've always wondered why the 'deeper' layer is so spirally compared to the top layers-

My sister has a head full of curls, BTW, even if my mom is stick straight. I guess it runs in the family. My dad has short hair and I've never seen him grow it. I don't think he ever did.

I am having a lot of brain fog right now. I can't sleep because I am on prednisone right now. I found out today I have pneumonia, first time ever. I thought it was a chest cold or something. :(

Oh my, that's no fun. Get well, and feel better soon!

Thanks Niphredil for posting the description of Fia's hair typing system. According to the descriptions, I guess I am probably 2c rather than 2c/3a. I think. :ponder:

I'm gonna give the Potion 9 a thumbs up.
My results were better than when I used Re:coil, even.
I got nice spirally 3a ringlets instead of the usual frizz-fest mess .
Now I just need thicker hair.
Too bad I took an inch off my hair before I washed it. Well, it really was damaged anyway.
I think part of my problem is I don't like product, and don't apply enough of it when I do use it.
I was fairly liberal with the Potion 9, aplying it almost to the roots on dripping wet hair.

Swan--I didn't find it sticky or crunchy.

I really think length can and does pull out curl. I have never had hair so long as you LFL, but I have had it only a few inches shorter. (It's currently a foot or more shorter at only BSL or a little longer.) It just gets heavy and gravity happens.

Yep. :(

Unfortunately for me, gravity likes to mess with me, I have times when the bottom half of my hair is insanely curly, and the top half barely even looks wavy.

morgwn, I hear ya. It is frustrating to know you've gained more length than what your hair shows due to the curls and wurls. I don't have anything else to add because my hair isn't all that long yet, but still...*comfort*...I understand.

:(

It sure is frustrating. Until just the other day, I felt like the mirror wasn't showing any growth for the past six months or so, but I know it has grown...

ETA: I'm sure you lovely ladies have said something else I want to read lately, but I somehow missed the last 6 or 7 pages of the thread, I'll have to catch back up, lol

Has anybody used Potion 9 by Sebastion? I am at my wit's end with my hair, and decided to buy it despite some scary sounding ingredients.

I am trying something completely new to me. I am not combing at all or brushing. I'm only finger combing. I will run a comb through it before shampooing but thats it.

I'm hoping to embrace and reclaim my curls!

Kittee: congratulations! :)

I have one additional suggestion. I would have personally never thought this would work until I tried it, and I would have thought anyone suggesting it was nuts. But I found it effective and resulting in less sheds and breakage. YMMV but it could be worth a try.

Don't comb it at all until you have rinsed it so it's all vertical and put conditioner in it. Only use your fingers or a real big wide tooth comb.

Curlsgirl, the L'Occitane mask is a wash-out intentive treatment that's kind of like a thick conditioner in consistency. You just dampen your hair and leave the product in for five or ten mins (I tend to put it in when I get in the shower and then wash it out once I've finished washing the rest of me and shaving my legs).

Does anyone own a hairsense (http://stores.ebay.com/Salon-Accessories-Inc_hand-made-combs_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ2QQftidZ2QQtZkm) comb? I broke my MP rake comb last week and I am looking for a replacement. The problem is that I want about 4 of them, but I want to limit myself to only two. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's funny how things that are life-savers for others actually make my problems worse.

Finger combing was disastrous for me; I could never get it detangled enough, and I ended up destroying my ends to the point where I had to get them trimmed. (Maybe I was doing it wrong?).

People recommend putting your hair up to protect it, but after two weeks of buns and braids, I'm noticing a ton of hairs that are way shorter than they should be (not so coincidentally, they end right about where my braid or ponytail began).

I know exactly what you mean. I absolutely hate ponytails, they destroy my hair, and if I don't make the braid extremely loose, it usually hurts my hair a tiny bit, but nothing like a ponytail.

I've been forgetting to oil my hair a lot lately, and I've been wearing a few ponytails, and fingercombing (which always makes the bottom of my hair unhappy) so my hair is destroyed right now.

I have to be careful with updos too because they can cause more harm than good. For the most part, I use a loose bun done with satin scrunchies, unless circumstances (like being in a military uniform) require something different. Just enough to keep the ends in, but not so much that the turning of the hair style works against the natural turns in the hair strands. Some of the fancier intricate styles just seem better suited to those with straighter individual hairs without bends or turns.

I don't finger comb that often because a wide tooth is easier for me. Less catching.

I don't own one, but the super wide tooth looks interesting in its novelty. The standard one and the plam one looke neat too.

I don't fingercomb at all anymore either except when I get out of the shower and flip my hair back over to arrange it a little so it's not "caught" in the other strands and interrupting the curl. I use my cheap Body shop comb and LOVE it even more than my MP Rake and HH horn comb. It just seems to break my hair less and be gentler. I love it.

Kittee, I thought this would drive me nuts, too. It really works and I'm shedding tons less! It took about a week to get accustomed to it though. It's not snarled or tangled like I thought it would be and the curls stay intact longer. I hope you find that it works for you as well.

Wow, I guess I'm the oddball here. I LOVE fingercombing. It leaves my curls curly and I don't have a problem with detangling it as long as it was in a braid or bun all day.

Posting a pic of my Potion 9 hair. I slept on this hair, and worked an 11 hour day today, and the curls are still going strong(rare for me). I am very excited about this, but you know how that goes; next week I may hate Potion 9!
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/potion9.jpg

These curls are way better than I had been getting(though not as thick and healthy as the rest of you lucky gals!), and I was seriously considering cutting to neck length, it was so ratty.
So I trimmed an inch instead.

Thanks, Curlsgirl!
The hair that is growing in at the bottom back of my head is at 16"(stretched), and the rest at 21.5" (not stretched). Quite a difference. Someday these two layers are going to have to meet, and it was almost yesterday! I am really trying to hold out until the shorter layer is nearly BSL. 18-24 months from now, I think.

I can't see the picture .... waaaaaaaah! Honestly Girlcat, if I hadn't seen the monistat pictures, I would not have known you had layers were so short ie when you lost hair because of radiotherapy. I've got shorter layers as well. I call them do it yourself layers when your hair breaks off when damaged. I think you should keep on growing your hair and keep on trimming your layers as you have been doing. I think I'm going to grow my hair until BSL curly or BSL waist & continue to trim.
