What would happen if I got some henna, mixed it up, applied it straight to my hair, waited 30 minutes, and rinsed? That's not long enough for the dye to release, so would it affect my color? The reason I'm asking is because I'm curious if henna can be used just for conditioning. Thanks in advance. :)

I tried to mix it with conditioner once, and I got almost no color change (and that was after letting the dye release overnight with lemon juice). I think the conditioner was too oily to let the henna bond with the keratin. I think that's the idea of a henna gloss.

What if you let the dye release and then allowed it to demise, then mixed it with conditioner? Would it still do any conditioning to your hair? has anyone tried that?

Dye release can be almost immediate, depending on the conditions. Dye demise can take days. (Nightshade ran some experiments on this, I think.) If you absolutely don't want a color change, you'll probably want to avoid henna. You might look into cassia, which some find conditioning.

Yeah, I want to do cassia but the reason I asked this was because I already have some henna unused, and thought it might be better to see what I could do with it instead of buying cassia but I think I'll probably end up buying the cassia and using the henna for tinting my skin or something lol. My cosmetology teacher told me to do that. :)

If you leave it on for only 30mins it really wont do much for conditioning. With henna its the longer its in the hairs the better it is. Sorry I tried 40 mins to an hour and it never gave me the results I get from say 4 to 10 hours of henna on my hairs.

I've had immediate dye release with water...

You'd get tint would be my guess.

You could try to swap your henna for cassia on the Swap Board.

I agree with with what the others have said, I wouldn't risk it. What color is your hair? If its light I really wouldn't risk it, if its dark then MAYBE I would, at least the color would not be as noticeable (maybe).

Unless your willing to risk possible hair color change don't use henna. You could try and swap it here or you could keep it and use it on your skin!

It's my understanding that it IS the dye molecules in the henna that provide the condition that many people get with henna, so it makes no sense to apply unrealesed henna to the hair for such a short amount of time. It's a waste of henna, essentially.

Additionally, as others have said, it may also add a touch of orange color to your hair.

As PhysicsChick above so wisely said, go with cassia.

Even if you mix and apply it right away if you leave it on long enough to actually get the conditioning benefits your body heat will be enough to trigger dye release.

Stick to cassia if you don't want color :)

I've gotten a quite noticeable orange tint from a henna gloss left on for about 45 minutes, on my light brown hair.

10 hours of henna with all your hair? Wow you must have a neck of steel! After 4 hours i'm wishing i'd not bothered.

Hindi movies and henna do go together quite well! My last henna was spent watching Bunty aur Bubli and eating goat vindaloo (yummy!). Was a good day.
