View Full Version : Monistat... dare we start this again
wintersun99 April 21st, 2008, 09:34 AM another consideration: does 2% vs 4% and name-brand vs generic play a role in ultimate results?
I don't remember this ever really being established. I can only think of one person who experimented with name-brand vs generic and found she had results ONLY w/the name-brand. To be on the safe side, I have started this experiment (again, I was lazy the first go-round) using 4% name-brand MN. I'm applying 3x a week (diluted a tiny bit with water for easier application) and we shall see what happens in a month. My normal growth rate is about 1/2" a month.
misspriss April 21st, 2008, 09:41 AM I am trying with 4% walgreens.
Madam Librarian April 21st, 2008, 01:04 PM another consideration: does 2% vs 4% and name-brand vs generic play a role in ultimate results?
I had NO results with Equate brand 2%. I'm thinking of getting one of the combination packages of 2 and 4% brand name Monistat. I'd try a month of the 2% for brand v. generic comparison, then a month of the 4% for brand 2% v. brand 4% comparison (unless my hair falls out or I grow lady bits on my head ;)).
Once I am motivated enough to buy the medicine and then apply it consistently, I'll be glad to keep track and post in the thread. I've just been so lazy with my hair lately.
bridgetc April 21st, 2008, 03:37 PM Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering how do you apply the monistat do you mix it with a conditioner or just apply straight to the hair and I take it you apply to scalp only. Also how long do you leave it on for? Also how do you wash it out?
Thanks
Xepher April 21st, 2008, 04:48 PM Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering how do you apply the monistat do you mix it with a conditioner or just apply straight to the hair and I take it you apply to scalp only. Also how long do you leave it on for? Also how do you wash it out?
Thanks
You just apply it to the scalp and massage it in. Many people dilute it in oils or water to make application easier as well as to use less MN since it's very expensive.
Usually people put it on overnight and wash it out the next day, but the effects last about up to three I heard so personally I wear mine all night, all day, and maybe another night. You just wash it out normally, it's not sticky or hard to get out or anything.
Hope that helped!
misspriss April 21st, 2008, 09:42 PM I put mine full strength directly on my scalp. I am leaving it on for a while, like I put in on....Sunday, and I probably won't wash it out til tomorrow (tues).
hazelceleste April 22nd, 2008, 01:25 AM I started using the 4% monistat this week. I'm only applying it to the top half of my scalp, so I should be able to see if it's doing anything by next month or so.
I use a fine tip hair dye applicator bottle to apply it. I put about an inch of cream in the bottle with 1oz water, shake it up, and apply it to my roots. As long as i don't squeeze the bottle, it drips out slowly enough for my to coat all of my scalp without getting too much on my hair. 1oz is enough for 3-4 applications.
bridgetc April 22nd, 2008, 12:11 PM Thanks Xepher and Misspriss for clearing that up. Does anybody swear by any brand in particular? Also do you use teh cream fro athlete's foot or yeast infection? Is there any difference between the two, i'm guessing just the percentage of micozonale.
suicides_eve April 22nd, 2008, 04:31 PM Good Bye and Good Luck!
Ok ladies (and gentlemen if present)
I have decided to retire from using MN.
My journey began in the beginning of October 2007.
I have been using it for 8 months come May. The point has been reached were i am now 'comfortable in my skin'- meaning my hair is now where i can enjoy it again-past shoulder length w/ non stretched curl .
I began this hoping for growth to help me through the 'grow out phase' of my pixie cut- and i have received it. I totally enjoyed the 1-2 " of growth a month, but now i am done. I am letting it grow at its own pace as the summer months bring faster growth anyway.
To those who are thinking about trying it - go for it ! Really? what do you have to lose? you could say hair but i never went bald or sprouted a vagina on my head or any crazyniss
And those who are still doing it -Good luck and enjoy your growth
i can still be reached for any one with question about it(PM me), and i will probably still pop in an give my :twocents: - heck i might hop back on the bandwagon later down the road, but as of May 1st , i will be retiring my tube of magic:magic: cooter cream for my head and using it strictly for my choochie. An one last time the ever appropriate pirate!:pirate:

To your first point - hooray for you! I am attempting the same thing, growing to just past shoulders from chin. I just started, this is my first week.
As for your second point -
ladystar April 22nd, 2008, 05:30 PM I will start to add Olive oil and Coconut oil to my scalp with the monistat. I have not seen much growth, so far.
Isilya April 25th, 2008, 12:40 PM I decided to try this 3 weeks ago. I have used Daktarin 3 times now (1 inch of cream, undiluted, the night before washing). I was planning on applying twice a week, but I forgot the Wednesday-applications every time .
I didn't notice any growth the first week (which is normal, I suppose, otherwise it would be a real miracle product), but when I remeasured yesterday my hair had grown 0.6 in. Yay! :cheese:
I will continue using Daktarin to see if this wasn't a fluke (or an early summer growth spurt) :).
1MegMeg April 25th, 2008, 01:17 PM A couple of questions - I apologize if I am repeating, but this thread is super long now and I am getting googly eyed trying to read all the pages. :)
1. Do you apply this to wet or dry hair/scalp?
2. Those of you that apply and leave it for a day or two before washing - does it make your hair/scalp greasy? Is it super obvious you have "stuff" on your scalp?
Thank you!
Jeni April 25th, 2008, 01:42 PM 1- either
2- It wasn't noticeable on me, once it dryed. I believe the "off brand" had (mineral?) oil in it which left some people feeling greasy.
1MegMeg April 25th, 2008, 01:48 PM 1- either

Thank you! I think I am going to try it today on wet hair, after I wash. :) I won't wash again until Sunday, so hopefully my hair isn't a greasy cluster* mess over the weekend hehe! I am going to get the monistat brand so mineral oil shouldn't be an issue.
krt1013 April 25th, 2008, 01:55 PM So it seems like people only use this once or twice a week -- is it bad to use any longer?
Jeni April 25th, 2008, 02:02 PM I do 4% 3 times a week. some people were using every other day, and I think a few were using it everyday.
dontcallmejessi April 25th, 2008, 06:54 PM applying to wet hair also seems to help get it on the scalp without getting too much on the hair so you don't get the hair greesies.
allyssa April 26th, 2008, 10:02 AM Here is a link for everyone that is new to MN. I have researched/used MN for 6 months http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=83200
Although I did not measure my hair prior to using MN, I now average at least 1" a month with no headaches/shedding/side effects. If anyone has anymore questions, feel free to ask! Allyssa
1MegMeg April 26th, 2008, 02:00 PM I did my first application of 4% yesterday. I did it on wet hair (after shower). It absorbed right into my scalp - no greasies and no headache yesterday or today. I am excited to see if I get any additional growth! :) I am aiming to use it 3x week.
Future CCC-SLP April 26th, 2008, 05:08 PM Okay! I just read through 27 pages of information and I am now ready to give this a shot. Although I will be a to be a closet applier as my boyfriend and friends will think I've gone crazy putting "coochy cream" on my head! I will have to buy some this week and see how it goes! I'll try for 3x a week.
My only question, which I did not see mentioned in this thread...
is there an odor to this if left on the head? (I noticed multiple people leave it on their head for extended periods) I can handle a stinky head over night, but I don't want to be at work and school with a stinky scalp!
Thank yall so much!

My friends and family already think I'm nuts ("You belong to a forum about hair????"), I am definitely NOT telling them about MN!
I didnt notice an smell. The MN has a smell (a light baby powder scent), but I only notice it when its in the glass I am using to put it on my head. No one has ever said anything about the smell of my hair. I figure even if they did notice, it smells like baby powder, nothing that screams "YEAST INFECTION CREAM".

