i'm in the process of trying out different hair conditioners, etc. right now and one of the things i heard about was using olive oil as a conditioner. I was thinking that this meant actually using it in the shower after i shampoo. when i looked around google, most of the information that i found said to do a "hair treatment" which involved putting olive oil in your hair and leaving it in for 30 minutes or so, then washing it out.

i was wondering if anybody has tried this and whether i should do the hair treatment or just start using olive oil instead of my regular conditioner in the shower. also, if i do the treatment, should i still use my regular conditioner after i shampoo the oil out?

I treat olive oil as a couple-times-a-month special conditioning thing, separate from my normall shampoo and conditioner habits. After I wash it and it dries, I'll just put a few teaspoons of the oil on the ends and comb it to spread it around a bit. I don't wash it out until the next time I shower, which is usually in 3 or 4 days. And then I S&C normally.

well, i just did a hair treatment type thing where i put like a cup of olive oil on my hair, left it in or 30 minutes with a bag over my hair, then showered and shampooed. i had to shampoo like 2 times to get all of the oil out. now my hair is considerably more frizzy than if i had just shampooed and conditioned.

I use conditioner to get the olive oil out of my hair. It works!

Sometimes, I'll use a little olive oil... sometimes, I use a lot! :D

I have found this to be the case when I've tried straight oil on my hair. All the shampooing to get it out left it worse than before I put the oil on.

To the OP, have you tried using a little on the ends of your hair? Some people find that oil works best on their hair when wet, others like to use it on damp hair. Try just a few drops rubbed into your palms, and then run your hands over the ends of your hair. A lot of people like coconut oil for hair, too.

Something I like to use that I discovered on this site, Fox's Conditioning Cream:
2 parts conditioner
2 parts coconut oil
1 part shea butter
I melt the oils in the microwave, let them cool a bit and mix in the conditioner. I usually make 5 Tbsp at a time, put it in a small bottle and shake it while it comes to room temp. There are other posts about this mixture somewhere on the forum. I really like to use this cream on the ends of my hair. Sometimes I use this on my ends before I wash my hair. You could try adding some olive oil in place of some of the coconut or the shea. It probably won't have as creamy a texture, but it might be nice. If you look around, there are a lot of recipes here for homemade hair treatments. I'm sure you'll find something that works for you.

I have done olive oil treatments under my heat cap for an hour or sometimes longer. I do like the results and feel that after doing olive oil treatment followed by shampooing, conditioning and air drying my hair comes out smoother than usual.

To answer your other question I would recommend using conditioner after using the olive oil treatment. From what I know, oils can help seal in moisture but they themselves do not add moisture to your hair. For this reason I would not be so quick to replace your conditioner with olive oil.

I should think following up your olive oil treatment with a deep conditioning treatment would be nice. What I typically do and think would be most ideal is to do a deep moisture treatment with a good conditioner and then apply coconut oil (or other oil) heavily to your hair before bed and sleep with it on all night. Then in the morning shampoo and condition again.

It is also worth noting that a couple of people had mentioned olive oil has lightened their hair. Personally, I have not noticed my hair color lighten due to olive oil.

I mainly use coconut oil but have used oilve oil a few times. I also have used jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and shea butter.

I am interested in trying avocado oil or emu oil next.

I have used oil on the ends of my hair, but I've never been impressed with the results. It didn't make my hair worse, but I wasn't sure it helped, either. Good luck!

Just to post my own experience, not sure I could use olive oil as a leave in but as a pre-wash overnight oiling it works great. I find it easier to wash out than coconut. This has always puzzled me as it seems to be the opposite of most people on here :hmm:

I stopped doing the pre-wash overnight olive oil soaks for a few weeks around Christmas and my hair was displeased :( so I started again and all is fine now.

I guess you try and see what works best for you?

Same here, dear U_R, I use coconut with a bit of aloe gel and jojoba, it seems to help the greys more. The olive works better as a facial on me. Used overnight, then CO with shampoo 4 to 1 has worked wonders. Smells good overnight too.

Dear michael perhaps the shampooing is a bit much. Try cutting it with conditioner. It may take time for your hair to adjust to the stripping effect of so much shampooing.:)

That was my experience. Good Luck!

Hugs,
WD :)

A lot of people have found that instead of shampooing to get the olive oil out, applying a heavy amount of conditioner to hair before you wet it, letting it sit for a few minutes, and then rinsing helps remove the oil much better.

i personally find olive oil a lot harder to get out than coconut oil. also after i finally get it washed out my hair is very flat. but i have fine hair to begin with - so that may be why.

I love Olive Oil treatments (pre-shampoo) for my hair!

Honestly, they do more for my hair than any bought hair mask (much as I love the smell of some of those!).

Strong, silky hair afterwards... ;)

About once a month we olive oil (scalp & length), leaving on while showering, then non-sulphate shampoo, and no-cone condition (VO5).

Always have nice results. Next day on dry hair, we use a bit of Monoi Oil.

Best Wishes! :blossom:

Yes, I love olive oil. You only need to use a small amout and I use it before shampooing. If you use alot of oil it can be hard to shampoo out.

xeternalsilence, I like the tip about using conditioner to remove the oil, I will try this!

Yes, I agree that you only need a small amount to massage through length and scalp. I would say I only use several teaspoons at most. Just keep massaging it through, and you'll find it goes a long way...

I also often add several drops of EO to my EVOO hair mix.

Iīve used olive oil over the years and I allways use a little bit in my henna mix. What I donīt like is that my pillow looks greasy if I use it over night. This doesnīt happen to me with coco nut oil+the olive oil has a stronger scent wich I donīt like.
