View Full Version : Do you mix gold with silver?
Feye

I'm curious, do you match your hairtoys with your jewellery when it comes to gold and silver colors?
For example, would you wear a silver colored hairtoy in your hair together with gold jewellery, and vice versa?
Feye
June 6th, 2009, 07:52 AM
I'll start.
I basically think that gold and silver look good together, but when it comes to mixing the colors myself I end up not doing it. My silver hair toys always match my silver earrings, and if I wear a gold colored hair toy I will search for gold ear studs. I wish that I was more flexible!

I have a stainless steel nose ring (so, silver-colored), so anytime I wear gold jewelry, I am mixing gold and silver. So I don't care about mixing them otherwise.

I'm a strictly silver person. All of my jewelry is silver-colored. I have one gold backed ficcare and one hairstick with gold colored accents, and I never wear them.

I tend to be more strict about matching bits of actual jewelry than I am about coordinating my hair toy with the rest of my ensemble.
For me, my hair toys are pretty much about the main color, not whatever silver or gold accents that might be visible if you look really closely.

This is one area where my tendency to OCD comes out. I have to match all my clothing, including jewelry, outerware and, um... underwear.
Always.
An example, I was getting ready to go to a club with a friend. Black top, blue jeans, leopard print heels, gold hoop earrings, gold ficcare maximus holding up the half up, leopard print giant plastic bracelet, neutral skin colored bra and panties.
The happiest making part of this was that the bra was lined in leopard print.
Sad.
I know.
If I wear mixed metals, it's mixed all the way, from hair piece to all other jewelry.
I'm trying to not branch into tones and shades.

Yes I do. My earrings and rings are mixed metals all the time. I have a yellow gold signet pinkie ring I've worn on my right hand since 11th grade. I used to keep all the rings on one hand the same metal but now I don't. I bought a white gold and a yellow gold skinny wedding band and wear those as pinkie rings on the other hand. Then I mix the rest of my rings. For earrings I mix it up too. I have 5 holes in my right ear and 3 in the left, so plenty of opporunities! I wear some kind of a hair toy almost every day. I pay more attention to the color of the hair toy coordinating with what I am wearing clothing-wise, than I do to matching metal color to my jewelry. If I was wearing let's say a white gold Ficcare, I'd probably wear white gold hoops in my bottom holes and not worry much about the rest of it. I'm also mixing in rose gold jewelry too but I don't have any rose gold hair toys.

Because of my coloring I can get away with wearing either gold or silver, so oftentimes I buy pieces of jewelry/hair toys that combine the two. That way I match no matter what color my earrings, or watch, or what have you are. On the other hand, if the piece in my hair is only straight silver or gold I tend to try to keep the rest of my jewelry the same.
Of course, this coming from a person who occasionally mismatches clothes on purpose, just to try to relax a bit about it. :silly:

I prefer silver and generally wear silver coloured metal - my earrings are Little 7 and I wear them all the time. My rings are also silver. I have 5 gold trimmed Ficcares, and I am not bothered about the colour difference. My go-to every-day Ficcare is a gold border Max, because I don't have any worries about the paint chipping:). I don't wear the others so often, but that's not because they are gold, but because I like them less than my silver ones in terms of their paint colours. I have wondered what would happen if I got a silver border or lotus Max though - would I stop wearing the gold one, simply because I prefer the look of silver?

I never mix, always match.
That said, I have one ring that is silver and gold combined, and if I wear it, then I am more relaxed about mixing.

My version of "only if someone promises me cheese" is actually "only if I'm wearing an item of jewellery that already mixes the two". I have a favourite watch in stainless steel with gold screws, a silver bracelet with gold accents and a few pairs of 3-colour-gold knot earrings that help to tie in items that are gold and silver.
I am not very relaxed about this and have been known to take gold/silver coloured buttons into account too

It bugs the heck out of me that a couple of my handbags have silver hardware. I love the bags but the hardware is a problem. I always feel mismatched when I carry them.

I wear goldstone glasses & silver jewelry, so I'm always mixed. For some reason, I just don't care for silver around my eyes.