I have not noticed any smell with this stuff. I have a hair color bottle from Sally's, and I mix about 1/2 ounce very hot water with about an inch of the cream. If you notice the tubes on monostat have a cap on the applicators that sort of screws on so you can close it after using a portion. Then I mix well and apply. Haven't noticed any greasies or any smell. Hair is too early to tell if it is making a difference. My husband in cautiously interested. His hair is thinning, and is wondering if this might help him too. Any gentlemen of this forum tried this?
Suldrun April 26th, 2008, 07:29 PM My roomie opened his big mouth to a mutual friend about MN and what I was doing. I was ready to be embaressed but he was very interested as his hair is thinning.
He got his wife to buy some and the last time I spoke with him he had tried it 5 times. hes not 100% sure but he said he thinks some baby hairs are growing and his wife noticed something also. It could be the placebo effect but his balding spots looked less shiney even to me. So maby it is helping:shrug:
Future CCC-SLP April 26th, 2008, 10:16 PM I'm glad to here that there isn't an odor except maybe a slight baby powder. I'll have to experiment and see how greesy my hair gets. My goal this week is to get a little bottle to apply this stuff and then purchase my first tube of lady cream! AHHHHHH :thud:
Yippie for self check out lines!
Presto April 26th, 2008, 10:27 PM ... My husband in cautiously interested. His hair is thinning, and is wondering if this might help him too. Any gentlemen of this forum tried this?
I'm trying it on my DH too! I'll post anything we notice.
misspriss April 26th, 2008, 11:38 PM I applied tonight, first time since last time. I kinda skipped last wash and well it's been since tuesday that I washed my hair. Even though it is still really short, I don't wanna wash it much. I got inturrupted by company halfway through my MN application though, so half of it went on dry. Then I rewetted my hair and scrunched it with a little curl stuff. The curly keeps it looking less dirty for longer too....so I'm gonna start MN'ing a lot more often, almost daily if I can remember.
birdiefu April 27th, 2008, 08:14 AM The Monistat brand stuff doesn't have any mineral oil, so I didn't get any greasies from using it. I would apply straight from the tube on a damp freshly-washed scalp, or a bit diluted in water with a dropper on dry scalp. It didn't make me have to wash any sooner or anything. I haven't tried non-Monistat brand, so I can't say how greasy it might (or might not) make the scalp in comparison.
Javadandy April 27th, 2008, 09:52 AM I'm trying it on my DH too! I'll post anything we notice.
Hey Presto - thanks! Good luck too. I believe I have had better growth, and I will be measuring shortly. I will report my findings as well. Cautiously optimistic.
Javadandy April 27th, 2008, 09:53 AM My roomie opened his big mouth to a mutual friend about MN and what I was doing. I was ready to be embaressed but he was very interested as his hair is thinning.

Hope it is working for him. I am glad there was no embarrassment. I do this to grow my hair, but I have a very high hairline and if that moves a little south, so much the better.:D
MissHair April 27th, 2008, 09:58 AM Ive been wanting to follow up on my progress with Miconazole but I have to admit I dont measure my lenght religiously, so I dont know the outcome each month of growth. But what I could tell was that where I applied Miconazole grew faster and where I didnt apply, grew slower... My question is.. Is it possible that the hair grows in different lenghts depeneding on where its applied? I had a very very uneven hemline before I did a trim and I think its because it was hard to apply all over my scalp....
misspriss April 27th, 2008, 05:11 PM It takes me *forever* to get it all over my scalp. But I try and cover everywhere. I pin up my hair and let it down layer by layer, etc.
misspriss April 27th, 2008, 10:51 PM Applied for the third time today! Finally told DBF about the coochie cream...he sure does think I'm weird :P But hey, if it works it works. It was kinda hard applying undiluted on dry hair, but I did it. It looks a little greasy, I think mine must have oil in or something. I'm going to wash it tomorrow anyway.
Future CCC-SLP April 28th, 2008, 02:06 PM I applied it for the first time last night to damp hair and I wanted to say that I didn't have any of the side affects like headaches or greasies. I used the monistat 2%. I measured last night at 25-inches so we'll see how it goes! I generally grow .5 a month. I still kept this quiet to my boyfriend :p
Lady_Evalyn April 28th, 2008, 02:08 PM In your hair? I used it once for ... reasons lol and turned out to be insanely allergic. Being covered in hives for 3 weeks was lots of fun!
Future CCC-SLP April 28th, 2008, 02:18 PM oh no sorry about your reaction but yes.... in my hair. Its supposed to help grow faster, we'll see!
sipnsun April 28th, 2008, 03:46 PM Okay, I'm going to measure my hair tonight, and try this tomorrow. I usually get about 1/4" of hair growth per month, so I really need all the help I can get! I'll post again in a couple of weeks to let everyone know how its going. Thanks for all the great info everyone!
kwaniesiam April 28th, 2008, 07:43 PM This weekend I'm going to get some 4% monistat to start using. Would it be okay to use in conjunction with essential oils, particularly a blend of lavender, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, and peppermint? I'm trying to get my hair to fill in and grow some back that I had lost, so this is more of a thickening thing than increasing growth rate.
AnimaSola3o4 April 28th, 2008, 11:29 PM SCORE!
I was at the dollar store today, and came across 'Miconazex' brand miconazole. It's 2% MN in a 1.6 oz tube (45g) for ONE DOLLAR!!! I bought two. :)
Cheap as dirt, really!! I would suggest checking dollar stores for it, especially if the cost of this treatment has deterred anyone. :)
suicides_eve April 29th, 2008, 03:37 PM i would be cautious of the dollar store brand, it is high in mineral oil which can clog pores cause pimples on face/ back ( i know it happen to me:o) i agree it is cheap, but if you can afford it i would go for the monistat imho it's the best of the best.
Mrs_Zombie April 30th, 2008, 09:27 PM so, i've decided to try this again. I just recently moved and i packed away my walgreen's brand monistat somewhere that i can't find. So, as soon as i do i plan on using it again.
I plan on doing things differently this time though, as i am desperate for my hair to grow, i'm going to add a couple of ingredients to the mix. I think i'll be making a paste of the monistat with some coconut or olive oil and a touch of cayenne pepper. Hopefully it'll stimulate my scalp enough to get some growth out of it.
Is anyone still using the honey egg yolk mixture??
Let me know your thoughts on my concoction. ;)
maria_asa May 1st, 2008, 04:28 AM I've now used a 2% miconaloze cream for a month now and I got three times my usual growth. It did, however, also make my hair a bit greasy and also seemed to increase my shedding.
For the next month I will only apply it to my nape area where I have a layer that's about 4" shorter than the rest of my hair.
This will also show if the shedding did come fron the miconazole or if it's seasonal.
Suldrun May 1st, 2008, 09:43 AM I am doing an experiment since I started the MN with no baseline. I stopped the MN on 4/14/08 ( or a few day before) I have a picture on this date and I will take another picture on 5/14/08 to compare and then begin a month of MN done every other day untill 6/14/08. I am hoping this will give me a better idea of what MN is really doing for me.
I have noticed an increase in shedding, its still normal but a lot more then I had while using MN. I also have a bit of an itchy scalp in the front, I have had this for a while and it went away with the MN.
According to my pictures I had a little over an inch a month while using MN but I need to go back and look at my records to really be sure.
wintersun99 May 1st, 2008, 11:28 AM Just an update: I started MN (again, didn't stick w/it the 1st time) on 4/14 (I think) which is 2 days after I had my hair cut back to 16" (more damage removal). I've been using the MN name-brand 4%, 3x a week, diluted w/a tiny bit of water and applied with an applicator bottle to scalp. I measured today, for the May1st measure (I will be measuring quarterly only) and have grown 1/2" so, I'm on track to gaining 1" monthly. I will be keeping track (mostly in my journal/blog) but will post another update as things progress... happy growing!
Naluin May 1st, 2008, 12:09 PM Here is a link for everyone that is new to MN. I have researched/used MN for 6 months http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=83200

