I know there is a henna thread (or several) and a cassia thread, so I thought why not a henndigo thread, to show people what various mixes and ratios come out like?

I'll start, here is a 60:40 yemen henna and indigo mix (dye released the yemen overnight, mixed up the indigo and let it sit for 10min before adding to the henna and applying for 4 - 5 hours)

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u63/evie_066/myfavouritehalfup.jpg

And here is a darker tone, about 50:50 jamila henna and indigo, mixed as before:

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u63/evie_066/2007_0523Image0079-darkloose.jpg

And finally, some shots of my darkest mix to date - 40:60 henna to indigo, mixed as before and applied for about 4 - 5 hours:

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u63/evie_066/ficcarecinnibun.jpg

And my natural (if highlighted) hair colour is this

Looking forward to seeing all the lovely effects you achieve with henna and indigo!

This is my Hendigo'd hair. I do about 70-Henna/30-Indigo over naturally brown hair. I'm always amazed how different Henna can change with light. The first is with a flash, 2nd - natual light in room and 3rd - natural light, closer to the window. I'm VERY happy with Hendigo, as it isn't super red. The indigo really tones that down to an Auburn, for me.

As it were, I have Hendigo on my head right now. I haven't done an all over application since my first time. Roots only seems to work well for me and keep the color more consistant. Luckily my DH doesn't mind helping me apply to roots only. I don't think I could do it myself!:p

I just henna/indigo'd my hair this weekend. It's a tad dark, but because it's a 1-step process the indigo is washing out, ever so slightly. I think it will end up being med.-dark brown.

This weekend and then a pic. from last summer.

I'm sorry, but I just have to butt in hehe.
I did one indigo strand in my hennaed hair (kind of) long ago. I thought maybe to dye with indigo the whole bottom (nape) layer of my hair, so I tried indigo on one strand and Oh my, it just looked like a horses tail hairs stuck in my hair, so I ditched the idea. It's much prettier now though for some reason, I really like that strand peeping under the bright hennaed hair.
The picture is from right after I've done it, but it's not that good at showing the color:

Here is the "before henna" color. It was dyed brown, which promptly started fading. My avatar is a 50/50 henna-indigo with about a teaspoon of alma. It starts darker, then fades a shade to this color. I love it! I am only doing root touch ups and glosses now to maintain the color. So the photo below is the before, the picture to the left is the current color.

Lookin' lovely ladies!!! I have a question though. When you henna indigo, do you feel either the henna or the indigo fade more or less, or not at all, when you do a one-step?

These pictures are all beautiful.

Where exactly do you get the henna and the indigo? And could somebody please give me or link me to instructions? I am strongly considering doing this.

THANKS

tooqute2nv: On my hair, I can see the indigo fading a little and the henna starts showing though a tiny bit.

Here is my hair before the first henndigo:

My signature has the picture of my hair after two henndigo treatments.

Oh, I was supposed to mention the mix... I use 25% henna and 75% indigo. I mix henna with tea and let the dye release overnight and the next day I mix indigo with water and put the two together and let it stay on my hair for 3 hours.

I just love it how much healthier my hair looks :)

tooqute2nv - I find that indigo on my hair is very, very permanent! I have done the main 'one step' process most of all, and if I have ever done a 2 step version it was a full strength henna initial treatment, and then an indigo gloss (indigo mixed up, left ten min, and then added to condish before applying).

xoLegallyAubrey - I've used the following suppliers, and found them all fantastic:

Henna Sooq (http://www.hennasooq.com/)

Mehandi (http://www.mehandi.com/shop/index.html) (the shop on the Henna for Hair (http://www.hennaforhair.com/) site, an excellent resource for instructions, photos of people's results etc etc)

And in the UK:

Henna Boy (http://www.henna-boy.co.uk/)

Renaissance Henna (http://www.renaissancehenna.com//)

Other information about colouring your hair with henna and other herbs such as indigo can be found here, in Nightshade's excellent article here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=7). One word of warning, I have found dying my hair this way to be the most permanent thing I have ever known, so be very sure you want to do this before you start covering your hair in the mud!:eyebrows:

Hello LHC'ers! I have been lurking around here for a while, but this is the first time a post a comment. I thought I would never change the colour of my hair again, but after seeing your pics I am in doubt again.

Congratulations to all of you on your great hair!

Question!!! :cheese:Once you mix your henndigo together, can you still freeze the leftovers like you would with just henna?

Naava
March 3rd, 2009, 01:27 PM
^If I remember right, indigo will not work anymore after freezing. It has a very fast dye release, that's also the reason why henna paste is made first and indigo only just before using.

I do henna, and tried indigo for awhile and then went back to henna only, I originally have dark hair, anyways.

