It's IRC chat. If you have trillian or some other IRC provider, you can figure it out there (the channel is #LHC)

If you don't have trillian or whatever or don't feel like figuring that out, you can do this:

1) Go to http://www.dal.net/
2) Type in a 'nickname' and hit 'go'
3) wait for a whole bunch of nonsense to load up indicating that you've found a server
4) type /join #LHC

and you should be in! That's the easiest method if you don't feel like figuring something else out...

Also, FYI - the dalnet chatroom #LHC is one where you will often find LHC folks, but it is not associated with this site officially - not run by Steph, not moderated by our mods, etc. Non-LHC folk can, and sometimes do, show up.

IRC, like Usenet, is part of the old-style internet, pre-world-wide-web. Fewer controls, more free-for-all.

Use with discretion.

Yes, exactly. It is NOT part of the site. Although, FWIW, I have never seen a non LHC member in the LHC IRC chat.

I've only seen it a couple of times - usually someone who logs on with a name I don't recognize, lurks for a while without saying a thing, and logs off - not saying who it is or responding even when asked directly. (I'm not talking about logging on and immediately logging off, as an LHCer might do to see if anyone in particular is there - I'm talking 20 minutes plus.)

At that point, I figure the odds are reasonably high that is this is a person who is not an LHCer wanting to chat.

Some people's IRC clients ghost themselves onto the network when they are away from the computer. I've known this to happen a couple times...
