I was just wondering about avocado oil (not sure if there is already a thread on this). I'm interested in trying it but I don't seem to hear alot about it. Has anyone used it? Would you recommend it? I haven't bought any yet but wanted to know if it's worth while as I already use olive oil and I won't bother buying any avocado if it is no better.

Thanks!

EVOO doesn't work for me but I love avocado oil for my hair. My hair is wavy and thick so often frizzes. I now use avocado oil mixed with water and some EOs for my misting spray and it keeps my hair shiny and soft for my 2-4 days after CO washing.

I don't know what kind of hair you have, but when my hair was dyed darker with conventional hair dyes, oils made the color fade a little.

Edit. I have no idea how I managed to write this into a wrong threat. Sorry

I've found avocado oil to be similar to macadamia nut oil and sweet almond oils. I think it's a bit lighter than EVOO but heavier than camellia oil. I've used avocado oil on my face and hair and liked it. I think I found it in the food section at Whole Foods.

I use it regularly and love it. Coconut oil doesn't do much for my hair, and olive oil can be heavy. Avocado oil makes it shinier and gives it slip. YMMV, but you can always buy a small amount and try it :) If you don't like it, hey, cook with it!

My skin loves it, in my hair i used it for heavy oilings and found it quite strengthening. It's definately worth trying.....i used cold pressed virgin avocado oil, if that helps.

Yes, I use avocado oil and I like it better then any other oils that I have tried. I use a drop when my hair is wet and do a full length oiling before I wash. I think it has helped my ends stay nice and moisturized.

I got potato chips on sale at the organic market that were fried in Avocado Oil. Really yummy!

The results are in: very soft shiny hair!!

Not as nice as other oils used to be, but maybe after a few it'll get even nicer.

So which will win, the vile smell or the great results? :luke:
Maybe if i add some rosemary EO that'll help

in other news, the ponytale circumference at base of my neck is 4 inches!! Maybe it's leftover molasses:cheese:

I used a bottle of it very happily before reading on the BeautyBrains site that avocado and coconut oil are the ones that penetrate the hair. I found it at my local grocery store, but it was the last bottle and I haven't been able to find it since. I'm away this week and finding a bottle of it is one of my priorities. Otherwise, I'll be ordering it online.

I love avocado oil. I put a little bit after I wash and braid it at night, usually my hair has absorbed it all by morning. It does not weigh down my hair and works wonderfully with pre-wash heavy oilings.

I started using it because coconut oil doesn't really work for me (maybe because I started using it in the winters). But if coconut oil works for you, it probably is cheaper than avocado oil. I use cold pressed avocado oil from whole foods.

This stuff is awesome. It seems to work a s good detangler for me, and I gained about a half inch of thickness when I used it for several months. It even makes my dry ends feel better. I use it at least a couple of times a week on damp hair for an overnight oiling and lately for a post shower light oiling since coconut oil stopped working. One thing I have noticed is that the food grade oil works way better than the cosmetic grade oil. I think they refine out all the good properties in the cosmetic oils. The one I use is Olivado.

I use avocado oil.

I have not tried EVOO or almond oil on my hair, but I have compared to others as sesame, rice bran, joyoba, coconut, chinese camellia.

Avocado seems best of these, sesame on second place. It seems to vary which of these is best, but I can blend them. (Rice bran is good too, and do not smell at all.)

Problem with avocado oil is the awful smell. If I don't get all the oils out, I have that awful smell for a week ahead. Other than that avocado oil seems to be wonderful for hair.

If this is the one you got - http://www.mexgrocer.com/87326.html - then it appears it may be cosmetic.

I have found the darker green oil to be better than the paler ones, if that helps. This is the one I use - http://www.olivado.com/avocadooil.htm For anyone who lives around a Harris Teeter, I think they sell it there.