I just wanted to say you get very nice colors with the indigo, all those shades of brown and black. And everyones hair look so shiny. Very encouraging.

OMG! I just did my FIRST Henndigo last night!!:cheese:I used about 1/2 henna& 1/2 indigo. Didn't really measure, just eyeballed, using no acid, just 1 small can of coconut milk, rose water, and tap water. :D
I ordered my henna and "black henna"(indigo), from Halalco.com, and it was insanely cheap, and came in good condition.:)

I don't have enough postings to show pics, but here are some links, if you want to check it out.

Also, thank you Girltron for the idea about coconut milk, and while I didn't use it (this time!! ;)), the two-step plan of indigo FIRST, then henna. <3

Right after I finished washing out the mud pile that was on my head over-night :D : 1)inside w/flash , 2)inside w/o flash, 3) outside, 4)after about 6 hours of oxidization

Hi, this is my first comment! I've been thinking about henna, but I'm loving the results of it mixed with indigo. :D I've always used boxed color (for 12 years) and I was wondering if that would affect the results of the "henndigo". My hair is pretty dark, so I'm thinking I might try using henna and then if I need to, doing the indigo gloss. Yall look awesome girls!!

I remember reading a long time ago on the Henna thread, I think  that some people just do an indigo gloss, to build up the browner color again. Thanks!! I took another picture in outside light, but it's cloudy and rainy, so it looks much the same as it does in that pic. Normally when I brush my hair as long as I had to last nite to get the tangles out, it's VERY frizzy. Not so much this time! I'm very happy with it, although next time, I'll do half and half henna and indigo.

Thank you for the advice. Maybe I will do an Indigo gloss. I've always been a bit afraid of unadulterated indigo and have never bought it. It's a silly fear that I will overdo it and my hair will turn blue-black :p. I think it's time to give it a try because I really like my color darker.

:) Wow, all of your hair looks so good, what beautiful hair colors you made!!!! I think I would like to try it maybe.

 Do any of you cover grey?
I covered my moms gray with the same mix I used on my hair. She's about 10-15&#37; gray. It turned out very nice on her and her grays looked like really pretty brownish/red highlights. Her hair is a dark brown and I didn't really notice a change in color on the rest of her hair which was nice. If you have more than 20-25% gray I wouldn't do it because it might look a bit odd. The deposit she got on her grays was lighter than what I got (hence the highlighted effect). Of course though I've only had that experience, with repeated applications it might have darkened up.

Thank you. :flower:

I really liked the color it gave me too and I am not particularly fond of the color my hair is right now. It's too light and washes me out.

You were the second suggestion for an indigo gloss so I guess I probably should go and give it a try. :p

Eva, be sure to let the indigo oxidize before you reapply.

It took five hours for my grays to turn from white to pastel blue. I thought the indigo hadn't "taken" and I'm glad I didn't reapply more. I have medium brown hair and left it on for 25 minutes total, broken up into about 10 minutes and then another application of 15 minutes. It was diluted in egg and conditioner in about a 1:4 ratio, and left on the head with heat (under show cap) for about 5 minutes. A little bit goes a long way. I only used 3 tsp indigo powder to cover my whole crown.

Brat
March 15th, 2009, 10:23 AM
Well gosh, you guys are too kind! I have to use cones to keep it brushable, and I rarely flat iron. I brush it soaking, dripping wet, run my fingers through it once, then scruch a little with it upside down. If it's not drippy, it gets real frizzy. I have to let it air dry to get the curls defined. I've tried diffusers and towel drying, but they all equal frizz!

Well, I know I've been absent for a while, but I think (after some disasterous attempts at using just henna - yellow orange is all I can achieve and it just does NOT suit me) I am a henndigo head for good.

I have glossy red brown hair now, which I do love.

Still, I am always up for experimenting, and so I have the following on order from Renaissance Henna (http://www.renaissancehenna.com/renaissance-henna.aspx?page=productlist):

Acacia cacachu powder - to push henna towards brown, based on tannins

Morrocan Dbargh powder - to add to henna to give brick red tones

Thought all this might look good in my henndigo mix (I sometimes add other things, just to see what happens....), so will report back when I have an update!

In the meantime, has anyone else used any of these products?:)

I love hendigo, it is so good for my hair and helps it grow strong. I used to use straight henna and hendigo color is much better for my skin coloring. Add some catnip soaks and I have beautifully colored, bunny soft hair!

Do most of you that use Henna-Indigo have medium to darker hair or are there quite a few that are in the light brown range and do not want the "orange" tones that come with most henna ?

Doing some research ......