Thanks for this post. :flower: I'm planning to do my own experiment with MN in June and I'd like all the information that I can digest.
Electronika May 1st, 2008, 02:56 PM I just read all the posts and even the links to other posts that were related.
I read it all and from what I understand Im just putting this on my roots right? not all of my hair...? Do I need to sleep with a shower cap on?
Thanks!
wintersun99 May 1st, 2008, 04:06 PM You don't need a shower cap - I've found that the easiest way to apply is to use an applicator bottle (like for hair dye) or even better, an eye dropper bottle, mix the MN with a teensy bit of water and apply to your scalp (try to avoid getting your hair, not a big deal if you do, just a waste of the MN) and then massage all around your scalp. Some have noticed that it may increase the growth of your neck hairs (after I read that, I got paranoid, so I make SURE I don't get any on the back of my head, neck) I just concentrate on the top half. I usually apply to almost dry hair (or towel dry hair) I find it makes it easier to massage and I don't lose MN into my dry hair.
misspriss May 1st, 2008, 09:33 PM Okay, I had said the walgreens brand I got didn't seem greasy? Well. I blew out and straightened my hair today (I was feeling depressed, it didn't help, I won't do that again!!) And it was greasy greasy....I guess when I wear my hair curly it just hides it really well. I am gonna CO in the morning anyway and wear it curly because I have a consult with a stylist about cutting curly hair...so I gotta make it curl again. But yeah, GREASY.
Electronika May 5th, 2008, 06:53 PM Thanks Wintersun99!
I bought Monistate Derm today! THIS IS the right stuff right? Miconazole Nitrate Cream 2%. Im eager to try this I just want to make sure im on the right track. I meant to get an applicator to but forgot.
So.. assuming I got the right stuff but dont have an applicator, what is another way to apply this until I get around to purchasing and applicator?
suicides_eve May 14th, 2008, 07:06 AM ok i am back with some more findings- end of april i stopped using monistat b/c i wanted to see what would happen- well i am back to my gooey, flaky, itchie weeping -headed self, i really can't stand it anymore i forgot how bad it really is;sritching doesn't help out either :sigh: i think i will hold out for another week then i will probably go back on it again using it 1x a week and building uses back up as required. it amazes me that before i found MN i put up with this most of my teenage and adult life. as for finding out how much of a growth differnce there is on and of MN i don't think i can put up with the itchyniss any more!
yogachic May 15th, 2008, 08:33 AM For those of you buying expensive Minocozle cream, or how ever you spell that. hee hee. I see they are now selling it at "Dollar Tree" stores. $1 for that, you can't beat that price.
Garnett May 15th, 2008, 08:46 AM Unless I'm missing something, I still have not found a vegan version of this. I've been comparing ingredients from memory, so I could be wrong on some things. I am going to take my list of animal ingredients to the store and sit in the aisle until I find something that will work for me. I want faster growth. I get 1/4" per month, if that, and average about 4-5 inches per year. Even if I could get only 6" per year I'd be happier!
Also, I am SO glad I've been able to read this since the start. Trying to catch up on an 80 page+ thread was not fun
naturechild May 15th, 2008, 08:59 AM I tested my hair and these are my not so scientific results:
started monistat (the good stuff) March 20th 4% untill I ran out and then 2% aprox 1/2 the month on each.
1 inch of cream to aprox 3 tablespoons of warm water shack up and apply to dry hair with a squeeze bottle.
massage well. left in over night and as long as I could sometimes a full night and next day.
apply for one month every 3-4 days
1 inch growth at one month!!! Yippie!!!
I wanted to see what I would get w/o
stopped applying: April 18thish (is that even a word?)
May 15th
NO!!!! GROWTH!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
unless i grow it like crazy in the next three days I got nada... nothing... need I say more!!
I am going back to Monistat asap!
Garnett May 15th, 2008, 02:42 PM I AM TRIUMPHANT!!! I found a creme for athletes foot that is vegan and contains miconazole nitrate 2%. YAY. It also has mineral oil, but I'll ignore that for the time being. FYI, I called Monistat, and all of their products have animal ingredients.
I'll start the experiment the next time I wash my hair. Probably Saturday. Weee!!
DH said he'd even try it if it works LMAO.. and he was giving me such a hard time when I mentioned it a few months ago haha
Ohio Sky May 15th, 2008, 03:36 PM I can just picture this conversation, Garnett! "Id like to try your product, but I dont want animal products on my head!" "Ummm...."
Ms Monnie May 15th, 2008, 06:08 PM I AM TRIUMPHANT!!! I found a creme for athletes foot that is vegan and contains miconazole nitrate 2%. YAY. It also has mineral oil, but I'll ignore that for the time being. FYI, I called Monistat, and all of their products have animal ingredients.
I'm interested... what's the ingredient?
Suldrun May 15th, 2008, 08:05 PM Results from baseline growth for one month. OK I started using MN without a baseline. So I went back and this last month did 2 baseline pictures. All I know is that I never cut my hair for years back in HS and it never got past BSL. My friends hair would grow and they would cut it back every summer and by the end of the summer it was longer then mine:( So I knew I was a slw grower at least compared to friends.
With MN my hair grew a little over a an inch a month. Without it it looks like nothing happened at all, no growth. This saddens me a little, maybe I will necer have knee legnth hair:(
I have pictures and am posting them in my album. They will be up later tonight or tommorow.
Garnett May 16th, 2008, 09:54 AM Monnie :) I don't remember off the top of my head exactly which ingredients, but I do know there were some that were questionable to me. I called the company to ask if anything was vegetable sourced, or if they were all animal derived. She said that Monistat Derm cream, and the 7 day Treatment both have ingredients that were derived from "bovine and porcine sources" Boo for me. I was really impressed that they were able to give me that information, because IMO, not many companies will. I put in a request for a vegan version of their products, which I'm sure will go nowhere.
I ended up with Micatin. It says it cures athelets foot, jock itch and ringworm. Woo!
Ms Monnie May 16th, 2008, 10:17 AM Mmm bovine and porcine, lovely :disgust:.
Maybe you can round up a few more veggies and vegans here to put in requests too, a few more voices might help it happen. It can't hurt anyway.
Garnett May 20th, 2008, 01:35 PM I've applied twice. This ish is annoying to apply! It takes me about 20 minutes to do my whole scalp. I don't know if I'm using enough either. It's a creme formula, and I've thought of mixing it with something else (veg. glycerin?), but I've read on other forums that mixing can make it less potent. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has been discussed!
Hypnotica May 20th, 2008, 02:21 PM :O
Everybody has such elaborate ways of doing this.....I just massage a tiny amount into my scalp after every washing...
talula_fairie May 20th, 2008, 02:28 PM Ok...WHAT?
Monistat on your hair?
Help a noob out and 'splain, please!
Jeni May 20th, 2008, 03:36 PM Ok...WHAT?
Monistat on your hair?
Help a noob out and 'splain, please!
On your scalp, it helps some people's hair grow faster. Try reading the first page or 2 of this thread, it should give you most of the info you need/want.
Jeni
talula_fairie May 20th, 2008, 03:37 PM I tried to read the first couple of pages but I was still confused. I'll go back again. Thanks!
Jeni May 20th, 2008, 05:28 PM That's OK, at least you read some before asking. What would you like to know/what don't you understand. I cant explain the science behind it, but I can give you the basics.
vidgrl007 May 20th, 2008, 06:58 PM ok guys i tried it for the first time tonite.itdid make my head feel kinda warm when i first put it on but went away about 30 min later.ill keep all updated.
Garnett May 21st, 2008, 09:34 AM Hypnotica, how do you just massage it onto your scalp? How is it that easy? I'm all concerned that I'm not getting it everywhere. Halp? hehe
talula_fairie May 21st, 2008, 01:32 PM I guess I was just totally floored and wondered how or if Monistat could make someone's hair grow faster!
(and, personally, the idea of putting that stuff in my hair freaks me out a little! But hey, whatever works)

I don't think I get it everywere everytime, but hopefully don't miss the same spot twice :D
Ok, so I do this when my roots still are damp. I take a small amount of cream on my hands, literally just enough to make the palm greasy. Then I use only the tips of my fingers to massage my scalp. To transfer more cream to fingertips, just wipe your hands together (hard to explain, easy action).

