I am looking at shampoo bars again and I am wondering if I really NEED to use a vinegar rinse after each wash or will my conditioner (Terax) restore the proper pH??
I have no idea and really did not like using vinegar as no matter what I did, the smell DID linger and it was noticed by co-workers .
I know I can use citric acid as a rinse but I can't remember the dilution, can anyone remind me?
Off to have a look at the CV site again ;)

I use bars and ACV pretty much exclusively but I'll say you certainly don't NEED to use the vinegar rinse after a bar, any mildly acidic rinse should do - what dilution were you using? It really surprises me that the vinegar smell didn't go away, and I use a 50-50 (yeah I know that's super strong) water-vinegar mix and my fiance can't smell it after I get out of the shower. Were you rinsing with water after you used the vinegar rinse? I'm not sure about the dilution for citric acid since I've never personally used that, but you can always start with, say, 1/2 ts per 16 oz of water and go up or down from there (a 'standard' dilution may not prove the most effective for you anyway). As for your conditioner being sufficient for balancing pH, I have no idea since I've never heard of that kind, and I've never been good at assessing store-bought products anyway cause my hair has hated them all. (I make EVERYTHING I use, one way or another). HTH :)

Yeah, I use 1/4 tsp of either citric acid or vit c crystal to 16-20 oz of water (cold water). My choice to seal cuticle tight. When you pour it on hair suddenly gets silky smooth. I pour away from my body (if your hair isn't that long use warm water).

did you try distilled white vinegar? It worked for me. ACV left a very strong smell.

I also like Dr Bronner's Citrus Hair Rinse. It's a concentrate that you dilute in water. It contains citric acid and essential oils and *other stuff*

Yep, I tried lots of different vinegars and they ALL made my hair smell awful, it got embarassing at work when people were going round commenting about the pong all day
I rinsed it for ages too!!

For a long time I only used conditioner after shampoo bars and I had no issues. Of course, I can't really know what was going on with my cuticles :).

Did you dilute the vinegar? I've never used it straight, and I always rinse it out, and never had a problem with it smelling afterward.

Then again, years ago I tried vinegar on my 'pits and was told there would be no after smell and there definitely was (but that was unrinsed).

i like that stuff quite a lot too, actually. i use it every now and then when i'm feeling frisky and want to change the ACV routine.

Do you mean a shampoo bar like a Prairieland Herb [heart of Iowa] poo bar? I never use vinegar after it myself and my hair and scalp seem fine.

I certainly diluted the vinegar! I can't imagine being able to leave the house due to the stink if I had not!!!
I tried various dilutions and ALWAYS rinsed for ages after but the smell hung about all the time!