I've got naturally ashey greyish something under all of this henndigo = I wanted dark hair, with a red gleam, in the end rather than the henna red (which I did love) because it suited my skintone better

You're doing better than I am. It is frustrating not to see photos.
I currently have my hair dyed by my beautician. Does anyone know if there are any beauticians that will Henna hair? I love the gloss on all the photos I've seen and could use the thickening. I have some silvers framing my face and stray ones throughout-don't really know how much though.

I'm a klutz though and would certainly botch any self-henna-ing endeavors.

My hairstylist did my henna once, as I learned she worked with henna for decades. But if you can have a family member or a friend to color your hair, it works just as well.

I am planning my first henna/indigo soon and that is the colour I am looking to achieve. What mix/application method did you use to get this??

Evie
July 25th, 2009, 01:13 PM
Thanks so much!

I have light ashey blonde hair, and I use a mix of approx 50:50 henna to indigo - this gives me a really dark shade. I know that on some people's hair, it will give a more reddish tone, but it seems to work for me.

If it looks a bit reddish sometimes, I will do an indigo gloss, when I use about 1 tablespoon of indigo, mixed with hot water and a pinch of salt, mixed into enough conditioner to work through my hair.

I tend to leave my henndigo on for up to 4 hours, or if I'm doing an indigo gloss, I leave it on for about 20 min.

An alternative that works as well for me, is to do a 2 step - henna for about 4 hours, and then an indigo gloss, as above, but this time with 2 - 3 tablespoons of indigo, left on for about 20 min again. Sometimes indigo makes my head a bit itchy if I leave it on too long, and doing a 2 step with a gloss means I don't get black, just sort of dark chocolate cherry, which is what I want.

I'm afraid I vary my methods a bit, I'm always trying new things out.

Hope this helps, though. Let me know if I can be of any further help....

Thanks for letting me know. That really is a beautiful colour :)

I currently have chemically dyed dark brown hair and am so excited that I can achieve such a wonderful rich colour with natural dye. I'm hoping that I will never have to use chemical dye again :)

I think I am going to do a 2 step as I have about 35% very resilient grey to cover. Your method with an indigo gloss sounds appealing as I am really worried I will end up with jet black hair!! I do want to end up with dark hair though and a dark chocolate cherry colour sounds good. Is the indigo still as permanment if you use a gloss as opposed to a straight indigo application?? Also how do you deal with roots: full head or just a root application??

Thanks again for taking the time to answer :)

So if I were to do a Hendigo treatment, to darken my ends to match the rest (they are a shade or two lighter) how long should I leave it on? I don't want to end up BLACK.... just a medium cherry auburn/burgundy shade.

The only way to find out is do a strand test. Your hair will react to henna differently than anyone elses.

Well I have dreads. So I dont have hairballs from brushing to test, and can't really do a strand test, more like testing a whole read, which is kind of a pain.... thanks for the suggestion tho. I was just looking for a rough guideline, really.

Yeah, without a strand test you really can't be sure of anything, but from what I've read - if you do a one step process with about a 50/50 or 40/60 indigo/henna, you probably won't end up black. It really depends though. You may want to consider glossing the ends a few times and going gradual to the color you like, that way you don't run the risk of going too dark, too quickly.

I started with this from one application of Rainbow Medium Brown (just added red) and then one application of Rainbow Dark Brown (barely darkened, added a lot of red). It didn't always look this red, but it was not the color I was looking for.

have i got this correct. add smidge of salt. avoid acidity and don't use alma? to get the best results from pure indigo .
i'm doing a two step later on my friend because the indigo didn't hold.

i'm thinking 3 hrs of henna just to darken the shade and then 45 minutes maybe with indigo mixed with small amount of salt.
she's after a dark warm brown.

Just to let you know 45 minutes on my hair made it very black (although being my first indigo it faded a little after a few washes). I've never left indigo on more than an hour to get black.

I don't add anything to it other than water and a teaspoon of salt and use it immediately.
For brown I would only leave the indigo for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of darkening you want - Better to be too light and add more later than too dark and possibly permanent.

OK, all the gorgeous pics have made me want to try this again. I gave up my black hair dye for the health of my hair, but the amount of gray I've grown out is making me look far older than I am. I wouldn't normally mind, but my now slightly shabby look is not helping me work-wise. My question to all of you is, where have you found the most inexpensive henna/indigo that actually works for you? I've gone to the much recommended henna for hair, but based on their recommendations and prices it would cost $90 plus shipping to dye my classic+ hair. I really can't afford this every few weeks on my extremely limited budget so I'm looking for alternatives. That and do you really need 1000g of hendigo for waist length hair?

Lunaria Vex - I do not know where you came up with $90 to henna your hair. My hair is a couple inches from waist and I use 25-50 grams. I have found they greatly exagerate the amount required.