I used to do it this way too - then switched to the nozzle (bottle) method, it's definately easier to be sure that I cover evenly, never could know for sure doing it this way...

If you go to the archives and start at the beginning (the original thread) everything makes a lot more sense. :eyebrows:

30isthenewblack May 24th, 2008, 09:44 AM Ok, I've read most of the archive thread. Someone mentioned buying Monistat 7. I have to order it from the US as I live in Australia. I've looked on Amazon and there are so many different Monistat 7 products and I'm not sure which one is the best value or the one I should buy. Would someone mind having a look at the link and letting me know - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=monistat+7&x=16&y=19 I'd hate to order the wrong thing online. TIA
Garnett May 24th, 2008, 11:06 AM Ahh I see. Thanks Hypnotica. I tried it that way the other day and while I'm not sure I got it everywhere, it was a heck of a lot faster than what I was doing. I'm now on Day Ten. I think I've done three or four applications. I can't wait to measure after 30 days. :D

30isthenewblack, of the items on the Amazon.com search list, #1 and #6 appear to be what you'd want. They are both the standard 2% strength Monistat, which I think is what most of the folks on this thread are using.
I bought the generic version of Monistat 3 from Target (not sure if there are Target stores in Oz!); it has 3 pre-filled tubes with 4% strength miconazol nitrate, like the first product you come to on this list: http://www.monistat.com/MonistatTreatments/3DayTreatments.jsp If you are shopping at Amazon.com, it would be item #4 here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=monistat+3
I don't know if the 4% is any better really than the 2% (other than sounding like its twice as strong), and I haven't tried the product out yet but plan on doing so soon.
hazelceleste May 24th, 2008, 11:06 PM I've been using the 4% monistat for a few weeks now, and as far as I can tell, its making my hair grow faster. The sections I've been applying it to are about 1/4 inch longer than the rest of my hair.
It's also helping my scalp itchies (which I think might be mild seborrheic dermatitis) a LOT. My scalp used to get really gunky after a few days without washing. Now, I'm only getting seeing few flakes when I scritch, even if I go an extra day or two between showers.
fatmoogas May 25th, 2008, 01:16 AM Some very interesting advice here.

Hi Mermaid Girl,
Thank you for the clarification. We do have Target stores but as far as I know, Monistat is not stocked in Australia. I think I'll get the 4% ... I'm a woman of extremes. If I'm going to do this, I have to go all the way :D I'll order it this week & post my results in a month's time.

After falling off my chair looking at the price of the product that MermaidGirl said was the right one and that is minus postage, I decided to get Daktarin Cream which is available in Australia. I ordered it off a website hehe so I wouldn't have to walk into the chemist and ask for it. :cheese:I did a search and noticed an Australian has linked to this forum on the Vogue website. The Monistat movement is moving down under :) Well, Monistat was always used 'down under' but you know what I mean lol.

Rustella May 26th, 2008, 09:18 PM I've joined the thread and have some "special cream" on my hair right now. I finally rembered to buy it the other day while at the grocery store. LOL! :stirpot:
flapjack May 27th, 2008, 12:48 AM I'm thinking about trying this in the next month or two because my hair seems to be hitting the same slow spot it always does between my lower waist and hips. I'm still reading up on it a lot because I'm a bit nervous.

Just remember we are making hair history. When the product finally comes to market, you can look back proudly and remember you were a brave pioneer. It's a story to tell the grandchildren of how you put coochie cream on your head to grow your hair faster. Actually, maybe that will give you a ticket straight to the nursing home. Best not to tell them that one. You don't want to be the subject of show and tell :D

Let's keep it under our hats ... literally :D We don't need DOCS (Department of Community Services) or the international equivalent knocking at our door.
Ms Monnie May 28th, 2008, 02:56 PM Where do UKers get monistat?
You can get 2% miconazole nitrate in daktarin athlete's foot cream. But I also looked on ebay and got name-brand monistat from the US with 4% miconazole. Obviously it was brand new and perfectly sealed from a reputable buyer :p. I think it might even have cost me less than daktarin pverall because you get much more.

Don't worry, I won't tell :eyebrows: Ok, so I've received my daktarin athlete's foot cream on Thursday and I've started applying every night. I've already seen some growth but I will measure in a month's time to make sure. Game on :cheese:
Saranne772 May 31st, 2008, 03:44 AM Ahh I will have to look for some of that and try it out :)
lilalong May 31st, 2008, 03:45 AM I tried again.
When I applied the (diluted) 2% cream last time, I got a terribble headache.
So, a month later I tried again. I didn't dilute much AND.. no headache.
Only problem is, that I bought a cream meant for fungal treatment in the mouth. It leaves my hair slightly sticky, as it is a bit sweet. Since I'm cheap, I do want to use up this tube before I buy any other.
We'll see how it goes.
Elainehali May 31st, 2008, 03:10 PM Fungus of the MOUTH!!!
That sounds like a much more terrible yeast infection.
*prays not to have either*
lilalong June 1st, 2008, 01:28 PM Question for you:
When you apply the monistat, do you rub it in or do you just sort of leave it on your head.
I just tried rubbing it in for the first time and it made my scalp tickle a bit. Not a bad feeling, but I haven't experienced it before. Anybody here experiences the same, or am I going crazy?
suicides_eve June 1st, 2008, 04:54 PM when i first started i diluted it b/c of headache, but then i started rubbing it in, i still get tingles once in a while especially if i apply it after a sugar scrub
whiteisle June 1st, 2008, 09:48 PM I am absolutely fascinated! Who would have thunk this one up? LOL I wanna try now! I read earlier that you're supposed to use the internal stuff, not external. But I've got a small tube of the external and the back says: Active ingredient miconazole nitrate 2%. What's the difference between the internal and external then? Would this work? If not, I'm going to go get the real deal, full-blown, no-kiddin-around stuff. I could never tell DH what I'm really using it for.......he would think I have really flipped out!:p "You're going to put that where???!!??" Ha!
susiemw June 4th, 2008, 11:03 AM I have severe thinning of my hair by my forehead and bought the 4% monistat to use a month ago. used it once. lugged it all over Belgium and Holland while visiting family and didn't use it once (argghhhh) so now I'm back home and started using it
again last night. I mixed it with some emu oil as that helps absorption. (when I tried rogaine, it didn't work at all until
I started using it with emu oil).
I think i'll use it daily or almost daily around the forehead and
temples and I may try to use it a couple times a week on my
full scalp.
I"ll take some pictures so i can have some before and after pics to post.

