Is it okay to just use shikakai as a wash? On my last wash I had oiled my scalp with castor and almond oil the night before. I washed with Heenara hair wash and it did not take all the oil out. Later I did a wash with just shikakai and it took it all out. I just oiled my scalp again tonight and was thinking I would just wash with shikakai tomorrow morning. Anyone else just wash with shakakai? It seems to always be mixed with other herbs.

I've washed with just shikakai. I've that it works better mixed with something else, especially aritha, but it can be used alone. I have also found that a heavy oiling takes to herbal washes to get out.

Yes it works on its own its used alot that way. The other herbs people put in is just for added benefits of other herbs. It is just like shampoo but this is powder and mixed with water thats all. you can use it anytime you would use regular shampoo.

Thanks for the replies, I really like the shikakai on its own.

I've used it alone before. I find it a little drying and like to mix it with conditioner or amla. Otherwise it works great by itself. Makes me sneeze though...

I get mine at the local Indian store. They usually have henna, amla and aritha too.

Hello! I've have been learning so much from this wonderful forum. I'm really happy that I found it. I went to my local Indian store and bought a Hesh shikakai box. I opened it today to find it to be solid and rock hard. I decided to try and break it up with a small hammer and the little bag burst. I've never smelled shikakai before but it was really pungent that it made my nose run. I was wondering if maybe it was an old box or is that the way it's supposed to smell? it was also a deep red rust color. I transferred the contents into a zip lock bag. The expiration date seems to have worn off on the side of the box so I cannot tell if it's expired. I just wanted to ask before I put it on my scalp.

I bought Hesh Shikakai Powder online, and it is a fairly smooth, free-flowing powder. The smell is a sharp herbal to me, but not so pungent to make my nose run, lol...I think you may have a very ancient box, but maybe it still has the good properties intact? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will answer...