The 200 gm kit in hendigo is $15 which lasted me two complete hendigos and several root only treatments - so like 4-5 months. On classic length, it should make two applications, unless you have unusually thick hair. I dilute mine until it is the consitancy of yogurt or even thinner and glop it on. Thinner covers better, in my experience. Good luck!

Lunaria Vex
November 6th, 2009, 04:13 AM
Thank you so much, I really was hoping they were exaggerating the amounts. I got that amount from the fact they said five kits for waist length, so six kits for mine at $15 a piece:( Very very glad I don't really need that much.

Try using a root shooter for application, or a carrot bag. It takes me 10 minutes from start to finish but I do make my henna almost runny - yogurt is the consistency I am going for. I am able to henna all my roots by flipping my head upside down to get the back. The length is the last part I do and just grab handfuls of the mix and smush it in. It seems if the mixture is too thick, it is much harder to apply. And the root shooter allows you to apply directly to the scalp so it is easy to know where you have been with application. By the way, I have only used henna for hair product which may be smoother when mixed and rinses very easily.

Yay! So I washed it for the first time last night (VO5 and Suave CO mixed together) and noticed no fading or loss of the indigo! Last time I tried anything with indigo (back in 2007) it came out right away. This time I think I've got a winner--there must be enough henna in this Caca Noir bar to make the indigo stick. When I had tried indigo before, I did it by itself some weeks after doing a henna gloss.

So I'm hopeful that I am one of those people for whom the Lush Caca Noir, or henndigo one-step in general, stays in the hair for at least a while. ;)

Question for those who've switched from straight henna to henndigo- does your hair still feel as nice?

I henna mainly for the conditioning effects, but I'm considering henndigo to tone down some of the red. But I'm wondering if I'll notice a difference in how my hair feels, say after a 60/40 or 70/30 (indigo:henna) treatment. Is the indigo drying?

Sheesh, this thread is making me want to start the henndigo again, but I've been not so patiently growing out virgin. I tried a 50:50 BAQ henna and indigo in June of 08 and the indigo seemed to wash out within a week. I used to use Rainbow dark brown and got this color. It would last about a month before it lightened up enough that I needed to redo it.

I did my very first henndigo a couple of days ago and I LOVE it!! I used 2/3 PP, 1/3 indigo and a good dose of amla to cut down the orange. I slept with it on and it is an awesome dark brown right now. I even used it on my eyebrows for about an hour before bed and now my eyebrows are visible! YAY! I don't need eyebrow pencil! I'm a little bit nervous about washing it now though, after seeing so many comments about the indigo fading. I hope it doesn't fade too fast....my last henna didn't seem to take very well....I think it might be because it's over previously bleached hair:confused:

On a side note, I noticed on Thanksgiving that one of my DH aunts uses henna on her hair and we started talking about it. She said she got hers from a health food store in LIQUID form!! Anyone here ever hear of such a thing??

I'm wondering how quickly you have to get the one-step henndigo on your hair so that the indigo doesn't die before it dyes. I'm also curious if this is any different for those of you who use lush bars vs. BAQ one step.
Thanks!

Lovely pics, everyone! I'm that close to going back to dark brunette, got the henna, indigo and amla here already, but I'm too chicken to do it, because I don't want a reddish brown, but a more cool shade. Does amla really do the trick?

Not totally, no. My daughter said she could see red in my hair out in the sun. I still like it though:)

Ok, y'all have enabled me :D . I have to order more henna soon and I'm going to get some indigo as well! I'll try 50:50 first and see how I like that. I will probably eventually go to the two step henna then indigo. How black does that get? Is there still reddish tints from the henna or is it more of a blue black?

I'm newbie and haven't tried this yet. But I've read that you have to add the indigo to the henna within 10-15 minutes of mixing and use it right away. Check out the henna for hair or the henna sooq sites, they both explain the henna-indigo procedure well

You have about an hour before the indigo demises (so if you want to get the whole benefit from it, mix it up and apply immediately, then keep on for an hour).

I mix my henna the night before (with hot water and some lemon juice) and let it sit. In the morning I mix my indigo (with hot water) and then mix them together and slop it all on immediately. I only have to keep it on for an hour (because after that the indigo isn't doing anything, just the henna, and it is all I can stand to have mud on my hair) and then I rinse it out without any issues. It's pretty simple actually.

ninika, no the amla helps a little, but will not give you a neutral or ash-toned brown - it will still be a red-toned brown.

With the amla+henna+índigo you'll have a brown colour without red, you have a book information about this in the link. Here you can see the diferents colour

I did a henndigo two days ago but am not satisfied with the colour, it is too red. I love red, wanted it to turn out red, but this colour looks a bit unnatural. I used about 65/45 henna/indigo. I'm posting it here because I see a lot of chocolate-brown-ey colours, not the strange red I have now, so I'm probably doing something wrong.

