View Full Version : Coconut oil - should it be solid?
Hayat April 18th, 2008, 05:16 AM Hello! :)
I've been reading through the different coconut threads, and decided to give it a try. There are just SO many things I want to try, but it's just so difficult to get hold of a lot of needed stuff here in Norway. However, Extra virgin coconut oil is to be found in any health food store (at the price of $32!!! for a jar). It is solid though. White and solid. Is yours too? I was thinking of using it as a pre-wash treatment, how do you cope with it if it's solid? Just melt a little in your hands or what?
Hayat :)
Miss Murphy April 18th, 2008, 05:23 AM It is solid at room temperature. I just swirl with my fingers a bit, on contact it dissolves. Or I scrape a bit out, and melt that in my palm.
Hayat April 18th, 2008, 05:33 AM Thank you! :-)
harley mama April 18th, 2008, 08:13 AM Mine is semi solid. I mix some jojoba and EO's with it. I put a glob in my palm and rub like I am applying lotion to my hands. Then, I just run my hands through my hair. I end up with oiled hair and soft hands and both smell yummy.
eadwine April 18th, 2008, 08:50 AM I just take out a table spoon of the stuff and then rub portions between my palms and apply it to my hair.
However I cannot wash my hands soon enough after applying the oil in such amounts *giggles*
lora410 April 18th, 2008, 08:53 AM Yup mines semi-solid and it will liquefy in heat but then once it cools get semi-solid again. be careful to much more then a drop (depending on the length of your hair) will make it greasy. And btw 32$ is INSANE. I paid 10$ at walmart for extra virgin coconut oil.

Lora - don't forget that a) the dollar is very low at the moment b) there's no Walmart in Norway and c) the price level (but the income level, too) is higher in Norway than in the US.
khyricat April 18th, 2008, 09:05 AM depends on the temp, it can be solid or semi solid... but when I put it on my hand it melts fast..
Medvssa April 18th, 2008, 09:26 AM I use cooking coconut oil, first because it is readily available in the eastern grocery and very cheap (I think less than 2 euros for a half a liter pot) and second because I don't like the scent of coconut so much. And well, it works great!
Here (Belgium) it is solid in winter and in the warmer days of summer it melts. It melts at about body temperature so it will melt in your hands.
Tapioca April 18th, 2008, 09:59 AM My coconut oil is either solid or liqiud depending on the teperature of my bathroom. Lately it's been liquid. If it's solid, it'll melt with body heat as soon as you touch it.
lilalong April 19th, 2008, 05:06 PM 32 euro? I paid 90 cents for a cube of 100 g here in Germany.
Did you check the supermarket? I found mine right next to the butter, because it was sold as frying oil/ cooking fat. Do you have Palmin in Norway?

You are very right about this. The norwegian price for the jar was NOK 160, and the dollar is as low as 1$ = 5 NOK. (Some years ago it was 1$ = 7,5 NOK). Also, the price and income level in Norway is a lot higher - but still... $32 is quite a bit, isn't it...? :undecided

It wasn't 32 €, it was 32$ :)
We do not have Palmin in Norway. What is it?
I guess I will check the biggest grocery stores, and also the eastern store. Maybe they have some. Otherwise I'll just get the expensive one from the health food store.

That does still seem pretty high to me (I also paid about us$10 for mine)ETA: I'm not sure about the availability of coconut oil in Norway, though. Might make a difference.

florenonite May 6th, 2008, 06:58 AM I paid 20 pounds for a 16 oz jar, but I went to another place where I found it for ten, which is where I'll get it next time.
