I received my henna this afternoon and decided to do a strand test.I received the instructions from h4h to leave your mixture in a warm place for about 12 hrs.I am only doing about a teaspoon of henna for the strand test do I still leave it for 12 hours or can I test now I've had it sitting for 5 hrs and I can see a slight color release.

If you can see evidence of color release then you can probably go ahead and do your strand test. Try putting a dot of henna on your inner wrist for 30 seconds - if it leaves a stain then your dye is releasing. :)

I am one who does it right after it starts releasing, though, so I'm not sure what others would do.

Yeah as long as you see brown on top of the henna dye is released. Try what dearladydisdain said if you see orange on you after you rinse it off then its ready;)

I never left my henna to brew for 12 hours. I always tested it as soon as I mixed it and got stain on my skin. I would then let it sit for an hour or two and rock and roll. :D

I did my strand tests every 2 hrs to see if there was a change in color and there wasn't I even took the strands out to the sunlight to see if I could see anything and there was no change.I did another test by letting the henna sit for 12 hours and and also did several tests and no result.I ordered the pakistan henna from H4H and it is supposed to have a lower color content because since this is my 1st time using henna I was afraid to get too much color.Does anyone know if maybe this is the reason I didn't get color because I have black hair ?

Its very subtle at first it took me layers and layers of henna to get nice color Diamondbell too she has blaaack hair as well. I recommend leaving it on for 4 hours, see how that looks. 2 hours wont do much and with 4 you will get more of the conditioning properties.