So I'm thinking of doing a second henndigo, also because I missed some spots.
But now my question, I was wondering how the leave-in time will affect the colour. Does it turn a deeper shade if you leave it on a couple of hours vs. just one hour? More orangey - less orangey? Does it fade slower?
I'm asking because last time I've left it on for an hour and a half and I'm trying to decide how long I'll have to leave the mix on the secon time.

I'm bringing back this thread because on Monday I broke down and henna'd! I did a two step to get jet black, using RavennaNight's (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/blog.php? u=14960&blogcategoryid=2529) routine.

I like the outcome, though admittedly I only had less than half an inch regrowth (the rest was chemically dyed black). So I'm not real sure if the henndigo'd color is going to be as black as I like.

Inside with flash

So I liked the outcome but the time involved was a bit...much. Especially with my one year old running around.

I left the henna on for 4 hours and the indigo for 2. Do you guys think I could go for less? I keep reading different things about the indigo. Some say it demises in an hour, 90 mins, etc.

Also does anyone have any experience with these brands of henna and indigo:
http://www.indiastopshop.com/store/Hair%20and%20Skin%20Care.html (http://www.indiastopshop.com/store/Hair&#37;20and%20Skin%20Care.html)

This store is the only Indian store for twenty miles or so to my house and those are the brands they carry. It would be so much better to buy here for under $5-10 than ordering online for more than $20. (I ordered Indigo and Jamila Henna from mehandi.com, which was great quality and fast shipping but unfortunately a bit expensive for extended use)
But any input on those brands would be appreciated since I don't want to put anything crazy on my head! :D

Heidi thank you very much! I was hesitant to try black fearing it may go way too goth with my skin but I actually really like it. And if I can get it natural then even better. :)

Also thank you for the info on Hesh. I might try it or I also just found a site http://www.ayurnaturalbeauty.com/ that's cheaper (especially shipping) so I might try them as well. Especially since I'm reading that the Black Rose from the store isn't indigo but a henna dye. :(

I love the pictures in this thread! I'd been planning to buy Lush Caca Brun to even up my hennaed hair (the bits that had been synthetically dyed are more porous and look red compared with the new growth). But after seeing your pics I've got myself some indigo and henna to make my own mix.

But I'm unsure how to go about it. Could anyone help me with some questions? I hope it's ok to ask them here.

1) What's the difference between 1 and 2 step henndigo?
2) What effect does an indigo gloss give applied over old henna, and over virgin brown hair.
3) How permanent is indigo?

Thanks in advance.

To get my color, which is a very rich brunette with just a tiny bit of a red/burgundy sheen in the sun, I use 50/50 henna and indigo.

I prepare my henna with hot water and let it sit for about an hour in a warm spot, then mix my indigo with warm water and a pinch of salt, then mix them together and apply to washed and damp hair.

I leave it on for anywhere from 1-4 hours and then rinse and condition.

I never get orange tones, and even with repeated full-head applications over a year now, my ends are not too dark.

HTH!

1. Two step will get you blue/black or blackest black hair. One step will get you varying shades of brunette.

2. I'm not positive on this one. But my opinion is to stay away from using indigo alone (even in a gloss) unless you want *black* hair. If you are going for brunette, even if you use a gloss I'd add henna to the indigo.

3. As permanent as the only way to get it out is to cut it off. If you try to lighten hair that has indigo in it, you'll end up with green or fried/melted hair, as far as I know. I've researched, and I can tell you that I'll never risk putting bleach or peroxide on my hair now that I've henndigoed. Maybe someone has lightened it up with good result, but I wouldn't risk it.

Has anyone here successfully switched from conventional black dye to henndigo? I like the idea of it, but I would hate to have to dye my entire head every month because of fading!
What if I mixed henna and indigo to get a brown color, then dyed over that with pure indigo? Would the color fade less?

I didn't switch from black dye to a 2 step, but gradually switched to hennindigo from a brown chemical dye, and then decided that I am ready for a 2 step. During the first application of hennindigo the indigo part did not take. On the second application of hennindigo I had finally achieved the brown that I was expecting. Now I have switched to a 2 step henna and indigo and it fades a little still (I wash almost every day), but at some point it should stop fading at all so that I would only be touching up the roots. Indigo needs henna to stick, both stick better to clarified hair. I have no visible demarcation between the dyed parts and virgin parts.
Here are the pics of my colour:

Indigo is not permanant for me. It rinses out in a couple of months. I know of others who are the same way. I have heard two step in more permanant.

This looks pretty much like my natural color (before I hennaed). Unfortunately, it did not stick to the virgin roots; so I guess I will have to do two-step.

