I would never have dyed my hair chemically when pregnant, but then I wouldn't have dyed my hair chemically in any case...

But how about henna, indigo, amla, cassia - is it ok to use this when pregnant?

I know that one should be careful with certain essential oils for instance - that's why I ask.

I don't have firsthand experience, but I have heard from many people that henna is safe for pregnancy. In some cultures women actually get henna tattoos on their belly:

"For thousands of years, women in Egypt, India, and much of the Middle East have brought 'good luck' to their pregnancies by applying beautiful designs of henna on their pregnant bellies in the third trimester. Legends say henna will bring safety in childbirth and a happy baby."

How interesting! Perhaps that is what I should do then :-)

Hi Hayat! Congrats!!! I'm actually 39 weeks, and I've used henna and indigo at least 3 times during my pregnancy. I was concerned about it at first too, so I asked my doctor and she told me it was perfectly fine as long as I was using the kind without chemicals. I was a little surprised she even knew the difference:). Anyway, you might want to just check with your doc, but mine said it was perfectly fine. HTH:flower:.

I searched information about indigo during my pregnancy with poor success. It seems that there are not enough studies in this respect and because of that it is recommended to avoid it during pregnancy.

Oh Hayat! I meant to add this link too - this is where I purchase my henna and indigo. http://www.hennaforhair.com/forum/index.php?module=phpwsbb&PHPWSBB_MAN_OP=view&PHPWS_MAN_ITEMS=741

Congrats yourself! :) I'm only 11 weeks, so I still have some way to go. The baby is not due until mid November :)

I also get my stuff from Catherine at the site you are linking to, so I know it's good stuff. I did not even think about this until now, so I actually hennaed my hair about a month and a half ago...

What made me think of it was a thread on a pregnancy forum, where a pregnant woman asked if it was safe and ok to dye her hair chemically while pregnant. I could not believe she was even thinking about doing this, but then I started thinking about myself and my hennadigoing...

I was actually quite surprised though, that the above mentioned woman got an answer from a hairdresser telling her that there was no concern whatsoever with dying hair chemically when pregnant, and she said that this would be totally safe.

I could not help telling my opinion about this... and I'll probably be banned from this forum now...

...but then I'm quite against chemical dying no matter if pregnant or not, though - I've seen how it ruined my own hair.

Henna is the thing!! :hollie:

By the way - in the thread you are linking to, Catherine herself says that she has never heard of any problems hennaing hair when pregnant. I think I'll just trust her, that woman knows henna for sure!

You know, it's odd but a lot of stylists advise their clients that chemicals are perfectly ok when pregnant. I suppose it's only because there is apparently not enough research to tell people otherwise. In fact, I asked my doctor about this and she said the same thing. She said that she tells she patients that she can't stop them if they want to dye their hair or do a chemical treatment, and that she can't tell them that it is terrible for their unborn child, nor can she tell them that it's ok for their unborn child - it's just a choice they have to make. With henna though, she was pretty straight forward and said the kind without chems was fine.

Oh, and I ruined my hair with chemical dyes too, in fact I had to cut it all off in 2003 because of a horrific dye job. I think henna is the way as well, and I have had nothing but a good experience since using Catherine's henna. I know some people feel it's a bit expensive, and I suppose it is, but I don't lost sleep at night worrying about whether or not her product will ruin my hair - and that to me is worth a little added expense:agree:.
