Please ignore awful cinnamon bun attempt, I am great at henna and hopeless at updos:

I'm far too lazy to post pics here right now, and they'd have to be scaled down. So.. go to my profile to see my (non auburn) red hair. :) I need to get new ones taken, and I intend to gradually use less and less henna with the cassia. This will take awhile.

well the first pic in my siggy was taken just after my hair dried from my very first henna treatment.. its super bright because it hadnt oxidised yet (i think thats the word im looking for) anyway if you go to the links in my siggy you can see better pictures of the color... its gotten alot darker than it was in that first pic... i have freckles and pale skin so most people think its my natural color... my natural color is auburn... it always looked brown in the winter and would get red on the canopy in the summer.. i really only leave the henna on for like an hour now... i think that it just doesnt take much to get my auburn base color kicked up to red..

I agree absolutely.....Indian or Middle Eastern grocery henna is actually "BAQ" for the most part, you just need to research the particular brands that you find to make sure they're pure. I think they're always much better sifted than the health food store brands; I know my Afshan is.

But if, like me, you have none of these stores nearby, these hennas can be ordered online cheaply, too. I get mine here http://www.halalco.com/henna.html That's the best pricing I found online, but there are also other Eastern groceries selling cheap, good henna online that have more brand variety. Just google "indian grocery henna" and they'll come up.

I used to use henna from Mehandi (and paid far too much); the henna I use now works just as well, better, actually, because it's more coppery in its results.

What do you all think about this. I have a box of Reshma Henna that I bought at my local. 4 bucks for 200 grams.

It says: Ingredient: Powdered Henna Leaves. I know that's not super reliable since it's imported from India. It also says: WARNING NOT INTENDED FOR USE ON SKIN

Well. It's going to be kind of hard if I can't get it on my scalp. I know that the FDA only approves henna for use on hair, so it may well be that this is just a bootie-covering measure to avoid import hassles.

Inside, the henna is in a clear plastic pouch. The sift and grind looks no different than a Mehandi product. It's baby-powder-fine, and free of any sticks whatsoever.

I'm not sweating this too urgently, because I still have about half a kilo of Yemen from Mehandi. I'm curious, though.

Velouria
April 13th, 2008, 06:15 PM
I considered ordering Reshma before, and researched it......it's good and pure from what I remember. I ended up getting Afshan instead only because it was even cheaper, IIRC.

I only henna my ends, i used to do it monthly but i think it was such good quality it really started to go that purple colour and make my hair a bit weird feeling- it got a lot coarser! Which is good, because they were damaged, but they weren't soft anymore, so i've stopped. I will continue with glosses. I'm trying to grow out my natural colour.

That color is the result of many full henna applications and some indigo gloss (although it's been long time since the last one and I suppose it has faded). My natural hair color is brown with 25% greys. I've always used BAQ henna (Body Art Quality) form www.mehandi.com or www.henna-boy.co.uk.

I really enjoy seeing all the beautiful henna heads too!

sonriso-It really depends on what color your hair is to start. Henna always has an orange undertone, if your natural hair is light (like mine) the orange shows up well--usually in the sun or bright light. If your natural hair is dark, it's less obvious . And the more times you henna, the darker it gets. Also, when you apply the henna to your hair, the longer you leave it on the less orange. So, say I put henna on my blond--2hrs=carrot orange, 6 hours=red-orange crayon or what I like to call it--flaming hot cheeto red.

khyricat
April 16th, 2008, 01:01 PM
if your hair is light, its very hard to avoid orange colors.. if its dark, using long applications or repeated applications will help avoid that and get the deeper burgundy reds like I and others get...

Sweetkandi, I would recommend to strand test some of the strongest/freshest henna you can find, but instead of doing it once, do long and repeated applications. Let it oxidize for a few days in between applications, so you can check the final color.

Treecrown,

My natural colou is dark-blonde to light-brown. I normally use copper-coloured henna, about one-third, mixed with golden-blonde henna, also one third, and finally one third colourless henna. The picture is taken in full sunlight, so it’s not always this light…
I use Henné Colour paris, which is a brand that you can get at every chinese or turkish shop here in the Netherlands, I don’t know if there are similar colours available where you live.

Sweetkandi, with your color it won't turn orange. That's only if you've got light blond hair, and you've got dark blondisch hair. The roots can get a bit orangy after more then a month but that's because of the grow out. The you dye it again and your dark red again on top.

