Why is it, that everything that is supposed to be good for my hair leaves it NASTY. I've been trying with coconut oil and AVG to add moisture to my hair, but each day it gets drier and more brillowy!

I've switched between the two to see which one it is, its both! Both leave my hair after washing LESS moisturized than before!

Anyone else have this problem?

what is avg? I was told by another member that some people's hair does not like the added oils. over time if it is not all rinsed out it can get gunked up so you may want to try clarifying to get it all out and try your routine without the oils and see if your hair is better

AVG = Aloe Vera Gel

I do clarify, only after i do that to get it all out, and moisture moisture with a conditioner its better..... if i add coconut oil again, or aloe vera, it goes mental again!

Sometimes, it isn't the actual product but how you are applying it. You may need to vary the amount or whether you apply it on wet or dry hair, among other things. For example, my hair doesn't like aloe vera gel alone but prefers to have it mixed with a little bit of oil. I can only apply coconut oil or aloe vera gel on wet hair.

Also, make sure you are using pure versions of either product. I know members have had trouble with the "green" varieties of aloe vera gel or coconut oil mixtures that have waxes or other additives.

Switching between the two and getting the same result doesn't necessarily mean that your hair dislikes both of them. You may want to get your hair to its "original" state before trying something new. Return your hair to its normal moisture levels, then try aloe vera gel in different ways over a period of a couple of weeks or so, each time returning to "normal" before trying it a different way. Each time, take notes about what you tried and what the results were. Then, you can do the same with coconut oil. It is time consuming, but it really lets you know what works for your hair.

I was never able to get coconut to work for my hair until I discontinued silicones and tried to do a heavy oiling repeatedly over the course of a few days. My hair loves coconut oil now!

I don't know why exactly, but my hair didn't respond well to oil at first either. I think that part of the reason was that my ends were so damaged from flat ironing that it was impossible for them to absorb oil. After I cut those ends off, oiling went better. Also, I think that very possibly my hair had such a heavy coating of cone products that it took several months of using no cones before the coating was entirely gone. Now my hair drinks oil right up and asks for more.

If you need moisture but your hair hates added oils and becomes drier when using them, I understand. I've had some similar problems and use Nexxus Keraphix conditioner. It's cone free so there's no buildup, and it's now available in most drugstores, like CVS. Target carries it as well.

Hope this helps.

Oil destroys my hair too - if I use it on dry hair. I apply it on wet hair.

I also had problems with everything I tried after I went cone free. Even with clarifying it took a few weeks for all the cone build-up to be gone..

I agree that you have to try different combinations and techniques before you completely write off something.. however if it does end up hating coconut oil or aloe vera in every form, that's fine - there are plenty of other things to try!

I've tried coconut oil in all possible ways - pre-wash, deep oiling, leave-in and every time it was sooo drying, made my hair static and looking like straw. I've learnt from some more experienced members than me that some hair just don't like oils. If I were you I'd stop using it and try something else which could moisturize your hair:)

My hair loves coconut oil but HATES aloe vera gel. AVG gives me this enormous puffy pile of frizz. Not attractive. :silly: Different things work for different people, that's all.

I'm only happy with oils when I apply them heavily, leave overnight and wash the next day. Coconut oil is just ok for me. I don't care for aloe gel at all.

I gave a lot of the natural things a shot and I'm finding that I am happier with the silicone and chemical laden products you find everywhere. Some hair just doesn't like the things that others find to be good.

Have you tried Camellia oil? I went thru my time of testing every oil I could get my hands on. Coconut was the worst for me, olive oil so/so, sweet almond ok, grapeseed ok. But Camellia is heaven. No crunch, it's like a dry oil that sucks right in and really doesnt leave any residue when used moderately. When used heavily it still is much less heavy than some others.
Good luck!

Does your conditioner have silicone? That might have to be clarified off before it would soak up any oil.

My hair dislikes coconut oil and aloe vera gel too. I don't have problems with other oils, but coconut oil doesn't work very well for me. Aloe vera gel makes it crunchy and gross!

I absolutely loved coconut oil...Until I tried jojoba; now I really, really love jojoba oil...I have almost classic length hair, and I only use about the size of a dime from ears down after I wash...I can't use AVG AT ALL!! That stuff leaves my hair a gunky, flaky mess!

The key, is to only us a tiny bit, because you really don't need more than that...Kirin, if you update your profile w/your hair type, we might be able to help more. :flower:

Haha, well, I guess that's two less things you ever have to buy. I discovered a strange thing lately. Usually AVG works just fine for me, EXCEPT when I've used a coney conditioner, then my hair tangles and knots so bad that I'd almost rather shave it off than untangle.
