i'm diving into henna terratory :surprise:

i have quite thick hair at shoulder blade length and i'm desperate to get life back into it and grow it . i'm realiant on coconut oil to calm it down. in the past i chemical dyed it (ammonia'd blonde and black streaks (most stipid thing i ever did - ruined it and made it dry). I came across the suggestion that henna is very good for upping the condition of hair which i'm well up for, also herd there maybe a nice side effect of it tamming down (we'll see? - i'll let you know).

heres a before picture-
http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/rachelheales/hair/SDC10747.jpg

i've used 200g of Yemeni henna
warmed chamomile tea
cinnamon and vanilla essence (which really it don't need) - now noted

i've decided to use henna for the redness/auburn as i'd like to have some darkness back in my hair in the long run which again "henna darkens rather than brightens"
thank goodness and plus i adore red hair :p
apparently the henna i have is good for red rather than orange results, for security i'm leaving it on for as long as i can till , well before bed really (it's midday now), sightly nervouse and yes i know it's going to be bright at first by hay what have i got to loose and im intending to keep adding to the applications till i've got the colour i want then just do roots and also i use cassa (neutral henna) regually to get my condition back in.

i was surprised on how quickly the henna turned not entirely sure that was suppose to happen that fast (if it doesn't work properly i'll just got over again). turned from green to brown and have henna colours on my hand to prove it and my neck :o so i've very quickly chucked it on my hair and omg how messy was i ? :stirpot:
quite fun realy, had a old towl on the floar and put some old clothes on, Vaselined my ears and all around my head, sectioned my hair into 6 and pined them and slop , it was like playing with warm gooey clay and squelch, squelch and then theres the fun shapes you can make (made my youngest giggle) with it when it's all in. ok i had more fun than i probrably should have :p
i've wrapped i in clingfilm and put a wooly hat on to keep it warm while my hair brews.

i'll post tomorrow to show my glowing results then i'll do one probably over the weekend whens its calmed down its colour.

Great before-pic, Rach! Gorgeous highlights and lowlights there! Gorgeous shine and soft wave.

I'm trying to get up the courage to do my first henna, too.

From what I've read so far on this board, START SLOW! :} Dilute the henna in tons of conditioner and only leave it on for a few minutes. Because nothing will remove it, without tons of money spent and tons of damage. henna goes inside the hairshaft and cannot be stripped or color corrected like chemical dyes.

If it's conditioning you want, try cassia (neutral henna).

I think you are going to be a wonderful redhead! You have light coloring so it should look very natural on you. :)

I'm eager to see they results! Thought I must say that I would advise you to just keep it on a couple of hours, it can go very very dark, darker than you want quickly and then be impossible to remove.

i'll do a similar pic tomorrow to compare with my before picture properly .
this was 8 hours worth of heavy henna muddy head.
i love it! and will hopefully deepen a bit over the week, if not i'll top it up a bit then.
what this pic don't show is it's sparkly it is. the texture of it feels very different, glossy and doesn't feel straw like it did prior and oddly, hardly any hair bunged up the plug hole which i would usually expect putting you hair through such an ordeal.

yeay!!!! :cheese:

Congrats on your first henna! It looks wonderful! Hopefully I'll get to try my hand at it this weekend, if the mail man brings it to me soon enough.

Did you have lots left over? I'm a little unsure of how much to use on mine! Looks like you're a bit longer than me.

That turned out perfect! Red is your color. :)

Brat, I would mix more rather than less. You can always freeze the leftover and thaw it out the next time you henna. The stain will be even stronger with the frozen henna. ;)

i made up 300grams and had exactly 100grams left and i was very generous and i've got thick hair, i put it in the freezer, might use it this weekend on girly night in and mix indigo in it and make body art with it (puple henna :) )

Maybe.

The lawsone molecule is orange-red (not red) and on really light hair (well, brown hair too) it may always glow orange-red, especially in the sun.

It does look very dramatic on you. :eyebrows:

What she said. :) Iris did about everything possible trying to tone out the orange to no avail. It may settle a bit, but sunlight illuminates lawsone like nothing else.

Now, if you did several henna applications it will darken and be less orange, but my hennaed hair was cool burgundy then.

Here, for example:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1695&pictureid=20634

You can see the transition between three colors of hair. First is the brighter copper red at the top, which is the henna/cassia blend. From about my hand down is the just henna mix (similar to what you did, but several layers of it), and then from that black line below that is old henna over dye.

Nightshade, How have you delt with the change in coloring?

I have dyed red right now and am contemplating henna over that eventually, and henna on the roots after that of course. Your pictures look like the hair is mostly all one color however, how did you achieve it?