I love avocado oil! I bought from this beautiful french site, you guys probably already jknow it, http://www.aroma-zone.fr/aroma/accueil_fra.asp
the oil is very nourishing, so I wouldn't suggest it for leave in, but the effect is visible, and it's perfect as a face moisturizzer, too! aaand...it smells like guacamole. love it!

An inch and a half of thickness? That's fantastic! The description you give of your use seems to be mostly on the length so was it a reduction in breakage that gave the increase or were you using it on your scalp for those months? I have a bottle of this and was thinking of using it for heavy pre-wash oilings again.

1/2 inch, not 1 1/2, sorry if it was confusing. :( I think I used it on my scalp a couple of times, but back then I did a heavy oiling on damp hair every night (using distilled water in a spray bottle to dampen hair and then oil) and CWC every morning to get it out. I think that the oil seemed to thicken the hair strands, although it could be coincidence. Now I have more normal than fine strands and the majority of the fine strands are in the middle of my hair in the areas that don't get as much oil (the top, sides, and underneath get the most the way I oil.) There was definitely a reduction in breakage as well, and a lot less tangles.

At my length, I use 1/4 - 1/2 cup of oil for each oiling session (1 palmful for each side, 1 for the back, and 1 for the ends and the top canopy.) This past week I have not touched my coconut oil and have used avocado for my post wash light oilings as well as a couple of heavy oilings and the hair feels so much better.

I got my nice big bottle of food grade avocado oil, did an oiling overnight, used a nice thick conditioner after soap nuts and

once again I can't get it out :justy:

I hate the feeling of oil on my hair, especially since it looks so yucky, but other than conditioning and shampooing, I don't know hot to get it out. Lighter oilings just don't have good results for me. Ideas anyone?

Has anyone tried diluting oil in distilled water and putting it in a mister?

Try lathering a few more times with your soapnuts(if they're anything like shampoo bars). That generally gets more oil out. Also, try applying less. I've never tried misting it onto my hair, seems like it might cause frizz in my hair(mists generally do that). Also, CO washing is supposed to be great for getting excessive oil out. It has worked for me, but I love my alaffia for getting excessive oil out.

Funny you should mention... I just used a big dollop of Alaffia :D I'll try your suggestions, thanks!

No problem! Alaffia is a great conditioner, and you probably don't need a ton of oil with it. This is coming from someone with VERY dry hair. Maybe two or so lathers with the shampoo they make, to get the oil mostly out.

You know their shampoo didn't agree with me, I find most shampoos very drying. And my favorite is their shea honey condish, but this time I picked up the coconut one because that's all that was there. Maybe next time I'll shampoo tiwce :cheese:

What temperature water do you use to wash? I find that if I use cool or cold water, I can't get the oil out of my hair. If I use hot water (stings scalp slightly), there is no problem getting the oil out. At the end of my shower I do a cool rinse on the hair with distilled water, but at that point the oil is out.

Yep it is a soap, like soap bars, so it doesn't agree with everyone's hair. A gentle detergent is what works well for many people. I love the shea honey line, very moisturizing! The shampoo is weird till you let the conditioner sink in or do a vinegar rinse. Then it works very well!

Hi! If you ever read the back of expensive conditioners and deep treatments, they ALWAYS contain some form of avocado. It may be avocado oil, butter, or lipids. Avocados have a high percentage of oleic and linoleic fatty acids which the hair loves. Of course, other ols have these too. However, this goes to show you how beneficial avocado oil is for your hair.

I'm planning to place an order at aroma-zone and try their avocado oil. I think the one I'm using now is not so good... I find it has a weird texture, I don't feel like it penetrates at all and the scent is funny, nothing to do with avocados or guacamole.
Have you tried their monoi oil and vanilla oil? I'm considering buy these too (the vanilla one for skin I guess).

I did that a year or more ago. I didn't use it that long because I was warned by someone here about the relatively high oil content and its being airborne and concerns about breathing it. I didn't need the agro when I already have allergic asthma so I dropped it. I can't remember what the results were like, though.