I tried henna for the first time this weekend (I used the Surya product). I used to use chemical dyes, but between those and the chemical relaxers I was putting into my hair, (as well as my lack of proper maintenance) my hair was breaking off faster than it was growing.

I had a reddish brown tone to my hair with the chemical dyes though, and was looking for something safer that I could use to color my hair (it's summertime, so I really want that golden red color).

The henna I bought was "Mahogany", and when I applied it to my hair, it actually darkened it, lol. I admit that I didn't follow the color chart on the box, or I would have seen that if your hair is naturally a darker color, then you really won't see the red hue, but my question is this: Is it possible to achieve that reddish gold hue that I have in my avatar pic with henna? I mean, will it actually take the dark sections of my hair (the new growth) and make it red red? Or am I just stuck searching for a chemical dye that doesn't do as much damage as the ones I've tried in the past?

CLCNY20, henna can't lighten your hair at all. It just adds red on top of your natural color. If you have dark hair, it will maybe look red in sun.

Aw, Rustella, thanks! My recipe's a little crazy sounding, but here we go!

First, here's a photo of my starting color. Ew, mousy!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lord_powell2112/233218967/sizes/l/in/set-72157594267317883/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lord_powell2112/233218967/sizes/l/in/set-72157594267317883/)

I have some grey now, and my aim is to darken a few shades and add natural colored red highlights. I have a two step process, but I do it backwards from most people!

Day 1 I apply indigo. At first I did full head applications until I got my hair as dark as I wanted and it stayed for a whole month. That took maybe two or three tries. I mix the indigo with salt, warm water, and microwaved honey. These days, I apply it on my roots and with a damp comb I comb it down past my earlobes to feather the color down. I leave it on 30-60 minutes.

That same day, I mix up 3 different henna mixtures to use on Day 2. Again, I did full head henna applications until I got enough color, and now I do roots/combed down lower only. So I make a lot less mud than I used to.

Mix A (crown hair): 75% cassia, 25% Yemeni henna by weight.

Mix B (the middle layers): 50% cassia, 50% Yemeni henna by weight.

Mix C (the bottom layers): 25% cassia, 75% Yemeni henna by weight.

Into each bowl I pour:

the contents of one chamomile tea bag
several tablespoons microwaved honey
a couple grams of plain coconut oil
hot water as needed to make a thinnish mix like heavy cream

I blend each mix well, label and cover them for 12-24 hours.

Day 2, at night, I apply the henna mixes. I start with my crown hair, which I want to be the most golden. I apply Mix A to damp, combed hair beginning at the roots and combing it well down over top of the indigoed area. I wind that hair into a bun, secure with a hairstick, and proceed to the middle layers using Mix B. When they are coated I wind them around the bun on my crown, stick the hairstick back in, and apply Mix C to the bottom layers. At that point I wad my hair into a very secure bun on top, pierce it with a bone hairstick, and put on a bouffant type plastic cap. I clean up my skin around my hairline and then put on a winter hat and go to bed.

The next day I rinse the henna out with conditioner and give my hair a couple of days to oxidize before I use shampoo. I tend to just coat my hair with my favorite oil blend and keep it up out of the way, in the meantime.

It's a lot of work but I prefer these results!

Girltron, Ive never heard of anyone doing a two step that way. Interesting! How do you think the end result differs from doing it with henna first? Whatever youre doing, your hair is beautiful!

Girltron
April 23rd, 2008, 04:00 PM
Hey, Ohio Sky! Here's why: when you put henna on top of very dark hair, the red "sheath" catches the light and causes the hair to look lighter and reflect more red in the sun. That's what I'm going for.

When you cover it with indigo, to my eye, the henna highlights mostly go away.

I'm looking for extremely dark hair but with the maximum bright henna highlights.

I can tell what I do is getting what I want, because if I look at my hair after Step 1 it looks black. After Step 2 it's deep, dark, red-brown with rich highights.

Wow, that's a lot of work! I don't know that I could keep up with all that, especially since I'm just starting out. (Well, I haven't even taken the plunge yet but I'm working up the courage.) It doesn't look like you do different mixes for the different sections at all! I think I remember reading about your reverse two step before the boards went down, now that I think about it.

I'm nervous about trying the Indigo at all since I read that you can't die over it. I need an escape route just in case. LOL! I'll definately be keeping your recipie though as I make up my mind and grow in my henna wisdom. Thanks so much!