whiteisle June 4th, 2008, 02:14 PM Thanks!!:)
ladystar June 4th, 2008, 02:52 PM I will be jumping back on the wagon In about 2 weeks.
I can’t go to a wedding with coochie cream on my head . Lol
Next week I am going to henna so I don’t think it’s a good idea to add this to my head before that. Cause I only wash once a week.
I tried this for like a month on and off and I didn’t see much result, I would like to stick to it more this next time to see if it really works for me.
Good Luck to you all!!! :cheese:
Garnett June 6th, 2008, 06:44 PM It's been exactly four weeks since I began and I've got no new growth. I'll check back in a month. *sigh*
30isthenewblack June 6th, 2008, 07:06 PM It's been exactly four weeks since I began and I've got no new growth. I'll check back in a month. *sigh*
What product are you usually exactly? It seems that people have different responses given the product they are using due to Monistat not being available for purchase in their country. I did a quick search in this thread and you said were looking for a vegan product?
tiny_teesha June 6th, 2008, 07:06 PM awww :( I'm so sorry Garnett :(. what a let down. Did you at least notice any decrease in shedding?
Garnett June 6th, 2008, 07:13 PM nope. No decrease no increase, no tingling, no headaches no nothing. I'm a little disappointed to say the least. I am using Micatin which has 2% MN as the active ingredient.
30isthenewblack June 6th, 2008, 07:20 PM Hmmm ... well, I'm using Daktarin cream. I know that I've already got 0.5 inches of growth in three weeks but I only started using the cream in the last week. It will be interesting to see next month if it makes a real difference. I can see new hairs growing at the front and I only noticed them since I've been using MN. I don't know what the opposite of a receding hairline is but whatever that is, I've got it! I wonder if anyone else has had success with Micatin and can report back? Yes, I'm talking to all you lurkers :)
Juliet's Silk June 7th, 2008, 11:41 AM Wow I didn't realize people were using anti-fungal-treatments on their scalp to produce growth.
I stumbled over Monistat because someone recommended it for seborrheic dermatitis on the face and then I started to wonder because I thought it was some kind of shampoo against balding. Lol!
I'm going to start using Piroctone-Olamine on my scalp as a hair tonic against the itching and flaking. The only anti-fungal cream I have here contains Piroctone-Olamine as well.
It seems that there is no german equivalent to monistat, at least Wikipedia didn't show a german entry.
No wait, it's called Daktarin here. Ha!
Do you think I could just use the anti-fungal treatment with Piroctone-Olamine I have here on the flaky patches I have on my hairline, eyebrows etc? I never thought about doing that but figured I just had "dry skin"...
I don't care for faster growth, but I want that itching to go away and I don't complain about increased thickness either...
I did skim the whole thread here (my head is spinning) but none of you uses other active agents, right?
I wonder if it's a good idea to mix Piroctone Olamine with Daktarin, hmm.
ETA: I found a german site that sells "MICONAZOL KSK" cream. It contains 20g and "20 mg Miconazol nitrat
17.37 mg Miconazol"
Is that 2%?
SisterChristian June 7th, 2008, 11:49 AM I wonder if Monistat works because it kills yeast suffocating anti hair germs.
fireflycatching June 7th, 2008, 09:36 PM I wonder if Monistat works because it kills yeast suffocating anti hair germs.
I wondered that too. It is something like that, apparently:
Here's why anti-fungal cream might work to give you faster hairwork to promote hair growth because its oxidizing agents provide oxygen for the scalp allowing it to "breathe" and promote a healthy growing environment. Other antifungal creams have been used for years to treat dandruff and some have reported that it has sped up their hair growth. The main ingredient in Monistat Vaginal Cream is Miconazole Nitrate. It's a synthetic antifungal used to stop fungus. It can growth at the same time.More info here if anyone wants to read :)
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/698579/monistat_vaginal_cream_for_faster_hair.html?cat=69
fireflycatching June 7th, 2008, 09:45 PM Eep I meant to add that maybe the oxygen is killing those yeast germs? :P But I'm no expert. Either way, I started this today, hope it works! The only problem is I won't be able to recharge once I finish haha. I wouldn't want to see the look on my mum's face if I had to ask her to buy me monistat every month! Or even worse, the look on her face if she finds out I'm putting it on my head :P
SisterChristian June 7th, 2008, 10:40 PM That is so interesting. Thanks for sharing.:D
fireflycatching June 8th, 2008, 08:51 AM Eee sorry for the third post almost in a row, but I'm wondering if Canesten works also? haha it's all we have left in the bathroom other than a small tube of monistat which I'm using on my hair now. The main ingredient is Clotrimazole (1%). Or is it just Miconazole that works?
Garnett June 8th, 2008, 10:34 AM If you're old enough to get to a store, you could buy it yourself and keep it in your room. Nobody else has to know you're puttin it on your head :)
Lilibet June 10th, 2008, 08:07 AM Ok, I'm convinced. Next time I'm in a chemists I'm heading down the anti-fungal aisle for gunk to put on my head. LHC, I love you :disco:
30isthenewblack June 10th, 2008, 08:36 PM I thought I'd post a bit of an update. This is in no way conclusive as I've only started measuring my hair on May 11 and my hair was 25 inches. I started using the MN on May 30. I thought I'd measure on June 1 so I could start measuring every month like everyone else and my hair measured in at 25.5 inches. I measured yesterday on June 11 (I live in Australia :-)) & my hair is 26 inches. Anyway, I've had 1 inch growth in a month and I'm taking it :cheese: Thus, from June 1 to June 11, I've had 0.5 inch growth. Not bad. It will be interesting to see what next month will bring when I've used it for a full month.
I don't measure my layers but I should start as I feel the real growth has come in the layers. Overall, the length feels much longer and my shortest layer is now ten centimetres below my chin which is awesome!
Anyone else with any updates?
ladystar June 16th, 2008, 10:27 AM Alright I am starting today :silly:!!! I am going to apply it with coconut oil, and every other day rub it in and wash only once a week!
vidgrl007 June 16th, 2008, 11:29 AM Well guys im out.I started getting the worst headaches:(.I'm glad it's working for you that can use it.I was using the 4%and switched to 2%.Oh,well,I gave it the old colledge try:eek:.
suicides_eve June 16th, 2008, 04:41 PM vidgrl007,
that is a know side effect of using it. Have you tried diluting it? when i first started that was what i did, about a half and half mix in a old hair dye bottle or any pointed bottle for easy aplication.
then slowly work your self up to using it straight
girlcat36 June 17th, 2008, 07:24 AM Jumping on the miconazole bandwagon again! I ran out 2 months ago, but recently purchased some more. I was looking for 4%, but could only find 2%
I apply it full strength, 2-3 times a week. I first tried this to help regrowth in a bald area, applying it only to the bald spot:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/hairpic2.jpg August 2007 http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd63/girlcat36/mayhair2.jpgMay 2008
I have decided to apply it to my entire scalp now, because I need to trim my thin ends, but need my hair to grow fast to recover the lost length.

