View Full Version : Hair stick dumb
Blueneko March 9th, 2008, 05:59 PM I am hair stick dumb. I admit it. I am braid, bun and updo dumb as well. My hair is too thick to twist into anything clever. I just get this big fat roll that won't do anything.
So, help? I am assuming this is 100% user error, so, any clever hair stick advice?
ReadingRenee March 9th, 2008, 06:03 PM I JUST now got the hang of using a hairstick. ironically while LHC was down. I went to Madeleines Twisted Pages and she has a little tutorial on using hairsticks for a bun or a french twist and that helped.
Im sure someone will come along soon who can give you actual good advice. :)
sapphire-o March 9th, 2008, 06:06 PM Can you do a half-up bun? Hopefully half of your hair wouldn't be as thick and you can make it into some interesting styles? When I first joined LHC I used to wear two buns because just one was difficult.
Cricket March 9th, 2008, 06:07 PM I seem to remember one of the girls on the old board dividing her thick hair into two sections, side by side or one over the other, and then bunning each of those separately. If you wrapped the last section of the second piece around the first piece, you may be able to fool everyone into thinking that its one bun.
I found it easier to learn on smaller sections of my hair before trying the whole thing. I had to wait until I had 3-4 more inches to try any updo instructions that what people have listed for minimum length. Not sure why... perhaps I have a 3-4 inch learning curve?
manderly March 9th, 2008, 06:09 PM Have you tried a Peacock twist with a stick? Works quite well with thick hair.
Simply create the twist, hold it against your head, stab through the exterior bit of it, then poke that edge back down to your scalp, push it through it the opposite direction you started in. This causes the stick to actually go completely around the fat clump of hair and snares it to the hair against your head.
Blueneko March 9th, 2008, 06:10 PM Ok, we have progress! I did the half up and the stick worked perfectly. Then I tried to wrap the bottom up in it and let me tell you, my hair was not fooled! It twisted out and flopped onto my back. I need more length to counter the thickness.
But half up is working. Thank you! Problem solved. :)
snowbear March 9th, 2008, 06:19 PM As someone with überthick hair, I've found practice helps the most. Also, if your hair is thick, it may take time before you can do styles that people with thinner hair can do at your length.

Alas it's true. My hair is right at 29 inches and about 4.5+ inches pony circumference and I am just now able to do a nice figure 8 and infinity. It's seemed to take FOREVER to do the things others could do at much shorter lengths. Good thing about it is we have nice fat buns and braids! I also found with the sticks that I had periods of where my hair was where the ends of my hair hit just right to do certain styles and then they would quit working as they hit other lengths. It really took practice with me to get the sticks/forks down good and I still struggle at times to get it just right depending on what kind of mood my hair is in that day!

I second that. I didn't even "discover" sticks until I was at about 24-25". Since then I've occassionally been able to do the figure 8. The chinese bun has to be reworked every so often as I gain inches.
Until 24" I lived in giant claw clips.
tiny_teesha March 9th, 2008, 08:12 PM thick hair is a blessing not a curse!!! i wish my hair was thick!!

The grass is always greener on the other side. I'm just now beginning to appreciate the thickness of my hair, because I saw people with shorter hair than me doing figure-8s and I couldn't even do a simple cinnabun that looked decent!

oooOOOo Umlaut. I am impressed :D
If you can get a half up, maybe you can try this style (http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/eowyn-updo/)? It essentially splits the hair in half.

And it's all thanks to the copy/paste feature! I have no idea what keyboard shortcuts make the umlaut, so I just wiki "über".
jojo March 10th, 2008, 03:05 PM a braided bun hold well with a stick, however because your hair is so thick (lucky you!) it may need to grow a tad more before this is achievable.
Blueneko March 10th, 2008, 04:17 PM Thanks for the advice. The sectioning has worked well.
I seriously thought I was a complete idiot when I would twist then have this big lump that would not do anything. I always wanted to tie my hair in a knot how my high school buddy used to do, but alas, her hair was baby fine and silky, while mine is a mop of thick goodness.
Who knew?! I don't feel like such a dork now. :)

I wasn't able to tie mine into a knot until it was past waist. You'll probably get there sooner, though. I'm a iii.

hey forgot to ask, do you still use molasses in your hair? it was you i think:confused:
Blueneko March 10th, 2008, 05:13 PM It was me! And I still do. About once a month I do a 1 hour soak.
:)
pariate April 8th, 2008, 03:23 AM I've seen straight hair sticks and twisty ones (http://www.longhairloom.com/stickshome.html#A). Can anyone tell me if the different stick style makes any difference to how one uses them? Is one style better for particular hair types?
TIA!
Shanarana April 8th, 2008, 06:15 AM Have you tried a sock bun? I'm guessing though if your hair is so thick it would be huge.
Calista April 8th, 2008, 06:27 AM Blueneko, I am a little late in the day with my answer, but - try forks instead of sticks! They are much easier to use at shorter lengths. In fact, I still prefer a fork over sticks any day.