You all have the most amazing hair! I love henna red so much, in all of its myriad variations.

I don't have any pictures that show my henna color very accurately. They're all either too dark or too bright, because they've all been taken indoors, and my camera is horrible for indoor pictures. I need to get some pictures taken outside soon.

Here is a bright one that I took recently:

lavenderblue Your hair looks great! The more you henna the deeper the color. I am not sure if your second results are because of the different henna but of the building up with color. It gets richer and richer with time.

Hi Rustella. It's not terribly clear in photos that I do different mixes; for one thing, initially I did full-head all the same like the rest of you. So my lengths aren't extremely noticeable. But my roots growing in are what I'm concerned about, and the thing is that henna quickly begins to go plum on my hair. So the layers that are closest to my face, where the plum color wouldn't look good, I want as golden as possible. Plus my natural hair has a blond streak that wasn't noticeable until I did a french braid. This way, I still have that gold streak! You can see it slightly in the bigger version of my avatar picture.

It's subtle, but I like the effect of extra dimensions to my color, as well as the fact that it echoes the way sun bleaching effects my natural color. I also, if you notice, don't pull the indigo all the way down my hair, so that I've got a transition from dark roots to light tips, where the indigo has had the most wash-out.

All of that was meant to make my hair look as close as possible to natural. And so far, I haven't met anyone who thought it looked dyed. Everyone I tell is always surprised, then squints at my hair for awhile before they shrug! But really, there's a big difference between my natural mousy blondish brown and my current color.

khyricat
April 24th, 2008, 01:39 PM
people think mine is natural too, adn the few who know I'm grey and have colored for years asked where I was having it done because the highlights look so good... I just smiled... natural "highlights" since my greys are a different color than my darks..

Girltron, I love what you have achieved with your henna mixes! Your color is so rich. I am wondering, when you are doing the indigo, do you cover your hair and are you using heat? And when you rinse the indigo out, do you use conditioner or shampoo?

Girltron
April 25th, 2008, 07:32 AM
Thanks! I do cover my hair when I use indigo, but I never use heat. I'm not very exact about the indigo, my feeling about it is as long as it's wet it'll dye and there's no telling from one batch to the next how strong it'll be. That's why I don't really specify a dye time. I usually use conditioner to rinse out the indigo, and follow with a citric acid rinse.

The first shampoo I do after indigo/henna usually shows a reasonable amount of dye washout.

The other thing I didn't mention is that every so often, maybe every couple of months, I do a full-head cassia treatment mixed with chamomile, microwaved honey, and coconut oil. I leave it on all night like the henna. It helps correct the "plum" color more toward the natural orange-reds that I want.

I could have chosen a lower dye-content henna than Yemen, but I'm one of the weirdos that see a color difference between crops and Yemen, to me, makes an Irish Setter color that I prefer over the others.

Hi there , thank you for your advice, I left it for 6 hrs , I mixed Rajasthan and Yemem, so my hair got an orange, one week after looks great much more dark.I love it.
Thank you for your advice.

Wintersun, i don't know if you saw this, but this was a post before you asked how she got her hair that color. Its not the full recipe, but its a start :)

Hello All! I am brand new here and usually don't register on threads. I've recently started using Cassia Obovata (2 x's now) and coffee/catnip/rosemary/clove/sage rinses every other day to cover the grays that are coming in. My hair is naturally medium ash brown but has been heavily dyed/highlighted. I have about 4" of new growth so there's a pretty big difference in color. I am ready to take the henna plunge! But I don't want orange or even much red, more of a deep auburn is what I would like but I'm not sure how to achieve this. I've been reading your posts to try and get some ideas of what to mix with henna to get a deep auburn. And by the way, you all have such georgeous hair! I will have my hubby take a picture of my hair before and after but will have to find where to by body art quality henna first.

Here's a picture of my hennaed hair:

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh182/Dientje007/DSC01229-1.jpg

It's quite light, so more copper-coloured that real auburn henna, but that is exactly the way I like it..

What is the henna recipe you use? Your color is lovely!

I would like my hair to be a bit more orange and not so red. I just bought cassia and will probably use a henna/cassia mix from now on. On these pictures I've used only henna.

Hey- I do believe we are hair twins! :beerchug:
I LOVE the updo in this pic. very nice!