I wanted to ask this, too. I tried the monistat thing last year but I didn't seem to work for me.
Now I have some Clotrimazole left and don't know what to do with it. I don't want to trash it so could I use it on my head?

suicides_eve June 19th, 2008, 01:53 PM Does any one on this thread go tanning? I Just recently started about a month ago- i still am using monistat. My question to you is- have you noticed any change in your length?
it's weird- one week i will grow like crazy and the few weeks i have no growth at all. I am wondering if the uv rays have any effects on the cream? i know this isn't an explored issue but i would enjoy hearing any thoughts.
i assumed the the heat would help as most of the time i wrap my hair to avoid fading /damage othertimes i am running late and just wanna get a few in the bed before picking dd up from school.:ponder:
Garnett June 20th, 2008, 02:05 PM Since I have not gotten any results applying once or twice a week, I've changed how often I apply. Last week I started doing it this way: put it on the night before a wash, immediately after, and the next morning. I wash my hair about every 3-4 days. Hopefully in a month I'll have some growth.
kwaniesiam June 21st, 2008, 03:43 PM I'm officially jumping in. I got the 7 day treatment monistat brand, 2% solution. I'm only targeting thinner areas, since I want it to help fill in thickness rather than increase growth, but that would be a nice side effect too. If it seems to make my hair grow faster I might start applying it all over. After reading this thread (well most of it) I decided I want to apply it once a day in the evening and wash my hair the following morning. I'll post back if I start to notice a difference!
After this trial run and re-reading some more of this thread, I think I'm going to up it to 4% after I'm out of what I have now. I just applied, it tingles a little but none of the headaches or dizzyness reported. I just squirted some out of the tube and applied it with my fingers. I don't remember finding this, but do you use the external cream as well, or only the kind in the shooters?
jojo June 21st, 2008, 04:42 PM Where do UKers get monistat?
daktarin from boots or superdrug its about £4
kwaniesiam June 21st, 2008, 06:14 PM I'm shocked to report no greasies! :joy: My hair is so thin and fine even the slightest bit of stuff in it makes my scalp show through like crazy and make it look even thinner. I might even be able to get away with applying it in the middle of the day and washing at night. I put more on than originally when I posted too, it didn't feel like enough but still you can't hardly tell there's anything there. Of course I can feel it, it feels like something odd in my hair, but not like a cream, oil, or gunk :D
kwaniesiam June 22nd, 2008, 06:49 PM Does this stuff not rinse well off fingers? I rubbed it into my scalp, washed my hands, and maybe an hour later I put my finger in my mouth (nail biter), and it had this awful taste. :puke:
Jeni June 23rd, 2008, 12:00 AM well on the up side maybe it will keep you from biting your nails??
Ranee June 24th, 2008, 09:32 AM I just bought some daktarin. Geez, 10 bugs for this tiny tube!
But anyway, how do you guys apply it? I tried to put it on my scalp, but most of it just ended up in my hair. Is there a trick to this that I didn't figure out yet?
Milena June 24th, 2008, 11:31 AM Wow I didn't realize people were using anti-fungal-treatments on their scalp to produce growth.

Is that 2%?
Yes, that would be the 2% cream. There are a number of brands in Germany that contain miconazole. I use Micotar, for instance, but there are others. If you google miconazol you'll find them, or ask the pharmacist. There doesn't seem to be a cream without mineral oil, unfortunately.
jojo June 24th, 2008, 01:02 PM Ok guys, I am back on the band wagon! I tried this for a couple of months last year and got good results, but then I got lazy!
Anyway, my mums in the States at the moment and guess what I have asked for a present? Yes you guessed monistat 4% (I used daktarin) she just rolled her eyes when I said it was a fanny cream but I wanted it for my head!!
Anyway, Ive cut and cut and not budging past 24" so I am hoping for 3 more inches of growth by September which will bring me to a full BSL!
Will report back in a months time!
Good luck everybody!!!
girlcat36 June 24th, 2008, 02:57 PM Jojo----you crack me up!
I actually haven't been able to find the 4%!
jojo June 24th, 2008, 04:39 PM Jojo----you crack me up!
I actually haven't been able to find the 4%!
Oh don't say that:( I hope my mum finds some, shes back Saturday, fingers crossed. Say your hair has really come on at the back Mrs, wow is that just with the monistat?
Apparently the monistat 4% is the 3 day treatment one with applicators and its in a blue box, so my friend tells me! she thinks im crackers too!
here catgirl found some on amazon cor its expensive stuff in the US isn't it? its half that price for the daktarin over here, you could try ebay may get it cheaper there? anyways heres a link its the one (i think) which you been looking for!
http://www.planetrx.com/shop/detail.cfm?sku=A5882&rfr=YAH&zmam=1000941&zmas=26&zmac=109&zmap=A5882
girlcat36 June 24th, 2008, 06:16 PM Wow! That is expensive!
I never thought to look on Ebay for it, I guess I could try that.
I use the miconazole as well as scalp massage oil that I mke myself.
I use a carrier oil mix of jojoba, castor, and grapeseed.
To this I add these EO's: tea tree, lavender, thyme, clary sage, cedarwood, rosemary.
Speedbump June 24th, 2008, 08:05 PM While I am not doing this, I have something for y'all you might be interested in: Rite Aid is offering a $4.99 rebate on Monistat products in June! (https://riteaid.rebateplus.com/rebatelistpage.asp?categories=all&jse=yes) (It's rebate #16.) Just saw that and thought of you guyses. :D
ladystar June 27th, 2008, 06:45 AM Thank you speedbump
I haven't been able to find the 4%
Saranne772 June 27th, 2008, 08:11 AM Well Ive just started using Daktarin- but it is only 2%. Is that okay? Ive been putting it on twice a week.
I think this is going to get expensive though! The tube is so small and sure not to last very long!

I have never used it but have read some using it. I think it should be ok. Try to dilute it that way it last longer. I just got my last tube at the 99cent store. ;)

A tube lasts me 10 applications approx, you only need a thin layer and I only used the 2% before and got an inch growth with that:cool:
fireflycatching June 28th, 2008, 07:26 PM I've been using MN 2% for almost a month now, and I got 1 more inch of length! (I usually get 0.3-0.4 inch per month) I don't know if this is some summer growth spurt or if it's actually the monistat, but I'll keep using it.
jojo June 28th, 2008, 07:28 PM thats impressive, well done you and welcome to LHC!
jamisonlcloud June 29th, 2008, 07:16 AM I've fallen off the band wagon and then i got my hair cut. I think now since its summer, I will try again. I got pretty good results the first time, too bad my ends were so split and uneven to be able to really tell my length.
girlcat36 June 29th, 2008, 06:38 PM So am I the only one who is noticing longer and stronger fingernails while using Monistat?
jojo June 29th, 2008, 07:15 PM I have been getting more of meal out of mine than usual; I bite mine!
cheekytweety June 29th, 2008, 07:23 PM Don't people tend to notice better fingernails with silica too?
Ruthless June 30th, 2008, 05:12 AM OK are we talking about the "internal" monistat cream or the external itch soothing one?? I've only ever used the ovules for nether regions. I think this might help my itching scalp
ladystar June 30th, 2008, 07:15 AM Fingernails? I have never heard of that!
suicides_eve June 30th, 2008, 04:40 PM yeah i get a increase growth in my finger nails as well i am all the time having to trim them.
girlcat36 June 30th, 2008, 07:06 PM I am using the 'internal cream'.
ladystar June 30th, 2008, 09:24 PM Wow I didn't know that. So you apply it to your fingernails also?
iluvmy67cuda July 1st, 2008, 04:03 AM OK IM LOST AND CONFUSED NOW LOL. I cant find the origional monistat thread. And im thinking this is something i should try because my hair is soo thin (because of meds, polycistic ovary disease, panic attacks, and chronic stress). Please help me find that thread. HOW do you do this? how to apply it etc. thanks, im retarded at times LOL
girlcat36 July 1st, 2008, 07:32 AM Wow I didn't know that. So you apply it to your fingernails also?
It gets on my fingernails by default when I apply it to my scalp.
ladystar July 1st, 2008, 07:39 AM It gets on my fingernails by default when I apply it to my scalp.
Ok, thank you, I haven't really paid any attention to my nails:rolleyes:. I guess I will now. lol

