View Full Version : Log roll -- instructions requested

Someone recently told me that her siggy pic isn't a French twist, it's a log roll. She tried to explain how to make it, but I came out with a log blob instead of a log roll.

Does anyone have instructions on how to make a log roll? Pics and/or video would be much appreciated.

I have BSL+ hair. When my hair was APL, I used to make lovely FT's, but I haven't been able to for a long time, now. I think that a log roll would be a suitable substitute.

Perhaps this will help you... ;) (Ignore my weird oily ends)

You're welcome. I'm glad it was clear. The whole time I am thinking "slow down, Lisa..." :silly: So, I'm glad it wasn't too fast.

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread now but I can't see the video... I get to photobucket but nothing seems to work. The same thing happened with a couple of photobucket videos I was trying to watch at TBB as well... Anyone else who have problems or could there be some settings I need to change on my computer? I'm a computer moron when it's about things like this...

When I saw the thread title I had to think immediatly on the video of Lady Godiva. I'm glad she posted it again.
ETA: I learned to do the logroll from this video;

Thank you, OhioLisa and Lady Godiva! Those videos were exactly what I needed to "get it." By the second time I watched OhioLisa's, I was able to do one, which I secured with a hairstick.

DH walked by as I was watching Lady Godiva's video. I told him that I was having some serious hair envy, because "Her hair is like eight feet long." LOL. I'm not sure it's that long, but it sure makes my just-past-bsl hair a bit green. :)

I'm so happy to have a French-twist-esque do in my repetoire again.

BTW, OhioLisa, I like your tat. I'd kind of like to get one that shows when I put my hair up.

What I found pleasantly surprising is seeing how OhioLisa twists hers in reverse to how I twist mine. I don't get to watch others do hair stuff around me (besides Hubs when he wears a ponytail), especially putting in Log Rolls.

Thanks for posting your vid too, Lady Godiva. Your hair is so gorgeous. :D I think your video was the way I learned it as well, even though I do mine in the opposite direction.

Neoma, I am so glad it helped you. And thanks for the compliment on the tat. :)

Thanks to OhioLisa and Lady Godiva for posting videos on how to do the log roll. After a couple of attempts I was able to do this easily and secure with hairsticks. I have just bought a couple of new hairsticks so this updo hairstyle will be just the thing to show off my new hair toys :)

I can't wait until my hair is long enough to do this style! It's too thick to do it at my current length of about 23 1/2 inches. My hair is essentially short and fat, haha.

Oh my goodness, Lady Godiva, you have so much hair! I'm definitely jealous!! My hair is currently only 21" and I can only a peacock twist. I can barely do a cinnamon bun, but can't wait to be able to do more, including this!:p

Wow I just tried log roll and was stunned I could actually do a proper one now. I remember when I first followed Lady Godiva's instruction I could only do the twisting part because I ran out of hair for wrapping. It looked just like a French twist, but now it does look like a log roll. Yay for growth!

I twist my hair in either directions for log roll or other twisty styles. Depends on what hairtoys I'm using and whether I'm feeling right handed or left handed. :)

Wow, great video! I had been wondering how to do this since my hair is getting longer and now I can! I need a few more inches to make a proper one though. Mine looks more like a um well not sure. But anyway, I will practice this and then when it gets longer I will be able to do it! Thanks SO much OhioLisa and Godiva!

I notice the same thing. :) I twist mine the same way you do, JE. I struggled with the log roll for a long time, until you posted that video and photo tutorial in the Articles section last spring/summer...? It was close to the time that I met Denise in New York, and she watched me do it and affirmed that I was making it correctly. Since then, especially as my hair grows into the superlengths, it's become an utter staple of my updo repertoire!

in the slideshow, mine is secured by a short hairstick.

My hair is thin and only 31 inches long. I used to twist my log roll, but have discovered that I don't need to twist. I make a loop and wrap the tail around the base. I prefer using a ficcare to hold it, like both OhioLisa and Lady Godiva. With or without the twisting, I cannot get sticks to hold it.

I never get it to wrap so smooth and even.

Here's a how-to I did of my version of the Log Roll. I tuck the ends through the loop, and since I dont' have a faccar (sp?) I use a hair stick and a scrunchie. SOrry the quality is so cruddy, but I can never upload nice videos to YouTube... they always end up cruddy. :(

Daeana, that was fun to watch! I'm amazed that your single hair fork-stick holds all your hair in place.

Stagecoach, your video is great, and your hair is so pretty. I'd call your version a tucked Log Roll. :)

Eresh, keep practicing. Some days they're neater than others, like mine today...:ponder:

Frizzinator, just to be clear, I don't actually twist my hair in making the style (not like how a rope braid is twisted). It's just looped once, and then the loop is twisted against itself once.

Saoirse, the first time I saw Denise put in a Log Roll was in Dallas, and it was like watching myself do it, except eight inches lower. ;)

Oh, thanks for the suggestion! I really wasn't sure what to call it, since it's so similar to yours, and indeed that's where I first learned of the log roll. I just find that my hair wont stay if I don't tuck the ends through the loop.

So, tucked Log Roll it is!

I live that idea of tucking the ends through the loop. And, I recognized that scrunchi-slide as a solution I use a lot of times.

I'd love to someone use this technique for a peacock log roll. Hint hint! I'd do it myself but my ends are thin. :(

Great videos everyone, very helpful to updo impaired persons like myself.

I've been doing this lately using a single braid, and securing it with a leather hair slide or Ficcare.

schnee---I think I'd injure myself if I tried that, and I gallop horses cross country! ;) :)

I've always wanted to try those, but I need a low hair style so I can put a helmet/hat on. :) I'll try that for an evening out though.....which is coming up sooner than I realized :D

I do this, too, Dulci, usually when I have a messy Day 3 braid, but am in too much of a time crunch to undo the thing before work. It's super fast.

Darkhorse, the monster clips are mostly Ficcares, here's the link (http://www.ficcare.com/Categories.aspx?id=1) to their website, but search on the boards for other places to get them cheaper. Prepare to be assimilated!
