View Full Version : To part or not?

So, do you part your hair? If so, why, and if not, why not? Does parting depend on hair type (1s likely to part, 4s less so)?

Please mention your hair type, too.

I'm a "straight wavy" - just on the border between straight and wavy. I've been ignoring or discouraging my part lately in an effort to stop my hair from lying flat just at the baldest spot on the back of my head - the spiral where the hair grows, makes me look like a monk. It's not easy, because 1) I have bangs so they need to be separated out and 2) I was somehow raised with the idea that "hair has a part" but have been questioning this lately.

I find a part on the top of my head easy to manage, but with my really wavy/semi curly hair I have a hard time creating "clean" parts in the back of my head for things like braids and pony tails. I usually have a part slightly off center because that is how my head wants it, lol!

I have straight hair and I part it. Why? Simply because I've always had that part, and it's impossible to get rid of. At one time I tried bangs, and they of course had the part too, and where all over the place.

I can brush my hair back and then put it up without a part, but as soon as it's down, there's the part again.

I'm a wavy, and I usually have a part whether I want one or not. Like Miss Murphy I can slick it back into a pony or a bun, but as soon as that is released it flops back into a part. I do try to mix it up, switch sides, to avoid the reverse widow's peak, but it is always there.

I have a part because I have it as long as I can remember, so I think it won't go away anymore even if I tried. I sometimes don't like it because it makes it extremely difficult to do high buns or high ponytails, which I almost never do because it hurts my head. I am totally not used to them because I always used to wear my hair loose or in a low ponytail. I'm also not used to the look of my face with unparted hair and I'm not sure if I like it.

this is very interesting!

In my new sig pic (which might not be working) I had WO washed my hair the night before, slept on it wet, then deliberately NOT parted it - this gives me more volume and I think suits my face better. I don't really have a natural part except for the "monk spot" in the back.

I'm a wavy and I don't part my hair,it parts by itself from the middle. I've had a natural middle part since I can remember so I leave it that way.
I chose the party option  couldn't resist

My hair is slightly wavy and naturally parted in the middle. My part is so assertive that if I so much as try to straighten it, it gets all poofy and rebellious.

My hair is slighly wavy, but still in the * 1 * catagory so I chose the first option.

I part my hair for several reasons. First off, I have a widows peak that gets pulled very painfully if I try any updos with my hair unparted. Secondly, I have a very broad, very high forehead, and I excessivly dislike the way I look with my hair pulled straight back... I keep it parted to the side, and sweep it across my forehead to help disguise it.

I'm a wavy and I do part my hair. I do try to alternate one side to the other though.

My hair just doesn't seem to do right without a part. That, and it feels weird

When I was a teenager, I read about changing your style by changing your part in Seventeen Magazine, and ever since then I've moved my part all around. These days I'm more likely to use gelled fingers to push my hair in one direction or another, and there's no particular part. I'm not really fond of the look of a straight slash of scalp showing on myself.

I voted for 'sort of', because I don't part my hair - it parts itself, bang in the middle. I don't like that, so I either comb everything back, or part (just with fingers, I hate the perfect line on myself) low on the side.

I'm 1c/2a, and my part or lack of one may be different on any given day. I frequently have a part, but I'm not set on any particular place. Usually one side or another or combed straight back less frequently.

birdiefu
March 27th, 2008, 08:35 AM
I'm a wavy that doesn't part. I usually wear my hair up with it combed straight back. When my hair is down, it just sorta goes where it wants with no particular 'part' used all the time. So if I happened to comb it back with more hair weight on the right, it will fall that way with a left 'part'.

Any part that happens on my head isn't straight and even- say the first 1/2" will be together, then a different small section (close to the first but not in line with it) will part, and so on. When my hair is down I will often flip the front bits back out of my way, so the 'part' changes locations all the time. I like not having my hair set in it's ways, except when I want to do a style that requires a straight part (like two braids) and its hard to get it straight. But I don't do that often.

My hair is straight, and I don't part it. The only time I would is if I would do a two part style - like Cindy Brady braids or something, and I haven't done that since I was in my 20's!

I hate the look of my scalp - it's so white and I have dark auburn hair. Plus, when I am close to needing to color again, if I had a part all my gray ends would show. I wear my hair down maybe once a year, so it's kind of a non-issue anyway. All my styles pull my hair directly back from my eyebrow-length bangs, that's probably another reason for me not to have a part.

I'm a wurly-haired gal... I part because my mother taught me to when I was younger (and my hair was straighter), and... my hair doesn't NOT part, these days. I suppose with a lot of work I could train it not to, but that would honestly be more work... :P

I part my hair in a variety of ways because it helps with adding volume to my fine hair.

My part is very stubborn though and reeeeally wants to be slightly left of centre, but I can get it to stay in other places with a bit of coercion (changing the part when wet or damp and smoothing it down occasionally).

No matter what I do, though, I can't seem to have no parting at all.

I can't remember ever deliberately parting my hair. It kind of does it all on its own. And not always on the same place. But it's pulled back and in a bun most of the time (well for several months so far and several moret to come) so there's no part showing at all.

I don't part it. I have no natural part, and parting is pointless because it just won't stay. I used to part it and use tons of hairspray on the part, but even then it didn't last very long. Brush it once and it's gone. I have straight-to-wavy hair.

