Well what helped me the most I'd say, wasn't a recipe but a way to take care of my hair. My hair never got past bsl, and after being stuck at bsl for several months to a couple of years my hair would look horribly ratty and be so dry I'd hack it off.

I learned that my hair hates the brush I was using, I also brushed from top to bottom, ripping through to get out the tangles. I also brushed on damp hair making my hair a poof ball. I now comb when it's wet just after washing, starting from the bottom and going through it gently. Then I don't touch it again until after it's dry. My hair looks and feels much better and I broke through my false terminal length.

For me, also, it's less a recipe than general haircare. The thing that really got me past BSL was the realization that I didn't have to cut it, odd as that sounds. My mother had always dragged me to the salon at that point for a cut (usually up to APL), and I'm such a creature of habit that until I came across long hair sites online, I never really thought about letting it grow longer, as much as I admired longer hair on others.

The other thing that got me to grow longer was actually breakage. I always wore a ponytail, and one day found that I had a bit chunk broken at the length of my (no-metal, quite gentle) pony holder. So I swore off all ponytail holders for 1 year, and started wearing buns. You can grow your hair much longer more easily if it's contained, and because it's not in my way, driving me crazy, I'm happy to grow it long. I can let it down to enjoy it, and I can put it back when I don't want it falling into a petri dish or a bunsen burner or a sink full of dishes.

Is it hard to get the garlic smell out of your hair?

Agreeing with the other posters...Not a recipe here either, just better hair care in general.

I wear my hair up all the time; that and better, gentler hair care.

Getting all the obvious damage cut off my ends. My hair has been growing like a weed since then with no trimming needed for the past 7 months.

In response to your question, what most helped me to grow out my hair was to stop obsessing over its length. It is so hard to do that in the early stages of growing your hair out - you keep wanting it to grow faster and faster. You keep measuring its progress. I had to stop doing that because it was driving me nuts!! There comes a time when you just need to put your hair up and forget about it for a while. If you want, you can always get long hairpieces and pretend your hair is already long. Now that my hair is long (thigh-length) I feel no more compulsion for it to grow fast. The hardest period of growth, for me, was going from shoulder length to mid-back because the hair would not stay back, but kept falling forward and looking sloppy. Once you reach mid back, you've got it made! Another thing that really helped was not to cut my hair for a special event - whatever - a party, a wedding, a graduation etc. Someone had told me, "Don't cut your hair for a special event - just GET A WIG! That is so true!! I have learned to wear a wig for times when my in-between hair length wouldn't have been appropriate. Wigs are fun and they allow you to avoid drastic mistakes!! Lastly, handling my hair gently sure helped as well as staying away from salons!! I learned to comb from the ends up. I learned to trim any split ends myself. Good luck to you! Your hair will be long in no time! Then you will no longer feel the urgency for growth!!

A combination of time, a very sensitive scalp and being lazy.

In time, any hair will grow. If you have no great damage, just put away the scissors and it will grow on its own. It's wonderful and very cheap that way!

A sensitive scalp has always prevented me from tugging at my hair and being rough while combing or brushing, since I had to choose between gentle treatment or pain. A very easy choice for me!

Being lazy has prevented me from using blow dryers, hot curlers, curling irons, straighteners, you name it. I have always air dried, not "fixing" it with all the heat tools. While air drying takes hours, you can still do lots of other things while your hair dries on its own.

My hair has always been in pretty good shape with a good growth rate, except for the years of dyeing and perming, of course. When I came to LHC, I didn't need to "save" it, but still decided to try out a couple of methods to see if my hair would like it.

So far oiling is a great success. Not to grow my hair, but to maintain and strengthen the delicate and fragile ends.

Thanks, guys, it has only been a few months and I look at all the pictures of folks with waist length hair and beyond and despair ever growing my hair that long. I do keep it up every day and it is much healthier than it has ever been so I just need to be patient which, unfortunately, is NOT one of my virtues! LOL! The rest of you inspire me...

I have also noticed that hair care is far more imortant than products. One of the biggest differences I noticed was when I stopped using a towel to wrap my wet hair in. I now wear a 100% cotton T-shirt (courtesy of DH) instead, and that alone has improved the quality of my hair seemingly over night! :cheese:

Oh yes - that's a good one. I use flannel pillowcases but sometimes t-shirts, too. Towels are too rough!

wow i never really thought about towels being rough on your hair - but it makes sense! i used to have a very soft thin cotton towel and i used it til it fell apart. now my new towel of choice is very absorbant and also very rough! i will try the cotton t-shirt idea!
thanks :)

What helped me the most was:

stopping my obsessive-compulsive touching, brushing and playing with my hair, and

wearing it in a braid or a bun 99% of the time.

And regarding products/recipes, misting and oiling the length helped a lot with breakage and splits.

I no longer comb or brush, just gently separate my hair with my hands, I use satin acetate bedding and catnip tea, the single most change to my routine, that allowed me to grow long, stronger, healthy hair, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=118

Supplements and better care. I have also heard Megatek works a treat as well as catnip tea for split ends!

Two things: taking care of my hair and time. If you can't be patient, you cant have proper long hair.

for me, before when i had it to tailbone length and now, basically it has been wearing it up in a braid or bun 99% of the time.
I only brush my hair in the mornings before braiding or bunning for work, and after washing i comb wet very gently to detangle then leave it alone to air dry until the next morning when i brush it gently and bun it for work. it has helped me alot to keep damage away and grow it healthy and shiny with little effort. i do use some special treatments like garlic in my poo, and SMT's twice a month.
besides that just bun it and forget it until morning unless it was a very windy day and my hair is completely wild, then i brush gently to tame and braid for sleep.