My problem is when I started hennaing that it was not common knowledge that the more times you hennaed, the darker it got :(

So while I wanted copper hair, I ended up with cool burgundy, which looks terrible against my pale yellow-toned skin. After many attempts at lightening, I finally came onto my current mix, which really dilutes the henna (65% cassia + 35% henna and hot chamomile tea, left to dye release for 4 hours atop my warm food dehydrator, and applied to damp hair for 2.5-3 hours). The result is a nice new-penny copper that looks light and natural.

That's what you can see in the top portion of that pic, the part that shines golden red.

The remaining problem was to lighten up the length. I tried honey, amla, EVOO, yogurt, and various combinations in various ways. It worked a *little* but I was still looking at contrast like this when my hair was bunned:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1288&pictureid=17952

4th of July hair- Since we were lighting fireworks in the dark, it was mandated that everyone have a few glow sticks on so we could see one another and not fire a Roman Candle in that direction. Here's what I did with mine.

Interesting note about this pic, shows the henna/cassia blend (hair pulled to bun) versus the straight henna and henna over old dye hair (bun itself).

Then after reading the old Henna Removal thread (no they never found a way), in which people were lightening their henna with peroxide with some success, I lightened my length with Sun-In, which has peroxide as its main active ingredient (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=19317).

I went from this (note this is the same hair in that sunlit pic, I'm just not in a blazing shaft of sunlight here, when my hair was down it blended really well):
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1695&pictureid=19994

to this:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/image.php?u=5944&dateline=1235883606&type=profile

Now, if your problem is that your roots are lighter than the length and you want it all darker, well, then my experiences may not be as much help

Wow, complete with pictures. Thank you for that!

No, I think your experience will absolutley help me.. I have semi-light brown natural and am wanting to have similar results to my dye process, which is the bright coppery red.. I too am fair and can live with the darker red because my skin has pink undertones, but much prefer the lighter color.

Here is another question or two:

If you could do it all over again, start from before you used henna.. would you? How hard is it to do "roots only" on your own head, how long do you leave it on and how accurate are the results.. and if you could go back would you grow out your natural color instead?

and thank you again for being so helpful! You are answering all of my henna questions at one go ;)

Well, then you're in a bit of luck as your results should be similar to mine, we have a similar natural starting color- light brown. :)

Here is another question or two:

If you could do it all over again, start from before you used henna.. would you?

Yep! I'd teleport myself back to tell my 11 year old self to use henna instead of dyes if she REALLY wanted Julia Robert's hair from Pretty Woman, and I'd pack her head full of henna information. In other words, I'd wished I'd found henna so I could skip years of chemical burns on my scalp, and on top of that I wish I had known when I started to use a lighter mix and then do roots only--- but I'd still henna.

How hard is it to do "roots only" on your own head, how long do you leave it on and how accurate are the results.. and if you could go back would you grow out your natural color instead?

My patient and wonderful DH actually does my roots for me. I make my henna a bit on the runny side and we load it into a bottle like this with the tip cut down so its wider (http://www.sallybeauty.com/Color-Applicator-Bottle/SBS-198080,default,pd.html). I take a pre-henna shower, shampoo my hair, condition from the ears down, and then comb it. Then DH sections my hair, applies to the roots and I toss on some saran wrap and a warm hat.

I leave my henna on for 2.5-3 hours. With a lighter mix I find it doesn't get too dark even when left on for awhile, and I like the conditioning benefits and the scalp soothing aspect.

My results are very consistant from time to time with my new mix, "new" being a relative term as I've had it for... eh, a year, year and a half or so now :)

Assuming I remember my natural color as I haven't seen it in... uhm... 17 years in amounts more than half an inch... no. I'm a redhead until at such point I can have all white/silver hair. I do realize that's going to be a bit of a bitch to transition over, but I have a few decades fo figure it out. Heck, maybe by the time I'm 60 someone will have worked out how to remove henna ;)

I love henna, I love my hair red, and it carries so well with my complexion that most people think it's natural now that I have the length fixed up color-wise. :) So, no regrets here.

HOWEVER, I did chemical dye my hair red for about 10 years before finding henna so I knew I wanted red. I also am not the type of person who changes their hair or clothing style often. I know what I like and I stick with that.

Henna's obviously not good for someone who ever wants to get rid of the red.

and thank you again for being so helpful! You are answering all of my henna questions at one go ;)

Not a problem at all :) Henna is a topic I can talk on endlessly, and if my blathering can save one person, be it a LHCer or a lurker, from messing up their hair with henna, I'll consider it well worth my time.

p.s. i'm sure you hear this a lot but once more can't hurt.. your hair is beautiful.

Thank you so much :flowers: I do hear it, but it never means any less each time I do :blossom:

Seriouslly. Thank you. I felt like I was in between a rock and a hard place, wanting to give up the chemical dyes but not wanting to give up my beloved red.. I did a bunch of reading up on this site and H4H, but I still worried that it would come out too dark, be blotchy and not match root to tip as I've seen in some photos.. also be too hard to do roots only, as I am used to doing an all over application with the chemical stuff, and being done with it.