I very unscientifically apply the miconazole straight out of the tube and onto my scalp. I bend over at the waist so I can apply more to the scalp and less to the hair itself.
I use it about 3 times a week. I put it on at night and do not wash out.
iluvmy67cuda July 1st, 2008, 07:09 PM do you put it on dry hair? and then just wash it out in the morning right? Im gonna give this a try. My hair is really thin on top due to meds, stress and other health problems. im willing to give ANYTHING a try at this point.
jojo July 1st, 2008, 08:21 PM I do the same as girlcat but I put mine on wet hair, as i find it easier as hair is more piecy so I get the scalp and not my hair!
*Girlcat' My mum got the monistat 4% from a chemist and she thinks it cost $8 ish, but she had to ask for it behind the counter. so starting on the 4% tomorrow!
morgwn July 2nd, 2008, 03:16 AM Woohoo! I've finally read through this whole thread AND the old LHC site's one! :D Whoa, I feel like I've read a very long book. ;)
OK, so I'm going through a major growth slow-down over the past few months (I've been stuck around 27" now for two months running) and am now willing to jump on this bandwagon after reading a LOT about it. I do know that I am going to need to at least start off using a water-diluted version because of my migraine vulnerability, but it sounds like people are still getting good results using it diluted.
One question for those in the UK: where are you finding the application bottles? I've found that I can't find anything like that in Boots. Any suggestions?
And finally, I think I may not be able to start until 2 weeks from today because I've got to do a cassia treatment tonight and then my dad is in town for 12 days and I may not be able to hog our only bathroom for long enough to apply. But I've gotten some of the Daktarin cream now and will apply at my first opportunity. :)

Jojo--that's great! I'm going to be embarrassed to ask the pharmacist for the 4%! Bwahahaha!!!
I may have to suffer the embarrassment depending on your report on the 4%.
wintersun99 July 2nd, 2008, 01:26 PM OK IM LOST AND CONFUSED NOW LOL. I cant find the origional monistat thread
The original thread is in the archives on the first page of the main forum... link is below, hopefully linking to the archives will work and the original thread was called: Using Monistat, Holy Moly...growth so fast it's scary!

wintersun99 July 2nd, 2008, 01:33 PM So am I the only one who is noticing longer and stronger fingernails while using Monistat?
nope, this was mentioned before (but I can't remember if it was on the original thread, or on this thread...) I haven't noticed longer/stronger fingernails but I have noticed my cuticles are peeling... not sure that has anything to do with the MN though I have started to ensure that I oil my cuticles now... curious

I think you are right, and possibly it was me that mentioned it. Doh!
Going to check the archive because I hate when I forget stuff I say!
girlcat36 July 2nd, 2008, 02:06 PM And yes, it was me who reported that in November. So I will have to conclude that this stuff does grow fingernails. I am not known for long fingernails at all; usually they are short and brittle. I had a two month break from the monistat(April-May), and I did notice that my nails were once again short. Now they are long again.
suicides_eve July 3rd, 2008, 07:02 AM lol:p had a moment did ya girlcat36?
jivete July 3rd, 2008, 07:32 AM Well I've jumped on too. I'm anxious to start trimming my hair to get rid of the layers (they just make my hem look too wispy now that my hair is wavy and not straight), but don't want to start until I can maintain 25".
I bought some Monistat 7 and mixed with water in an old dye bottle. I think I added too much water as it was pretty runny. However, it did not make my roots greasy. When I looked at the ingredients, they look like mostly fatty acids like the ones you find in conditioner (cetyl alcohol and all).
I'm CO and I've tried searching this thread for info on using monistat with CO. I'm not having much luck. But because the monistat doesn't seem to be greasy, I don't think I'll have a problem.
My plan is to trim a little Aug 1st. I hope I see some fat growth.
jojo July 3rd, 2008, 04:29 PM Jojo--that's great! I'm going to be embarrassed to ask the pharmacist for the 4%! Bwahahaha!!!

Thats why I asked my mum! but I like the monistat better its a lot less greasy than the daktarin but it has given me the itchies tonight, maybe thats my little hairs pushing out of there follicles!
girlcat36 July 3rd, 2008, 04:29 PM lol:p had a moment did ya girlcat36?
Yeah, too many lately. I blame it on the chemo! :D Ha ha, at least I have something to blame it on!
girlcat36 July 3rd, 2008, 04:57 PM Okay, I have just had a microtrim, and this will be the last microtrim until BSL(curly and NOT stretched). With my hair stretched, it measures 26", and I will measure at the beginning of each month with my hair stretched, as this is a far more accurate way to measure my hair.
I am going to use the monistat a minimum of 3X a week.
I will post the new meaurement Aug. 1.
lilalong July 4th, 2008, 11:42 AM I've posted a poll about the frequency of monistat usage over here:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=7960
Pretty please, could you all go over there and vote?
I'm really, really curious about the results.
vidgrl007 July 5th, 2008, 10:02 AM I just started to use it again and am now getting all kinds of new hairs. Im just using it with water and not getting the headaches:p.In a couple of weeks i will try to add grapeseed oil to see if the headaches start back.
Garnett July 6th, 2008, 05:07 PM woopee. According to my DH, I'm now at 23", which is exactly my normal growth rate. Damn. I'm going to try applying daily and see where that gets me. Obviously three times a week is not enough.
jojo July 10th, 2008, 01:04 AM One question for those in the UK: where are you finding the application bottles? I've found that I can't find anything like that in Boots. Any suggestions?

Try a pound shop, you know the cheap and nasty ketchup bottles? they would work just as well!
jojo July 10th, 2008, 01:06 AM *News Flash*
in 16 days I have grown from 24.4" to 24.8"
Watch this space.......waist here i come!
tiny_teesha July 10th, 2008, 04:38 AM When i try this i'm going to buy a tube glue and see if i can get otu all the glue to put my mix inside it (the glue costs only 40 cents)-You know the liquid glue that comes in a glue with mesh at the applicator part? I'm pretty sure it is refillable - if not it is only 40 cents and im sure ill use the glue one day!
lora410 July 10th, 2008, 07:03 AM I need my top layers to grow faster so maybe I will stick monistat back on my head  seriously though, it made only my top layers grow.
vidgrl007 July 10th, 2008, 07:53 AM ok guys, question time:).Do alot of you find you start sprouting new hairs first ,then growth or do you just get growth.tia;)

