I know this has probably been answered infinityx3 times but seeing as I am damn near computer illiterate and am absolutely retarded with the search function please be gentle with me :o
I have very fine dark brown/black hair and after ruining my hair with chemical dyes for 8 years i am very interested in henna.
so if any natural dark brunette-turned-hennaheads can give me a ballpark of the reddest color i can hope to achieve it would be much appreciated. I'd hate to spend a few hours with smelly mud on my head just to end up shaking my fist at the sky

Well, I think you cannot get any lighter with henna, with the exception, that in the sun your hair will probably glow pretty reddish.

You'll think your hair hasn't changed colour at all, then suddenly you'll see a picture of it in strong light or sunlight and it will be RED! But your loved ones will still think of you as having black hair. Henna will give you things which aren't really highlights, more a kind of red iridesence, or may, depending on the mix, go burgundy.

I have VERY dark brown hair and I henna. My hair is exactly how Kuchen described it.

On my very dark brown hair, henna gave an orange-red sheen that is less visible in weak light but actually appears lighter and more orange-red in brighter light, and really firing in direct light.

My hair isn't dark brown, but it it's a medium brown and with a cassia/henna blend I can give it the optical illusion of looking lighter.
I imagine your hair is like my sister's though. Here's a pic of her naturally dark brown hair with henna (I did the hairstyle on her for her graduation) :)

And in indirect sunlight:

If you henna over chemically dyed hair, your color might turn out a brightest red than if you henna over natural dark brown hair.

If it's dyed darker (you didn't specify) the dark parts will not look as red as the virgin hair, so beware if you have dyed darker lengths and virgin roots, it will make the color difference more noticeable.

I've been hennaing my darkbrown-black hair for a couple of months now and I think it actually looks lighter now than it did without the henna. You can check my album for comparison.

If nothing else, I would say chances are very good it would have some conditioning effects on your hair, so it is probably worth a try regardless.
As a side note, some of my hair is very dark brown so you can see the color I get.

My hair is all natural atm.

I'm seeing some very beautiful hair here:)...and i think i may be just about ready to take the plunge:D
as burns_erin said the conditioning effects alone seem like reason enough to give it a try
