What's the best way to do roots?

I need to do my roots. I have let it go too long due to having pneumonia. I need to know the best way to do a root application. I remember seeing somewhere that someone separates into 4 braids and does it that way, but I can't find that post anywhere. And I am not sure what to do with the length of the braids after applying to just the roots. My hair is now at thigh length. How do you'all do your roots? Thanks!

Something like this (http://www.mehandi.com/shop/shooter/) could also be a good Idea, instead of a bottle.
I also remember people making their henna in a plastic sandwich bad (if I'm not mistaken) and cut the corner off.