I have also been trying to keep the henna saturation level at its current state- my hair has reached the right level of rich red- not too orange and not too burgundy/cool red for my complexion. And I do not want it to get any darker. after talking with Nightshade and a few other hennaheads, I recently used cassia with my normal full head henna- a 50/50 mix. It worked very well- my roots are not a bit orange in comparison with the rest of the length, but eventually it will even and blend better. The cassia will help keep the color from getting too cool red and keep it at the level I like it. I think the cassia henna mix will work well for you, too.
Gorgeous hair! Thanks for sharing your pics. :)

My henna'd hair color and my henna+indigo'd color are both in my blog... the henna'd color is multiple applications (if you look close you can see the lighter roots coming in, ugh) and the henna+indigo obviously went way too dark on me... my natural color is mid-ash brown with a few scatterings of gray... :)

Don't henna your hair!!! I love the color it is right now! :D

I recently hennaed my hair to try and get the roots of my hair to match my dyed and damaged length. I used a mix of Caca brun mama and Caca Noir mama from Lush. It came out to be a very close approximation to my natural color except the hennaed parts have a lot more red than I naturally do but 'ehhh what did I expect?' lol.

Here's my most recent henna. Please excuse the goofy expression. The colour's a little off, sadly; it's more red than orange, honest. But this is the day I henna'd so I have orange scalp, too.

The length's not as dark as it appears, and in sunlight, it's pretty much ALL that flaming orange colour.

I have been putting
Water, plain yogurt and lemon. I also mix in amala and aritha powder. I have very dark brown hair and my hair color hasn't changed much. it looks lighter in the sun. I wish the color would change though :(

Thanks, Tina! I've done 5 hennas so far, full head. I bought all from mehandi.com from the henna for hair site. The first 4 were Jamilla, the last was the henna Catherine sells for African American hair. I will use the AA one from now on for roots and glosses, although I may mix it with a remaining pack of Jamilla that I have. The only thing I mix it with is strong tea (chamomile and pomegranite rooibos). Before henna, I dyed my hair usually a dark auburn or med reddish brown, and my roots are coming in as a rather dark reddish-brown, just a tad of grey on one side of my hairline. I think I'll have the same issue as you with my new growth being so dark, but my hair grows so slowly, it'll take some time to see it...

Is there any specific henna brands that would be recommended - any to stay away from? I'm looking for something natural looking with a copper tone. I have medium brown hair naturally.

Also, does it matter if your hair has been chemically dyed previously? Will this cause weird reactions - greens?

Your pictures are all really beautiful. I heart red hair.

Is there any specific henna brands that would be recommended - any to stay away from? I'm looking for something natural looking with a copper tone. I have medium brown hair naturally.

Also, does it matter if your hair has been chemically dyed previously? Will this cause weird reactions - greens?

I get my henna at www.hennaforhair.com and they have a fabulous downloadable e-book on henna that would be a great place to start learning.

Your pictures are all really beautiful. I heart red hair.

If you have any Indian or Middle Eastern grocery or variety stores nearby, look for these brands of henna: Jamila, Afshan, Dulhan, Mumtaz, Reshma. None of these contain PPD dyes or metallic salts.

The e-book on H4H does have some good tips, but I wouldn't take it as gospel, particularly as regards the use of lemon juice, the amount of henna needed for your hair length, the amount of time sitting for dye release, the amount of time needed on your head (less/shorter for those does fine, IMO), and the grave necessity of only using henna from their shop.

Green can be caused by using indigo, not henna, over hair that has been dyed with anything containing peroxide, or using said dyes on hair that already has indigo on it. "Henna" mixes that contain indigo sometimes claim to be pure henna; they're labeled as colors other than straight red...black, brown, chestnut, burgundy, etc.

If you get pure real henna, it's safe to use before or after any chemical process.

In my siggie: the bottom half is old henndigo which I'm gradually trimming out. The top half is henna and cassia. :) My natural color is a light to medium brown (lighter than the henndigo you see here).

I hennaed the first time over chemical dye. It saved my dry damaged hair. Your hair would look pretty with henna. I think gathering info and buying from someone reputable is a good start. Henna for hair or Henna Sooq are the two that come to mind.

Me too, me too!

Here is my old henna. I basically used full strength BAQ, warm water and lemon to achieve the colour. This pic is from 2007 I think.