I guess I just really needed someone to say.. it can be done, it's not too hard, the results you want can be achieved. What once was a dreaded task (figuring out what to do with my hair next) is now something I'm actually looking forward to. Thanks again!!

Also, my fault for the hijack! I just seized the oppurtunity to ask you.. sorry Rach!

The last photo is actually my favorite. You've got the features and the attitude-- and your statuesque enough to carry this off. Be an Anne of Green Gables and stand apart from the crowd!

I definitely wouldn't do any more though, other than conservative roots touch-up. Stay browner on top, it looks more natural.

it's reddened my ex-blonde streaks better to red rather than orangish-red.

It looks really nice on you. I have a big order of Yemeni Henna that I've been dying to use.

I've only been fooling around with henna glosses mostly but have now decided to take the big plunge. I tried pure henna on a 2" strip of my hair a couple of months ago and it looked great and felt wonderful. In just a few minutes, I will go downstairs, get out my Yemeni Henna, and begin the dye release process! Tonight, I think, I will put it on my hair. I've already found out that I can cover it (if I don't like the red too much) with indigo and it turns a nice chestnut brown.

Thank you, Rach, for reminding me!:)

still in shock, i look very different. people so far seem either shocked or wow in reaction but they are mostly seeing me in natural bright cloudy light (can't really say sunlight-no sun :( ) which is bright on the school run. one person said after my first application my hair looked rusty, and one person told me to be careful with henna and had to explain i was careful what henna i bought. it's getting people to talk to me probably because i usually try and hide and avoid chit chat (i'm not very good at small talk)

less messy as in it's not so scary with how quickly it can i dye your hands if it splatters on there :D ( i still have hanna tints on my hands- and yes i had gloves but it snuck in while i tidied up my mess). my cassia hasn't arrived yet so haven't seen it in the flesh. how long would you advise, to have it on to give it a good condition ?

That's a beautiful color, and I bet after oxidation is completed, you'll be equally happy. I love my hennaed hair in most lights (awesome indoors and in cloudy outdoor light or gentle sun), but in very bright sun it is very bright orange. Before I hennaed, it was brown with light orange highlights in the sun. The glow in bright sunlight is quite bright for me, but I think it's worth the auburn tones in gentler light. Just like one's natural hair color, it changes with the light. And it's not fading, which is fantastic!

I posted mine in a different thread: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=2963&page=62 I think the reason my hair didn't turn out as dramatic as yours is that 1. Yours was lighter to begin with and 2. I didn't keep it on as long - I only kept it on for about 5 hours.

Next one, I think I'll keep it on longer. I'd like it darker, and I think I'll continue to use the Yemeni.

I also had (and feared) the 'glow'. But, it's gone now. I also have showered since and couldn't believe all the henna that still rinsed out.

my second application defiantly changes the spectrum - orange to red.
as for my colour it is put on top of strips of evil chemicals which makes it bright and dark strangely (black streaks are still prominent, as for my roots (2ish inches) are really rich and dark and i love them. i just need to work out in future and see if or how to merge natural and strips together. i have plenty time to see what happens in future to them. your hair will have different results to mine as it hasn't been tamped with like mine has which im very of envious of btw,. if you ever fancy a swap your very welcome :o , hay i tried. pics look lovely on the other thread btw.

Hay!

Great new photos!!! Thanks for posting. You should add the big versions to your album. You "carry off" this color great.

I will henna today!

I have finally color-corrected my 4" blonde roots with indigo last night. Check out my albums if anyone is curious.

are you naturally red? if not you should be because your result is one of the most natural looking henna's I have ever seen. It really suits your complexion. WOW!

my mums got the fair red genes in the family (half brown/golden ginger coloured hair which is fine and supper curly with pail skin with freckles) and my dad has or did till he went gray had thick jet back hair, dark eyes ect. so i've got abit of a weird combonation of both, i look like my mum but i have the dark features of my dad incuding thick hair

Rach, you look stunning!! I love looking at the photos, and agree that your roots are very rich and dark. The dark parts are my favorite!

Love the pix and the ongoing updates.

sign of the chemical dyes are almost none existent. light hair just soaked up the red and the black had faded over time anyway so the colour is balanced out .
i've reached this colour now which suits my complexion and dark eyes much better.

Rach, I'm hijacking your thread, 'cause everyone who can answer this question seems to be following it :P ....so, how long do I need to wait after a chemical dye job before slapping some henna on there.....?

If you're using 100% pure herbs, you don't need to wait. The rule of thumb is three months, but *so long as you strand test* I think you're find to go for it whenever.

Yep, exactly what she said.

My sister did it about 2 days after a particularly nasty dye job, then after several months applications of henna she used commercial dye the day after the last henna. Did not hurt her.