I must say, as much as I loved henna color(s), going back to black feels wonderful :)

Thanks! I'm no color expert, but my hair was chemically dyed when I first used the Noir and it wasn't a problem. I ground up 4 squares (a bar has 6 squares) of the bar in the food processor until it was a powder, and then I gradually added warm water until it was a smooth paste, about the consistency of thick yogurt. My hair is very thin, and using only 4 squares is cutting it close. To apply I section my hair and just gloop it on with my fingers. When that's done I pile my hair on top of my head and wrap with plastic. I leave it on for at least 4 hours -I slept with it once, but I woke up the next morning with nausea and a bad headache, so I don't do that anymore.

Hmmm....thanks for the reply! I'm considering trying this due to ease of application. Worried it won't cover my irritating grays though :( Have you found that it fades quickly?

lascuba
January 2nd, 2011, 09:58 AM
I haven't noticed much fading. It might have a bit more of a red tinge after a couple of weeks, but that's about it.

As for grays...I'm a bit "meh" about those results. The caca noir doesn't turn them brown. Some of them turn a coppery red, and others don't appear to change color, but I notice that they're not so blindingly white anymore and therefore don't stand out as much. The results are cumulative...the grays further down my length are a dark red/auburn, while they're lighter at the roots. I don't have many, though--I'm probably less than 5% gray.

And I'm not sure how easy it is to apply. Or rather, it's not that it's hard to apply, exactly, but it takes some practice to avoid making a mess. Removal, however, is a PITA. The cacas are cocoa butter based, which requires a ton of water, loads of conditioner, time, and a bit of shampoo to get it off, as well as very gentle handling to avoid shedding. The whole removal process is the reason I'm looking into mixing my own henna and indigo (and maybe amla).

Also for those of you who are experienced with this, I am looking for a dark brown color (like yours fairystar32). Right now I have about 2 in. virgin roots (dark brown), then faded med brown and bleached highlights. Would you recommend doing henna and indigo mixed? Or a 2 step with henna first then only indigo? Or a 2 step with henna first, and then henna and indigo mixed?

I always did a 1 step henna and indigo
here are my old instructions but after several full head hendigoes, I switched to henna only on the length as it was very black looking indoors and I was loving the red glow in the sun.
I only applied hendigo to the roots after that ;).

OLD INSTRUCTIONS ( hair was BSL at this time)
I began with medium brown hair and used 3 parts indigo to 1 part henna from october till feb every month.
Then from Feb have only used henna except on my parting.

I use a basic mix, tried with variations but prefer it simple and it gives the best colour.

wash hair before application with no chemicals pure shampoo and then use an ACV rinse and towel dry.

150 g henna (catherines or henna boys indian)

capful of ACV or 1/2 cup or orange juice.

nettle tea, green tea and roobis or chamomile tea stewed together to make enough liquid to mix.

tablespoon of honey just before application after dye release.

i leave on for 3-3 1/2 hours

Well, I am hoping to change to a henndigo head for the next few months (untill spring)

I actually wanted to darken my hennahead a bit in november, but just didn't find the time to do so.

Now I have a mix of henna and indigo on my head to reach a bit more auburn colour or maybe reddish brown. I'll post the result in a few days, when the henna has oxidized!

This is the color I got from HennaHut Dark Brown applied over many-many-many :) layers of henna:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_D5xc6jwT3oY/TRdkwAUl8mI/AAAAAAAABrQ/nyEhA_fDQiI/s400/12&#37;2015%2010%20018.JPG

This looks pretty much like my natural color (before I hennaed). Unfortunately, it did not stick to the virgin roots; so I guess I will have to do two-step.

I must say, as much as I loved henna color(s), going back to black feels wonderful :)

Absolutely love this picture! :inlove: Henna Hut Dark Brown has such a good PR-pic!

I have a question: My hair is naturally dark brown but I've been dyeing it red (chemically). I'm trying to go back to my natural color, and I want to dye one last time my hair brown so that the roots don't show as much. Will it work with henndigo? What does henna and indigo do on top of already chemically damaged hair? Am I better off with chemical dye and multiple moisture treatments (will do those anyway lol)? Please help.

I suspect it was the conditioner creating a barrier between the henna and indigo. Two step is usually better for black...I would do a one step with one part henna and two parts indigo..mix up the henna and let it release, then mix up the indigo and let it sit for 30 mins and mix the two together. Clarify your hair prior to this....indigo will stick better. Leave the mix on for 2 hours and then check to see if the colour is what you're after...if not, then recover the little section you tested and leave the henndigo on for longer.

If this is your first indigo application, it could be just that. Indigo works better if your hair has a few henna applications already. My first indigo did not take at all. I was CO washing at that time, so the conditioner could be a problem. Now I every time before I do my indigo, I wash with baking soda and shampoo (clear or clarifying shampoo) mixture, no conditioner and no acidic rinses. Last time I had to do indigo a few days after I did henna and it worked perfectly.

