View Full Version : Color from gloss?

I've been reading the henna boards for a few weeks now, and I'm really interested. However, I'm not sure if I'm ready to take the plunge and play with red/orange hair (in fact, I may just lighten with honey this summer). But I was wondering if I could get some toned down results plus the added conditioning benefits if I just did a gloss? I'm not going to go out and buy henna any time soon, I'm just fishing for information at this point.
Pics after just a gloss would be appreciated!

It all depends on how much henna you use and how long you leave it on. For subtle coloring, you can:
Use 1 teaspoon of henna in conditioner and leave it on for half an hour.
Use 1 tablespoon henna + 1 tablespoon indigo + 8 tablespoons cassia, all with chamomile tea, and leave it on for an hour.
Or you can go for full coloring like Riverboat Red used to do (http://www.network54.com/Forum/227393/message/1045499730/My+henna+gloss+recipe---).
ETA: Or you can go for one of the "blonde hennas" like Avigal (http://www.ballbeauty.com/avigal-henna-colors.htm).

Thanks for the recipes, Flaxen.
I'm still waiting for my hair to turn blue from the indigo. (hehehe, trying to scare the poster!)

I'm also interested in glossing only.I bought a nice green pack of henna today.I'm planning to mix half to one tablespoon of henna with some...(lemon juice?honey?water?coconut milk?)haven't figured it out yet.And plenty of conditioner.Which do you think would be the best?I don't want to get too much red in my hair, just a warm golden colour and loads of gloss!!:p

Thanks for the responses! This is just the sort of info I was looking for :) For the record, even if I do end up playing with henna glosses in the future, I'd never put indigo in. Personally, I want my hair either dark honey blonde or reddish -- I think I'm too pale and pink colored to handle a dark brown.
If anyone has any other advice and/or pics, send 'em along :cheese:

Skip the acid. Just use warm water to make it muddy, and then mix with conditioner.

I do nothing but glosses, and the reality is, a gloss will give you color, which will build up over time. You can negate coloring, by letting the dye release, then demise. It will still have conditioning properties, and no color. You can let the color demise by mixing the henna, letting dye release, then letting it continue to stand for about 16-24 hours.

Good idea! Thanks!I'll do the glossing this way.Just 2 more things: how long do you think I can leave the gloss on my hair to get only minimal colouring???
how much henna you're using to make the gloss?

That kind of sound like you are looking for Cassia or Cassia with a touch of henna.

Well....you're right. This cassia is what I need. But I have no possibility to buy things online, and cassia is definetely something that you can't find everywhere...what a pity.I was looking for it in health food stores,pharmacies...no luck.
So I bought some henna.Again.
I used to dye my hair red with it,but now I'm happy to be blondish again...
I used to have very nice long hair, but then I had it permed and bleached...and cut shoulder length...pfff.The only thing that helped my hair was henna...but I don't want my hair to be that dark red anymore...
Wish I could get some cassia.

I did a henna gloss last night with 1.5 tablespoons of henna and a splash of lemon juice, left for an hour to develop and 2 hours on my head. I am chuffed to bits with the results, my results is in my siggi and avatar.

It looks awesome, Jojo. :) Did you put your die-released henna paste in with some conditioner to make the gloss? Or yogurt, or...?

Your hair is a lovely colour. It would be a shame to change it imho.
Plus henna doesn't fade much, so it could be hard to get out if you want to be blonde again. Yes, even a gloss!

Thanks :) I've been going back and forth about changing it for a while, and still haven't made my mind up, so I'm just sniffing around for information, really. Btw, the color in my siggy is with camera flash and indirect sunlight -- in a lot of lighting I just look mousy brown, which is so frustrating!

I first put 1.5 tablespoons in boiled water with a splash of lemon juicde and let it develop for 1 hour, then I mixed it with a ton of conditioner only cheapo one and left it on my head for 2 hours.
I really love the results and intend to do this every other month. My hair feels so much better.

Just to add I did last week do this with 1 tablespoon of henna and 3 of cassia and got no colour change at all, but the condition was still as good. Id be careful as your hair is so blond that a gloss without cassia would result in a more orange result. I did do this last year but for some reason the henna washed out.

Oh, awesome, I'm giving this a try as soon as I get my mitts on some henna. Is a strand test recommended for a gloss? I have colored a few times in the past year with Revlon Colorsilk OTC dark brown dye to cover grey.
It seems to me from reading through all the old threads so far that glosses are "safer" in the sense that it's a less dramatic color change, which is what appeals to me. I LOVE the full on henna color, but I don't want that forever red, since I'll probably let the greys come in unmolested, eventually. What I've gathered from my reading is that a couple of glosses will give me the stronger hair henna benefit with maybe a little bit of red - is that correct?
I'm thinking I'd stick with Flaxen's recipe - Use 1 teaspoon of henna in conditioner and leave it on for half an hour - is that pretty safe?

Yes id say its pretty safe, you should get a nice subtle colour and plenty of gloss with that formula.
dont forget to post photos!
ETA-I didnt do a strand test!

a cassia gloss would look great in your hair or maybe some marigold dried flowers, soaked this gives golden hues to your colour hair, which the sun makes sparkle. My natural colour is dark blond with a hint of copper and the marigold rinse looked lovely and it washes out after about 6 washes too, so no commitment.

woohoo, my henna from Henna for Hair is here, so hopefully, I'll be trying my first gloss tomorrow! Originally, I mainly wanted the strength and conditioning, but now I'm hoping I get a leetle dose of color, too. Got a "Before" pic, too, taken today at 5:15 CST on my porch.
Off to rattle around some more in the archives :)
