View Full Version : Is this Good Henna?
ladystar April 15th, 2008, 12:53 PM Ok, I have been looking for henna every were. I finally found it at a beauty supply place because the shipping online were I have found it is too much money. I found this one. Does anyone know anything about it? Its called Colora henna powder
http://www.rubber-ducky.com/colora-henna-hair-dye-natural.html
Ingredients: Henna may also contain indigo, Centaurea, Rhubarb, lichen, Litmus.
mellie April 15th, 2008, 02:41 PM Sorry, I have no experience with that brand! Your hair is beautiful though!!! :-)
Kirin April 15th, 2008, 02:43 PM this is not a very good quality henna. As you see by the ingredients it "may" contain other colorants. Yes natural, but its not pure henna. Also, the age of the product is in question..... which could cause poor dye uptake (causing orange!) or none at all.

ITA. I don't trust anything that comes in different colors, but I'm kind of picky like that.
ladystar April 15th, 2008, 03:10 PM hmmm. I will test strand first. I dont want to mess up my hair.
ladystar April 15th, 2008, 03:14 PM Thank you Mellie
Velouria April 15th, 2008, 03:58 PM Hope you didn't already order.....Colora is a lot cheaper here..... http://www.discountbeauty.com/Hair-Products/Henna-Hair-Color/
My mom uses it; she doesn't want straight red and can't be convinced to mix her own colors with the raw ingredients, despite my efforts.
It definitely isn't the best quality. It's comparable to Rainbow and Light Mtn., I'd say. But my mom's hair was chemically dyed, and using Colora has worked well for her.
Uhh...that link is not what I typed, and when I go to edit it looks like the right link again. Weird. Just go to discountbeauty.com and search the site, then.
Nightshade April 15th, 2008, 04:02 PM And I don't trust anyplace that has this to say about henna.
How long will the henna stay on my hair? Because henna does not contain chemicals it is a semi-permanent hair dye and washes away within 3 weeks. Lasts longer with 100% natural shampoo & conditioner. Repeated application over several weeks is sometimes required to get the desired result.
That either means that there is so little henna in there as not to matter, or something else in there to make the henna not stick, OR they're full of it and the color could last forever.

Good point, I didn't see that. Just the other day I noticed that LUSH says the same thing about their (aptly named?) Caca bars.
themostsilly April 15th, 2008, 05:27 PM I just ordered some colora, I tried it last night. I left it on for about 1.5 hours, but there was a very little color change. I only used half of the powder, so I am going to put the rest on tonight for a few hours. It did make it shiney and soft though. I got the Ash Brown color from Amazon, and it was only $10 including shipping, which to me was pretty cheap. I'll let you know how the second application goes. BTW this was my first time using any type of henna, and the application was pretty difficult b/c of the grittiness. I think after this I will try some real henna though, and make a recipe. But this was a good learning experience and didn't damage my hair.
ladystar April 15th, 2008, 05:33 PM Thanks themostsilly. I will do a test tonight and report back. Yes def I will try the real thing. I got the color black
ladystar April 16th, 2008, 06:57 AM I did the strand test last night, my hair came out soft but no color change and I got black.
On Friday I will be doing my whole head. Next time I plan to buy the real thing. I have a store near me that sells henna and they wrote this to me.
“Hello,
I have regular natural henna from India finely sifted at $25 a pound. Please let me know if you are interested.”
Do u think its worth buying the better one?

I always think it's worth making sure that your henna is of good quality. Perhaps you could get a small amount of this other stuff to strand test with without buying a whole bunch?
ladystar April 16th, 2008, 08:08 AM I am not sure were else I can get it that the shipping is not going to be to expensive. That's the only local store that I know that sell this =(
Ok, I found that the health food store around here has rainbow henna? Anyone know of this one?
mellie April 16th, 2008, 06:36 PM Yes, I use Rainbow henna with good results. I know a lot of folks here don't like it, but it works great for me! I get at my local herb store too since it is very affordable and so easy to get. I use the Dark brown color.
themostsilly April 16th, 2008, 07:08 PM I tried the second application of the Colora, and there was no more color change, it is really shiney though, so I guess at least it didn't damage my hair even if it did not produce the results I was hoping for. Since I have natural gold highlights in my hair it made them stand out even more and look even more golden, which isn't what I was going for since I got the ash brown color in hopes of toning down the brassiness. Oh well, I think I will be trying the rainbow brand next as well, I think I will try the dark brown, and if that is too red maybe a mix of that one and the black to get the combo of darker and more ashy color. Good luck.
mellie April 17th, 2008, 05:33 AM Rainbow Dark Brown doesn't have any red in it when I use it - here you can see my grays before and after:

I mixed as on the directions, with coffee and a little ACV and left on for an hour and a half.
ladystar April 17th, 2008, 06:58 AM Mellie it looks great. Do u think I can mix the coffe with Colora Henna also?
Themostsilly Well that's great at least you got the shine.
BTW I found a local indian store. I called them and they said they had henna from india, so I am going to go by and see it on Saturday. I will let you know what kind they had. :p
themostsilly April 19th, 2008, 10:03 AM I am not satisfyed with the results I got with the Colora, my hair is starting to look more orangey. I really want to try the Rainbow after seeing your good results Mellie but I have a couple of questions. 1)I have medium brown hair that definitely more on the red/golden side, and I want dark brown that is more ashy, should I use the Rainbow dark brown, or the black? 2) How long should I wait before applying the Rainbow since I just applied the colora a few days ago?
mellie April 19th, 2008, 10:28 AM Hi themostsilly!
I would recommend the Rainbow Dark Brown. It is pretty darn dark, and I'd think that the black will be probably be just way too dark for you.
I don't think you need to wait to use the Rainbow. It shouldn't hurt your hair. It leaves mine in really nice condition.