Hope I do this right....this is a pic from this past summer of my hendigo hair. My hair is over 30% grey naturally, and a nondescript dark ash blonde.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo267/lavendark373/019.jpg

My normal mix is 30% indigo to 70% Celebration henna, plus a smidge of amla. I only do root touchups with this mix, with a freshening up with henna gloss every three months on the length.

Hi Jujube - I would strongly advise you to strand test, but it should be fine to henndigo over previously chemically coloured hair. When i was doing henndigo, I started by using it over chemically dyed hair fine so I hope it would do what you wanted. It will probably make your hair very shiny too. But strand test all the way!!

I have mostly virgin medium brown hair. The picture on the right is pretty true to color:

I do like my hair color, but I would love it to be a little darker and shinier and thicker, which I think the henndigo would do. I am worried about the upkeep though. Does anyone have advice on whether to go for it or not? Thanks guys :flower:

I used caca brun when I wanted to give my dark brown hair a little depth and extra richness of colour, and it worked wonderfully. The orange of the henna doesn't show much with that one, which was perfect for me at the time. Lush henna blocks always makes my hair amazingly soft and shiny, whatever the colour I use. I would happily use them just for that. :inlove:

With Hennidigo, does the Indigo slowing fade over time exposing more of the redness of Henna, or is Indigo just as permanant as the Henna?

fairystar32
May 5th, 2011, 03:19 PM
I think it depends on the person and their hair type and how many times its been applied. I used hendigo for several months and my hair became almost black, so I switched to just henna. When I grew it out during my pregnancy 2 yrs later the last third was still very very dark, almost black, with a red sparkle in the sun..

Yay for after photos! Here it is!

So it still isn't as dark as I was hoping for, I suppose because it still reflects reddish hues with the blackish dark brown, but overall I think I am happy. I know the photo makes it look blue black, which it does in certain lights, but in person it is a range of shades from dark brown to blue black to having reddish highlights. Henna is crazy! I was looking for something to make my eyes pop, since being naturally ash medium brown (see my avatar) seems so plain on me and washes me out. I was scared but I think I am pretty happy I went all the way!

This is three straight indigo applications on a head of hair that had been VERY saturated with henna red, to the point of being bozo red inadvertently in places due to the sun bleaching my temples and forehead hair! I kept reapplying indigo without henna because any time I did even part henna my hair would light up again with orange fire like a halo from down under! The straight henna color just didn't flatter my face. I'm going to be doing henna/indigo 2 steps from here on out on my roots for touch ups now that it's evened out. Fun stuff! Amazing what these little plants are capable of...

I don't know how I haven't seen this thread before actually jumping into the middle and henndigoing. Anyway, finally I have evenly black hair too :) Two-step. It's very close to my natural color (but my hair has a tendency to have lighter ends from ears down and finally I henndigoed because this way maybe I don't need to chop several inches every year... I guess I would have tailbone length hair by now if I had known about the existence of henndigo before.)

I have been experimenting for some time with pre-mixed henndigo mixed with organic indigo. This started to darken my hair, but I wanted it darker/richer. So I decided to finally take the plunge. I have been experimenting with henna, indigo, and other herbs for a year now so I was ready. I followed RavennaNight's 2-step henndigo process. My hair color is naturally a light ashy brown with lots of natural highlights. I used about 75g yemeni henna (wow is it bright) and 100g of indigo. I left the yemeni on for about 1h30min and the indigo on for about an hour (it was late, I was exhausted). It ended up coming out darker red with some orange highlights near the front. That was not what I was looking for. So 2 days after the 2-step application, I did a deep conditioning with a variation of Fox's moisture treatment. And today (approximately 3 days later), I washed my hair thoroughly and applied about 75g of straight indigo (+ a little salt and hot water) to my completely dry hair. I left it on my hair for 2 hours, and all I have to say is WOW! I love it and it's right after application, I can't wait to see it in a couple days :). If you would like to see a pic just click on my name to see my profile and I have a large profile picture of my freshly henndigoed hair. ETA: Changed siggy to newest indigo results!

Lmao if this isn't utter ****, I don't know what it. I don't know whether I should get another box of indigo or just go over the whole thing with henna. It's ****

What was your goal?

I don't think your hair looks bad at all. I like the highlights.:)

Is your hair naturally an ashy lighter brown with natural highlights? Because it looks like some of your highlights really picked up the henna. Also, was this your first application? How did you apply? Was it a 2-step process? How long did you let it stay on your head? What was your goal color? If you can answer a couple of questions I'm sure we can help you find your goal color. Especially if you want something a bit darker and more evenly distributed.