June 6th, 2009, 10:34 AM
My jewelry is mostly silver or white gold. I have very yellow undertones in my skin, so gold makes it more pronounced. But my glasses are a coppery-goldish tone. I have no clue why.Maybe since my skin color is what it is, I want the glasses not to stand out as much. My hair toys are a mix, too. Hummm. It doesn't seem to matter. At least on the day to day. If I have something formal that is a whole different situation. Then all things must coordinate perfectly.OCD takes over and goes full tilt.

I can't stand to mix the two. The only time I wear gold is when I'm wearing clothes with colour. Since the majority of my wardrobe is black then I only wear silver.

I mix. My wedding band is gold with a beautiful leaf pattern done in white gold around the center. I picked it out so I could wear gold and silver at the same time and always match. Most of my silver pieces tarnish, so I've switched to white gold because I'm lazy about cleaning them. I like both, so I wear both. :)

I dislike the way (yellow) gold looks, so for me everything is silver, white gold, sterling etc.
I do try to keep any stones or other parts of rings/hair sticks/necklaces and such in the same color group.

I discovered when I pierced my ears with gold studs last year that I'm kind of obsessive about matching. I couldn't wear silver for months.
So, yeah, if my hair toy has silver in it, my jewelry is silver, too. The only exception is that I will wear gold, copper, and bronze together.

The only jewelry I usually wear is my cz and silver nose stud, a silver and diamond watch, and a pair of silver CBRs with silver beads in my ears. All the rest of my jewelry is siver toned. I don't dislike the look of mixed metals (Carolyn, I love the sound of your style!) but I prefer the look of silver with my skin, and it's easier not to have to think about it.
Actually, all those items are stainless steel, but they're silver colored.

I usually don't mix. I have gold seasons (winter, spring) and silver/platinum (summer, fall) seasons each year. At the end of the season I clean and put away jewelry and hairtoys and take out the other set. The problem with this system is you need at least two wedding sets, watches, twice as many earrings and twice as many Ficcares so they can be a bit expensive. :D

Oops I posted prematurely. I wanted to say I am currently cheating. My earrings are gold hoops with silver globe slides on the hoops. Also, I have some really awesome hair sticks that are metallic gold AND silver. That way I cannot screw up. I do not change my earring very often because of my time constraints, however, if I do change them it is usually to pearls ....again sort of cheating. :p

I wear very little gold (and none of it real) but definitely do mix. Gold and black Primavera ficcare, gold trim on skirt, then silver jewelry.
In my goth days I used to be silver only, and still tend in that direction, but with my hair its natural color gold actually can look good on me. Oh, and my hair itself is both gold and silver, so I am accentuating that. :)

I rarely if ever wear gold at all (I have one gold ring and rarely wear it, and that's about it) - I'm a silver girl all the way. I do have a strange fascination with bronze and copper, though, if that counts. I never wear it with my silver, though.

I was about to type that I *always* mix silver & gold but then realized that I'm not wearing any silver today. That's only because I lost my silver & gold butterfly ring in Colorado several weeks ago. :justy: My purity ring is gold, my glasses are a bronze-y colour, as is one of my flexi-8s. The other flexi is silver & my ficcares are plain silver and then gold & brown. I mix & match everything else.

I wear the things that make me feel good, willy-nilly....gold earrings in the first hole, and silver ones in the second? Sure. Gold necklace, silver hairtoy? You betcha. As olng as I feel like a goddess when I walk out the door, it's all good.
I'm kind of a gypsy though, so YMMV.

I like the combination of gold & silver, and wear them all the time. My wedding band is yellow gold, and engagement ring is white gold, as I think diamonds look better in white gold (not that I have so many that I can be fussy about it! ) I do have a lot more silver than gold, though.

Yep. My wedding ring is gold, but since I stretched my ears, my earrings are generally silver-toned. (Actually, they're all stainless or titanium....)
ETA: I tend to prefer yellow gold and copper over silver. However, gold earrings mean plating that gets worn away, and I've had my ears swell at 14kt plenty of times. Little7 earrings just don't come in gold... :(

I voted 'sometimes', since I consider myself a Silver (or stainless steel) girl - but then I realized I always wear my grandmother's daisy ring, and that is gold.
Somehow, because I always wear it, it feels like it doesn't count... ;)
Also, it has blue turqoise stones in it (around a dark garnet center), which makes it more 'cool' looking. And I tend to let the gold of the petals in between tarnish, so it's not as shiny, yellow gold (and it's an unusual gold mixture anyway, it's a handmade ring, probably around 80 years old, from Indonesia).
So, apart from the one gold piece of jewelry I always wear, most of the rest of it is silver-coloured! :D

I don't have too many hair toys to decide between right now. :) But when it comes to wearing jewelry, I prefer white gold or silver, but I have some pieces of gold jewelry of sentimental value that I mix with the other. I don't think it looks bad.

