I decided to start a new thread for this as my recent one about my hair being dark won't give people notice because I can't change the thread title. This one is to specifically show that I achieved my mini-goal of lightening my under layer, which started off quite dark - a very dark auburn tending toward some wine coloring, a bit.
Given the recent successful experiments by Nightshade using Sun-In and also Okisama lightening her henna using a 30 volume developer, I was heartened to accomplish lightening of my under canopy.
My first attempt was with 30 volume diluted 1:1 w/RO/DI water on pre-oiled hair (coconut/shea butter). While Okisama did a second application after the first dried w/1:10 and then re-dried, I opted to apply straight developer because I did not see much happening. Of course, I used warm heat and feel that was the mistake. For this to work, high heat must be used. So, the result was a bit of lightening but not quite what I wanted because I could still see the darkness.
Consequently, I did test my hair to ensure that I did not receive any damage from my first attempt. I have none to speak of anywhere on my head but it's a good rule to verify. Please always do strand tests to protect your hair and possible damage.
My second and last attempt was as follows:
-Preoiled hair liberally w/a mix of coconut, argan and avocado oils; allowed to absorb for 1.5 hours
-Applied 40 volume developer diluted 3:1 w/RO/DI water. Just to be clear, the 3 is developer, 1 is water.
-Dried on high/hot heat w/blow dryer until barely damp
-Rinsed very well with cool/lukewarm water
-CO washed entire head
-Final ACV rinse; followed up with clear rinse (repeat so very well rinsed)
-Apply Fox's Sheabutter leave-in
-Light mist of my refresher that is: water, avocado oil and EOs
Result: FANTASTIC. I am absolutely thrilled! My hair is now much more blended where before, the deliniation was obvious and drove me nuts. I still have color variations but as Twilight pointed out, it makes for a more natural look and I agree. As an aside, I am LOVING the bright color I have as well as the stupid shine. Of course, this is visible dependant on the light source but it has definitely gotten to the crazy zone shine-wise. :) I think this is due to the henna/cassia gloss w/yoghurt as well as a yoghurt/honey treatment I did on the top while the gloss was percolating. ;)
Full length after results. You can see on the bottom of pic #2, the now slight variation of the under layer. Pic #1 is before (but after treatment one; it is on low flash so not a true color though you can clearly see the difference between my layers):

Close-ups of the under layer, which is now much, much brighter! Pic #1, as above, is after treatment one and on a low flash. Pic #3 is the truest color representation due to the wild shine in #2 from the flash. In any event, you can now see how well the layers blend compared to before.