I'm a 3b curly and I part...or something like that. I part to the side-ish by choice but not sure if it was always like that. I've tried removing the part but I haven't been able to for two reasons: 1) I'm not too convinced I look good with no part and 2) it tends to part back anyway.

my part is not straight its usually a curve...it starts on the side and curves (a C curve not an s curve)toward the middleas it reaches the back of my head... i cant really part my hair in the middle because of my widows peak... my hair refuses to stay parted on the other side... its hard for me to get even pigtails because.. even if i get most of my hair parted in the middle my bangs dont want to devide the widows peak

i chose i sort of part my hair,
cause when it is up i can go with out a part but when i do put a part it it is no more than an inch and a half deep.
i have curly hair, but it is a weird mix of like super curly, mildly curly and wavy.
i also have bangs but they are side bangs, aka grown out bangs so i am forced to wear a part because they are to short to brush back but to long to wear foreward.

I have straight, 27 inch hair that I part on the right side after I wash it. It's shows the better side of my face, and when I used to pull it straight back, I was losing some hairline and my hair was breaking. I used to part it on the other side when I had short hair, to get better volume and to take advantage of a cowlick. The part goes halfway back, then I brush the crown back because I like height at the crown. I don't really have bangs, per say. I wear it up or down with a side part.

If I don't part it wet, I get craziness.

I'm a wavy/bordering on curly.
My hair naturally parts in the middle, but I often do a diagonal parting from off-centre right back to the middle just to be different. It usually stays where it is put until hair is washed or brushed straight back.
I have no part when wearing buns, hair is brushed back.

I don't have a choice-- my hair naturally parts no matter what I do. It tends towards center, but if I move the part to one side before I turbie it, it will *generally* stay where I put it.
I wouldn't minde going partless, but I just don't think it'll happen. Generally, if I try and put my hair straight back, I get a really sore scalp. It's not worth it.

My hair is straight to slightly wavy and I voted for “kind of part” since it tends to part on its own half the time. If it is longer, I actually look better with it parted in the middle, but at its current length it looks better parted at the side. I pick the side depending is I want my white streak to show or not.

I'm a curly and I part, mainly because my hair will part itself and look weird if I don't decide for it - once it's dry I can't really fix it without totally shredding the curls.

Before I learned about taking care of hair, I consistently parted on the left and blow-fried it straight(ish). Now that I'm paying more attention to my hair, I've discovered that I have a natural part on the right. Sometimes I let it fall there or straighten out the part a bit so it looks cleaner.

Other times I'll do a 2" part on the left and comb the rest straight back so there's no part in the back.

I usually part my hair on the left side, sometimes on a diagonal or with my bangs parted on the left side and the rest of my hair parted in the middle. Whenever I part on the right side, the little baby hairs stick up funny, and if I don't part it, it parts just left of the center with a couple bangs determined to go the wrong way.

I 'sort of' part. I rarely comb through or really disturb the hair at my scalp in any way, so it stays parted in basically the same spot (way to the left) for weeks at a time. My 'natural' part (there are about five sections of it, it seems) is in the middle, but I look like a monster with center-parted hair. I do move my part around some occaisionally, but it's been on the far left or mostly so for years.

When I do an updo I never pull my hair straight back.. straight? Hah! It's not even possible. I always work with my existing part.

I "sort of part" my hair. It more depends on the style for the day. Most buns, I comb my hair straight back. For braids I usually part but there are times I do like when I bun. I do try to vary my part or just let it fall naturally (comb hair straight back when wet and let it do).

With my cury hair I never "part" it unless I'm pulling it back for something. If I'm wearing my hair down I flip it from side to side until it dries, so it can find a natural way to place itself and I'm not forcing it to go somewhere it doesn't want to.

I'm a wavy that lets her hair fall naturally into a part. I don't have a permanent part, but my hair will gradually work itself into a new one after I wash it. Sometimes I neaten it up by moving stray hairs onto the "correct" side so that it isn't so zigzag. But, I kind of like the look of a part that isn't super straight.

However, I only let it part when I wear my hair down. When I do updos, I don't part.

My hair naturally parts itself down the middle. It's straight. I usually try to part it off to the side, in a manner that will hide my widow's peak. It just seems to suit my face better to part in this way, as the "down the middle" part makes my face look rather long and plain. I just try to hide the peak because it looks a little odd sitting there, without a part with it.

My hair naturally split down the middle when I was younger, but I trained it to part towards the right, now I'm wishing I had done it to the left. :p

My natural part is definitely on the left side of my head but I trained it to fall in the center. Now it falls into either the center or the left, which gets put back to center again, haha. I have this little swirly spot on my head where the hair grows in a spiral counterclockwise direction at the back of my original left part and it bugs when I want to do really nice updos because it will make bumps. Annoying!

I'm a wavy, and I part, on my right side.. it's my natural part. on the left looks weird because of my cowlick. sometimes I part in the middle, but do so only for a shot while, just to change

I'm a wavy and I don't intentionally part my hair, but it likes to part on it's own. I just let it part wherever it wants to and it is usually kind of at an angle from the left to the middle if that makes sense.

I've been trying for years to train my hair... it's just starting to "remember" where I put it last time.. finally!
