My hair seems to like virgin coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner, but I dislike the smell. Would the refined odorless thing be beneficial as well?

I hate the smell of coconut so I've never used virgin coconut oil so I can't offer a comparison, but refined coconut oil is the best oil I've ever found for moisturizing and the second best for pre shampoo treatment.

I use refined. It works great for me!

Refined seems to work well. Mine seems a bit more of a gel and less of a solid at bathroom temperature compared to my fully-coconutty oil, but it's solid down in the kitchen.

I'm sure that if your hair likes virgin coconut oil it will still like the refined version, my advice would be to try it as it's only cheap anyway and see what happens. Any oil is better than no oil if your hair takes oiling well and if you hate the smell that much then there's no point in enduring it.

I make sure to boil the oil for some time to remove smell (definitely you need to cool it down before applying).

I might be the odd ball out but I must say I've never had the same results with refined coconut oil as I'm having now with the solid stuff. I've never been a regular oil user but since discovering this I've truly fallen in love!
OTOH I'll open the jar whenever it catches my eye just to take a quick whiff so I might be a bit biased :) I hate the synthetic, too-perfumy coconut smell many products have by the way!

I bought some refined coconut oil, in the cooking oils section at Wally World. It was cheap and it has no smell that I can discern! It works fine for me (o:

I've heard of many people using the refined coconut oil with success. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. :)

Sure, and if you don't like it, you can just use it to cook with! :joy:

I accidentally bought some refined coconut oil a little while ago, and I am very pleased with the results. I haven't noticed any difference between it and virgin, except the smell and the fact that it is quite a bit cheaper. For the same price I was able to get a little more than 2x as much refined coconut oil.

Great! I'll definitely give refined oil a try (Payal80, I didn't know one could remove the smell by boiling the oil, I might try that also).

Actually, I had no idea that coconut oil could be used for cooking, I found out while searching how to use it on hair... any suggestion for a particular recipe? [sorry if I'm flooding, I'm just curious]

When I first tried coconut oil, I found that I accidentally bought the refined and was surprised to not find that sweet coconut smell when I opened the jar--I still used the refined to cook with and to put on the tips of my hair, and it worked just fine. :)
I've since been buying virgin coconut oil though--as I love the smell so much.:D
