Does anyone have a fix for yellowing grey hair? I think mine is due to smoking (nicotine stains?). I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanx!

There is a quick one: stop smoking ;)

As for getting the stain out of the hair.. I wish I knew.. even harsh shampoos didn't get it out of a client of mine's hair. :(

Nicotine causes grey hair? Or am I misunderstanding totally your question here? (Due to language barrieres - I'm not a native english/american).

I understood you have some grey hair, and you want to dye it yellow. I dye my BF's hair with cassia - it takes away most of the grey and dyes it yellowish/golden.

Hayat - I have grey hair which should be silver. Instead it's turning yellow and I want my silver back!

There are different "blue-ing" shampoos and rinses, intended to brighten up grey/white hair. I think this would be what you are looking for.

Ok. Thank you for explaining. It turned out I misunderstood you, then. :) Silver hair is beautiful. I hope someone can help you find a method of getting the yellow/greyish out!:)

Here's what I have found:

"Use an infusion of hollyhock (blue-purple flowers) to remove the yellow cast from grey hair OR Use betony as a rinse to cover yellow in grey hair."

Hope this helps!

there are a lot of shampoos that are apropriat for silver hair...normally blue shampoos. Blondes also use it although they are specific to silver hair to take out that yellow colour from the white. Those shampoos are normally used as a treatment so you have to let it be in your hair for about 15 minutes. then do your normal rotine. You could try also the Redken treatment Pure Pearl it is for blondes but it takes away that yellow...you could ask at a hairdresser if it works on silver hair. I know it did a bit of diference on mine to take away brasiness. Hope this helps...

Citric acid as a rinse keeps my silvers very shiny.

I CO wash and I am growing my gray in. I've noticed that it yellows -- I figured it was my water and/or styling products that I use. I use Silver Fox conditioner or Aveda Blue Malva conditioner. I find that both of these are drying and have no detangling benefits for my curly hair, so I use my leave-in before I try to detangle. I use these for one CO wash approx. every other week and they seem to work for me. Another line that I am checking into but have not purchased yet is Davines.

Also, if you use a vinegar rinse, try white vinegar instead of ACV. The ACV was giving my silvers a brassy cast. HTH!

My father with all white hair swears by a once a week baby shampoo wash. I'm not sure if that works, but i've seen his hair get a yellow cast then go to brilliant white again.

Perhaps a honey/conditioner soak would also help pull out the yellow? These are just good guesses on things to try.

Perhaps the sun is adding to the yellowish tint. I know my ends get tinted by sun exposure, more of a reddish color though.

How to get it out? Don't have any suggestions, but as TammySue mentioned, white vinegar is better for us silver hairs instead of ACV (in case you're using a vinegar rinse.)

I'm very sure that it's nicotine. Prior to coloring my hair I was a non-smoker and yellowing wasn't an issue for me. Also, a friend in the clinic, where I've been the last 10 weeks, used her flat iron to straighten my hair just for fun (I mean, my hair is still really short and I wouldn't do this otherwise) and the yellowing was really noticeable afterwards. I wonder if it was the heat as well. It seems better or at least less noticeable now that's I've washed it and the curls are back.
I've already tried baking soda in my shampoo in the clinic and that didn't do much. Yesterday I bought a bottle of shampoo for greying hair - specifically against yellowing - and will try that first. If that doesn't help, then I'll try the citric acid trick - it's been so long since I've done that - and see how that works. I recall that working real wonders for my hair much better than ACV. And, yeah, I'll keep white vinegar in mind as a last resort. I don't really care for the smell.
Thanx for all the ideas, ladies!