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n75/v02ekan/rygg2_redigerad_sig.jpg

Then I got tired of my pretty over hennaed hair and in August or September 2007 I cut and bleached it down. I kind of regret cutting so much, but the colour really was too dark for me, my ends were almost burgundy.
This is hair after 2 cuts and 2 bleaches.shudder:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n75/v02ekan/28januari2007l18.jpg

Then a couple of days ago I couldn't resist any longer. This time I used henna gloss ;50/50 henna/cassia and yogurt.
It turned out perfect. No line between the virgin and the bleached parts and I so feel like ME again. :cheese:
The ends aren't as uneven as they look here. Indoor lighting with flash.

I wish I could get your almost burgundy color. I can't seem to get past medium deep red. And your color now is gorgeous. It isn't something you see often.

Thank you:)
The burgundy parts was mostly an effect from some henna-indigo experiments in the beginning of my henna career. The only tip I have for getting that dark colour is just to henna and henna and henna and henna again;)

Same here, except for the "deep" part. I guess my natural color is too light with strong gold-tones and it makes my color a medium red (with an orange cast in certain lights) after three very long applications (using heat). I'm at my wit's end trying to darken it up. Two years ago using indigo helped the length darken (took bloody well long enough, and never made it to black, or even close), but my roots were still too light. *sigh* If only multiple applications in a small period of time wasn't such a pain in the butt...

You could try sandwiching henna-indigo-henna applications to get it darker and more toward the burgundy. Don't wash in between any of the stages. Henna, rinse as best as you can, immediately apply indigo, rinse, and if you're up for it henna again -- or don't wash and henna again in a day or two. I had semi-luck with that, especially after doing it twice within a month. Good luck on whatever you try!

Its been a few months since I hennaed it. Few spoonfuls of henna mixed with water and let set overnight, then mixed with conditioner and applied to hair for about an hour. Picture is inside without flash, In sunlight from the window. The lighter part is the part that was chemically dyed a few times, always faded very rapidly, and was almost blond when I hennaed it. Might try to henna again to darken it a bit to match the rest of my hair, but meh, I really like it the way it is two-tonned and all. :)

Hahaha - I'm supposed to be on the recovery wagon, trying to stay away from henna. I've snipped and chopped like mad cutting it out as it grows. And then I go and peruse this page and start thinking... "Well gee... maybe if I tried again... but used more cassia and less henna this time..."... (for wanting lighter hair)... And then I see all the rich dark browns with a hint of red, and remember when I got that shade a few times... and think "Hmm... just a few applications... just touch up the roots instead of whole head applications... Maybe I should go back to it!"

The henna really does make hair quite beautiful! Lovely photos, everyone!! :cheese:

I'll probably try a few more applications of this honey lightening recipe (currently dripping in my hair)... and if no color shift, even a slight one, happens... I may just go ahead and retake that henna plunge... just in a bit more moderation than I used to.

if you have colored hair (dye, chemicals, and then blonde bleach highlights.) that is growing out (about four inches of growth) would you henna over that? Or do I have to wait for it all to grow out, and then use henna. Will henna help with my grey roots? I am new to all this and just starting the journey, reading the artciles and trying to figure out all the abbreviations. (like bsl)

Ivglvk - I had growing out blonde highlights with my natural medium ash brown roots (a good 6 inches of regrowth) and, while I can see where the red is brighter where the highlights were, to me at least, it's not as obvious being auburn-lighter auburn as when it was med. brown-blonde.

Thank you. :) It is an older pic, but my hair is pretty much the same. A bit shorter, but the color is about the same. It is henna over chemical dye, so it will get redder as my roots grow out.

Outdoors and indoors :)

I hennaed 3 times last year with a 100% henna powder I bought here (I'm too lazy to buy online..). It wasn't body art quality, so I don't know how effective the dye was. But I still like the fiery red I got from it (even if I just wanted to enhance my copper lol).

The lighter part is my virgin hair, I'm growing the henna out since it darkened my hair too much. I'll try a cassia/henna mixture when I have most of my color back.

I just put henna on my head after strand testing and researching this forum...so many pretty colors! CopperHead, your color is GORGEOUS, just what I want. Maybe after oxidation I'll get close. I have a before pic and a strand test pic...maybe someone has similar hair that can offer some advice on how many applications and how often to reach that intense red? This forum is a godsend!

YES! I've used Wella Koleston for years (doesn't fade badly at all) but recently started losing a lot of hair because of a severe iron deficiency, and decided to go chem-free.

So nice to know someone else out there!
