Ok, so I left coconut oil in my hair over night on Tuesday and washed it out thismorning.
My friend today commented my hair looked WAY lighter than the day before, which I really don't want.
I didn't notice any lightening until she said that, now I'm not sure if I'm just paranoid or not!
So, my question is can coconut oil lighten hair in ANY way :(??

The only lightening I've noticed from Coconut oil is from increased shine. If anything it makes my hair darker due to more moisture.

Yeah, I haven't had any lightening yet. Coconut oil has been so good to my hair!

It can if it is mixed with water in a lightening recipe but not very much on its own and not the way that you are using it IMO.

Maybe it's just because it was shinier???

I've never heard of coconut oil doing that. Honey can lighten hair, though.

Yeah, I know honey can. And I've never used coconut oil with water.
I'm probably just paranoid hah.
Thanks for all the replies :)!

sounds like you've got a heck of a lot of shine going on!

I don't know what kind of hair you have, but when my hair was dyed darker with conventional hair dyes, oils made the color fade a little.

I've never used dyes, so I don't think this would affect me.
and Fencai, thankyou :)!

Hmm...Do you know what the recipe/directions are for this lightening recipe?
I'm just wondering if coconut oil and water are mixed to lighten then couldn't putting coconut oil on wet hair also lighten?
Thanks!

Huh, funny you say that..
I did an overnight coconut oilling, really rubbed it in and when I rinsed it out in the morning before the CO a load of dark grittish looking residue came with it and everyone commented that day that my hair looked lighter :) Possible you had a similar affect? :p

Maybe, CrystalStar.
I'm not sure, next time I try it I'll be sure to take more notice :)

i love VCO. one of my favorite things to do when my hair is dry is to massage a lot of VCO all over my scalp and hair and leave it in at least overnight. then i take a wet towel and microwave it til it is hot and steam my hair 3 times. after that i do a water only wash. my hair is still oily after this and i need to do it for about 3 days in a row (water only) for all of the oil to wash out - but when i finally get it out my hair is very clean and shiny and thick feeling! i just wish i wasn't too lazy to do this more often!
it doesn't seem to make my hair any lighter - actually it seems to darken my hair and make my silver hairs look darker too. when i do this once a week or so - my bf asked me if i had colored my hair - and if not - why couldn't he see my grey hair!~!!

Yes, mine is blonde and tends to be made darker by coconut oil.

Would coconut oil fade my chemical red highlights? I only wash my hair once a week to avoid my red fading. But my hair still lacks moisture.