Naturally it's dark brown, but I have henna'd it for months now. It was my first application, I was hoping for jet black, which I got in come areas but not a whole lot. I left it on for 1.5 hours

Yours did the same thing mine did the first few times...I now have black/very dark brown hair due to repeating the indigo applications until it "caught up" with the henna. I also had been adding water that was too hot to my indigo, I later learned. Third time was a charm with luke warm water. Strand test of course, but that is what worked for me. My recent after photo is in this thread and below  Don't give up, and for the record, your hair, while not the jet black you wanted, is gorgeous anyway! :D Keep in mind, that while mine looks jet blue black in this photo, in other light conditions it looks dark espresso brown still. It really is amazing how it changes color!

One indigo application over henna:

THREE indigo applications later, 1 hour each...

Aww thank you!! :) you have lovely hair yourself!!

The indigo was somewhat of an experiment for me, I always wanted black, but I'm afraid too many people would be shocked by it since it's an extreme color change from my auburn xD But I have some henna on it now because my backup plan for the indigo was trying for dark red.

@ MagicandMayham, I had a very similar experience to you and Jemoiselle. The first full 2-step henndigo, the henna took while the indigo didn't really take and I ended up faaarr too red for my liking. So like Jemoiselle said keep applying straight indigo with hot (not boiling) water (and a pinch of salt). I applied 1 more time for 2 hours and I really like my results now. A very dark brown color that is much cooler. Also, I find that if you have someone to help you, at least point out where you might have missed spots that helps with a more even application.

Alrighty, I'll definitely take that advice.

Here is my hair now after a coat of henna:

An improvement but still wanting that red shine D:

MagicandMayhem that looks very pretty! If you want it darker definitely continue with the indigo now that you have a lot of henna on your hair. You can apply indigo to dry hair as well. If you want redder perhaps look into another henna. I know there are henna's that seem to make a redder stain. I use Yemeni and it tends to make the more orange stain on my natural highlights. On darker hair it was almost pinkish red (after my first 2-step). If you're looking for that red red stain with less orange tones perhaps you'll need try another henna. I saw a thread awhile back where a girl got really red results from just one application!? If I can find the thread I'll attach a link. If anyone else knows of a henna that has a particularly strong red stain please chime in. :)

I henndigoed for the first time last night :)

before: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7860&pictureid=103160

after: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7860&pictureid=103161

I used lush caca brun. I'm happy with it, but I definitely want to go darker so I think I'll do it again in a week or two. What do you guys think?

Looks beautiful! So much shinier! It just hangs nicely in that pic and looks like it has a cherry tint. Awesome first time results!

@ Angeldance : 95% of the crown of my head is grey. I do the two step process and get great results. I can't post pics as yet, not a full member yet.

This thread is so very enabling. I really want to go buy some henna and indigo now.

To those of you doing this with naturally brown hair did it make it much much darker? I'm naturally a medium brown and just want to deepen the colour a little and tone down a few of the the lighter streaks my hair got from the sun in summer. The top of my hair is much lighter than the underneath and it bothers me.

My natural hair color is medium brown with golden highlights. I had temporary dark brown on my length. I henndigoed and my hair became dark brown after the second application of a 50/50 ratio of henna to indigo. But you do have to keep in mind that your hair will be red no matter what. My hair is dark brown alomst black looking in regular light indoors. But in the sun, it shines like a dark red tone. But it looks amazing in my opinion... if you are into any red at all. :)

lw866 That's gorgeous :)

I'm currently sitting with hendigo on my hair.... waiting, and hoping it will stick to my hair this time D: I don't know why but I've never had Any luck whatsoever to get indigo to stick, haha.

I have dark hair and posted pictures of my results a few posts up. Mine didn't get much darker with the 1 application of Lush Caca Brun that I used, but the color seemed richer to me. I am hoping to get a deeper color after another application.

I used the lush bar because it was my first time using henndigo and it didn't require mixing anything, except the hot coffee into the bar to melt it. If you're not a scaredy cat like me I think you would get a more dramatic result with 2 step henndigo.

Good luck and make sure to post pictures! :D

yes it did. My hair went darker and darker and ended up looking black. It still had a red glow in the bright sun, but looked black in most lights.

I am excited to try this. =] I'm going to see if the slightly spacey lady in the health foods store has indigo as well as henna. If she doesn't, where is good to order from online? I'm hesitant to buy henna/indigo from ebay since most sellers have no idea whether it has other things added to it.

My hair 3 days later T _ T;
I really wish the indigo would actually stick to my hair, but it looks all kinds of uneven when I'm indoors. When I go out in the sun it looks reddish brown. I kind of wanted a darker color but now I don't know what to do, haha.
