Okay, so after lots of reading and asking some questions, I did a henna/cassia gloss today. I took 1 Tbsp of Jamila henna and let it sit overnight. I mixed it with distilled water only. 13 hours later I mixed 1.5 Tbsp cassia with catnip (made with distilled water) and mixed this with the henna. Then I mixed in enough plain yogurt to cover all my hair. I washed my hair with shikakai and amla, then towel dried. I applied the gloss all over and covered it up with plastic, let it sit for an hour.
Results: hair feels wonderful, so slick, nice color added to rest of my hair, very subtle....white/grey hair completely unchanged :brickwall
The whole point of this was to cover my white strands. What did I do wrong? I am so frustrated. I can't seem to find a solution to cover the greys without making my hair super dark or flaming red. Help please!

Everyone that I have seen using henna or cassia mix to cover grey either uses more than a gloss, a heavy gloss or several applications. I know that someone used a henna on all white hair but only for a few minutes like maybe 10 and it came out a lovely shade of blonde, a golden blonde.

That may have had cassia in the henna on the white hair turned blonde.
For me 1 tbsp sounds like very little henna, but for my glosses I use left over henna so I don't know.

I use 1/4 cup henna for my glosses, 1 tbsp is not nearly enough........ also thats a LONG time to wait for dye release. Normally my henna releases in about 2-3 hours in a warm place. Its possible the henna demised.
To cover grey I also find adding 1/8 teaspoon white vinegar helps the grey take it up.

I don't think the dye demised, as the rest of my hair did get color, not just from the cassia either. I will try more henna/cassia in the gloss and the vinegar. thanks for the feedback

I use about a quarter cup of henna powder along - and that is just for root coverage! I think you used way too little henna. There needs to be enough mud like paste/goop to completely cover hair all over. And left on the head and kept warm like with a shower cap and a towel covering it. I leave mine on for three hours or so. Dye release - it should leave a bright orange stain on skin like the inside of your arm. Hope this helps. Let us know how it works for you.

How Disappointing!!!!!!
From what I have read on this site and on HFH, a gloss will not be strong enough to cover grey.
You need to use full strength henna and cassia.
I shampoo my hair with a clarifying shampoo, then apply the henna cassia mix (dye released--mixed only with distilled water) and leave it on 2 hours--rinse and the white is covered.
Good luck!!!!:cheer::cheer::cheer:

Grays are stubborn and you'll need a full treatment rather than a gloss to get it covered, but you may be able to use a gloss to maintain, after that. It will need to be a stronger gloss than you used.
Every henna needs a different amount of standing time, and it also varies with temp and recipe. Acidic recipes with vinegar or lemon juice need more time. Neurtal mixes like water, or tea need less. Jamila takes a while. There's no way 13 hours killed it.
If I were you, I'd do half and half henna and cassia, and leave it on two to three hours to get the look you want. Of course, I'd suggest using some hairs from your brush to check it out first. Don't forget, hennaed hair is much brighter for the first few days, then settles down.

sibylla-was that a gloss that covered your grays? What was the mix you used?
I am nervous about doing a full henna treatment. Right now I'm letting some henna dye release to do strand test of a gloss with just henna, no cassia and more henna than I used the first time. Maybe I will do a STRONG gloss for the test. Will it cover grays better if I eliminate the cassia, or make no difference, just change the color? My main reason for adding in the cassia was to cut the color of the henna. I don't want to make my hair darker.
I only have a few grays and I don't want to pluck them out to test them. I've read if you pluck out hairs it can kill the follicle and hair won't grow back. None of my grays fall out (yet), so I can only strand test on the rest to get some idea of what it will do with the straight henna gloss.

cocolover,I use a Swedish product called Herbique. I only added olive oil and hot water to my mix. I normally do something in between a gloss and a full henna treatment. Mainly because I´m lazy...When I only make a gloss it doesn´t cover my new whites..but with the frecuent use of glosses the whites get covered eventually.

I got a heavy gloss to cover my grays! :D I took 1/2 C of Jamilla, mixed with catnip instead of water, and let sit for 3 hours. Then I mixed that with about an equal amount of yogurt. I slopped it all on, wrapped it up, and let it sit for 1 hour. Right now I'm a little orangish, but I'm hoping that will settle in the next few days. This is only at the roots though. There is very little change on the length, which is what I was going for.