Sometimes I do, it depends on what else I am wearing (and I have a couple of earrings and hairtoys that are mixed metals and have copper, gold, and silver tones in the designs on them).
If I am really dressed up, I am likely to go with one or the other and have things matching to some extent. More often I choose gold over silver because it goes better with most of my clothing.

I voted for cheese.
Honestly, my watch is silver with itty bitty gold accents, and that's about the sum total of the gold I tolerate. My coloring doesn't look good with gold at *all*.
Most of my hairtoys are silver for that reason. I do have some gold hairtoys, because I have some jewelry that has gold accents. Like I have a millefiori glass bead necklace with gold spacers. When I wear that, I *have* to pull out some glass and gold hairsticks. So I pick the focus on the jewelry first, and then pick the hairtoy to match. Same thing with colors--if I'm wearing blue jewelry, I have silver and blue hairsticks, etc.
HK, I have so many hairsticks...

I typically only wear silver-toned jewelry (pewter, silver, white gold, etc). I'd like to get a few copper pieces, though, as I'm intrigued by them.

I like to wear those watches that are silver with gold accents. I usually wear silver or black clips if I'm going to wear anything metal/plastic in my hair, and I will wear it with one of those watches, but not with a solid gold watch. I wear silver framed glasses. I don't wear any other jewelry.

I prefer not to mix metals, but if I do it must be a pretty balanced mix. I wear rose gold tops & rose gold anodized titanium posts in my piercings and I don't swap that jewelry often. Anything else I prefer in rose gold but copper is my next preference. I do not usually wear both yellow gold/brass and copper at the same time. I also never wear silver or silver colored (steel, HP titanium, white gold) jewelry. My stones have to coordinate also. I mainly wear white opals and some turquoise. I have stretched lobes and prefer to wear stone or glass in them, so all my lobe jewelry is either: white/clear, blue/green, or gold/rose quartz (skin tone neutral). I stick to the same color schemes with my metal hair toys. I am less worried about matching wooden jewelry but if there is some color I do not usually go outside my preferred palette. I also own some jewelry in teal titanium but I do not wear it as I don't have a matching set for all my piercings. Rose gold/white opal is my basic go-with-everything set that makes me feel a little classier.
Typing this out made me really contemplate how particular I am with my jewelry, when truth is I rarely wear anything that isn't attached to me 24/7! If I have to put it on in the morning, I'm probably not wearing it regularly.

I am usually a gold person; that said...all I own is my wedding and engagement rings, and never wear necklaces or bracelets anymore LOL
I have two tone earrings; gold/silver rope braid rings that I used to wear, some silver rings....and plain (cheap/walmart) gold rings:p....that have been stored for ages in a jewelry box.
Last week I put on gold hoops to go with a barrette and removed them; they went back in the box.
Now I like colored/handmade Etsy costume earrings....or natural materials (wood/antler/shell) that match or coordinate with my hair toys.
Metal earrings seem artificial to me ....or my preferences have simplified as I age:hmm:
But back to the question.....I usually do not mix; if I did it was because it went with an accent on the outfit I had on, or went better with the color or necklace/bracelets I used to wear.

I would do this if both the items had some secondary characteristic that makes it seem like they "go" in the outfit.... Rose gold is a little easier to get away with this!
Usually I end up mixing metals because my wedding and engagement rings don't match with gold necklaces, but I don't give a hoot.

Yes, definitely. I think it has a carefree, confident, playful vibe to it. I like to wear a silver and gold necklace layered, or rings that have both metals. The antique diamond earrings I always have on, mix yellow gold with platinum. In hair toys, I have a slight preference to gold, because I like how it picks up the gold tones in my hair, but very shiny silver is also good.