Really? I was wondering if this was happening to me too (which is great, for me!) but I keep getting lazy and not wanting to spend the money to continue so I am applying so intermittently. However, the back of my hair appears to be growing quite quick on it's own and leaving the layers all over my hair, far behind... I might have to start again, to get them to catch up... good to hear this is working that way for you :)
thankyousir74 July 10th, 2008, 09:33 AM While it's slightly embarrassing to buy yeast infection cream, it's more embarrassing (to me) to be seen buying it every month, or in bulk. Cause I'm totally sure the people at the super walmart will remember me, out of the 50 trillion people a day they see....
Jeni
LOL I've been reading and lurking around the first pages of this thread and have resisted the urge to post something and wait to have finished reading before posting but, idk I just couldn't help but to agree with this. Especially because I was going to go and buy two tubes now hahaha.
But yeah even though I'm not done reading the whole thread since I posted this I may as well say that I'm gonna go and get some monistat today. The current length (18 inches) is very current considering I measured just now so I'll post my results probably two or three weeks from now, maybe a month and read the rests of the posts within that time span.
And I'm thinking of getting some peppermint EO to add to the mixture incase it smells.... but not too much cos i read that it can make your scalp too cold and tingly for comfort. But how I love that peppermint smell.
Well, off to the store!
Hope it works.... :magic:
ladystar July 10th, 2008, 09:48 AM I was using the Monistat on and off. I went and bought the cheap kind you get at the dollar store it’s called Miconazole 2%. I had a little left of the Monistat and have been mixing it together, until I can get more of the real stuff. Been doing this every other day my second week. I have been keeping my hair up so I can’t see the difference just yet.
sedonia July 10th, 2008, 10:42 AM Hi folks:
I am a biologist, but not a medical doctor. I can think of several reasons why using monistat for hair growth is potentially a bad idea.
1. Physiological reasons. Antifungal drugs are metabolized through the liver, and they are known to be hard on the liver in general. I don't know how much stress topical monistat puts on the liver but 1) research probably hasn't been done on the long term effects, since the product is intended to be used for 7 day. Also, the effects on the liver of antifungals, including Miconazoles, can be influenced greatly by drug-drug interactions. People who have to take antifungals internally for long periods of time (for example to treat toenail infections) generally have their liver function monitored carefully by bloodtests, and also doctors pay close attention to other medications being used by these patients.
2. Ecological reasons. Your body houses a community of organisms. If one type is suppressed, others can overgrow. This is why yeast infections often follow antibiotic treatments. Suppression of bacteria allows normal yeasts to overgrow. Yeasts and bacteria don't just grow in the vagina, but in the GI tract, our mouths, and skin. I wonder if there is the potential for the reverse to be true -- if long-term suppression of yeasts could make bacterial infections more likely
3. Evolutionary. Probably the most important reason. Anytime we try to poison or kill pests or disease-causing organisms, natural selection happens. Certain pests or disease agents will have genes that give them some resistance to our meds and poisons. Thus we have proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, insecticide resistant insect pests, and herbicide-resistant weeds. They develop surprisingly fast. Everytime a new antibiotic is developed, a resistant strain of something will pop up within a couple of years. Roundup-resistant weeds popped up within a couple of years of the introduction of Roundup-ready genetically modified crops. A quick search of pub-med found papers in the scientific literature that showed there is genetic variation among yeast strains that cause different susceptibility to azole antifungals. Thus, there is the potential for natural selection to favor those most resistant. You could be selecting for Miconazole nitrate resistant yeast on your body by long term use of monistat to grow hair. Maybe that's no big deal until people who are immune-compromised start getting infected by these.
Just some things to think about, and perhaps research more.

thank you for that little reminder. Everyone who does this, does so at there own risk. Some people are successful , others not so much. Most who have tried have gone through extensive research through thousands of post and articals including anything we could find on the topic.
i agree ; long term use could result in negative side effects (like years of constant use) but i doubt 2 times week sparingly for a few months would have long term damage on the body.
and yes your body could build up antibodies to the antifungl treatment , but wouldn't that again have to be introduced on a constiantly alamost every day like basis?
just my thoughts. I doubt seriously i would continue on for years putting monistat on my head.

Very informative post.
Should always think about trying something different...never know what it may cause.
sedonia July 10th, 2008, 09:48 PM and yes your body could build up antibodies to the antifungl treatment , but wouldn't that again have to be introduced on a constiantly alamost every day like basis?
I'm not sure what part of my post you are referring to here. I didn't mention anything related to antibodies. If you are talking about my reason #3, evolutionary reasons, I am talking about evolutionary changes by natural selection over time to the *yeast* population, not how our bodies react to the antifungal.
Would using monistat 3X week for 6 months cause these changes? I don't know. It probably has not been researched, so you can read all the articles there are and not find a definitive answer. However, I would say it is a valid concern, given what we know about natural selection and yeast genetics.
It is the same concept as with antibiotic resistant bacteria. It is not our bodies that have changed, it is the genetic makeup of the bacteria. The antibiotics don't kill them any more. Why? Because the general public and farmers and doctors don't understand how evolution works; thus doctors prescribe antibiotics to runny-nosed kids with colds (completely ineffective) to placate the parents, farmers put antibiotics in animal feed whether they are sick or not, because it increases yield and profits. The problem is when people use these for trivial purposes with only the short-term benefits in mind, the medicines eventually become useless for everyone, including those who have life-threatening infections.
On the one hand, the development of azole-resistant yeasts may not be as big a threat as antibiotic-resistant bacteria, because fungal infections are generally superficial and non life threatening. On the other hand, we don't have that many anti-fungal drugs. If one or two start failing, people who get serious fungal infections are pretty much screwed.
So yeah, it is an individual choice, but it has environmental implications beyond the individual.
Anyway, I just thought this was worth mentioning since I didn't see any mention of these issues in the thread (I read about 2/3rds of it).
Darian Moone July 10th, 2008, 11:08 PM Hi Sedonia. Welcome to the LHC! :D
This is actually the second thread on this topic. There is one on the old boards that is quite long and contained research articles on the topic. I thought I'd just mention it as you seem to be rather informed on the subject and might find it interesting.
Again, welcome and I hope you enjoy the LHC as much as I do.

vidgrl007 July 11th, 2008, 03:58 PM I have both.
txs:),it seems im expieriening some new sprouting and was wondering if it was normal lol.
Golden21 July 13th, 2008, 06:01 PM I have been using it for about two weeks now and have noticed visible growth. I have not been measuring so far, but as an experiment, I applied only to the hair right at the nape of my head to see how much faster it grew. It worked so well that I am going to start applying to my entire head tonight- that sounds tricky to do though!
happymommy July 14th, 2008, 06:25 AM Nifty!!! I started this the day after I dyed my hair (I know I know bad dye, lol) so I could gauge growth by roots. I dyed on the 9th and started 2% diluted with warm water and a squirt of Africa's Pride ultimate herbal oil.
I've had just over 1/4 inch new growth in 5 days. My normal growth is 1/2 to 3/4 inch per month and has been for the past 4 years.
I'm floored by this!!! As soon as I'm done with the 2% tube I'm switching to the 4% for a trial run.
As an add on, I've had no side effects either. I've applied every night followed by a 20 minute scalp massage while inverted then shampooed out the next morning.
I'm so excited :))
Golden21 July 14th, 2008, 11:58 AM happymommy,
I was surprised how much more expensive the 4% was when I went to get it. I started with 2% from Wal Mart that was only $4. When I switched to the 4%, the amount was way less (like a fifth of the 2%) and was around $13. I bought some 4%, but may go back to the 2% Wal-Mart brand because it is so much cheaper!
suicides_eve July 15th, 2008, 02:46 PM yeah it gets expensive especially if you use it frequently, Another good place to look is Ebay. you can find great deals on the 4% sometimes just make sure to read the sellers feed back - ya never know. I haven't had nothing bad happen but it's still good to check.
word of caution: WIPE OFF EXCESS you will have more hair growth around your neck / temple line if your not careful. Those tiny body hairs will get crazy on ya - true story

I am so glad you said this, I have not been being careful! I will start now for sure!
NurseMama July 15th, 2008, 05:11 PM I am trying to figure out why this would work- don't get me wrong I believe that it is!
Is it based on the assumption that there is a fungal growth of sorts on the scalp that inhibits growth?

yes and "clearing" that fungus enables hair to "breath" and "grow"
some of us have problems with weeping scalps or large scabs, this has help dramatically with 'most'-not all scalp itches
jojo July 16th, 2008, 03:50 PM apparently and stupid me has lost the link but avocado oil also inhibits fungal growth.
I don't know if it works you never know!

I don't think it is known exactly why it works. "Hair growth" is listed among the potential side effects of azole based antifungal drugs. This side effect may or may not have anything to do with its primary purpose of killing fungus. The drug may simply have another effect on the body.
Golden21 July 16th, 2008, 04:42 PM Have any of you worn it outside of the house? I have been wearing it primarily overnight, but have never ventured out with it on my hair. I have noticed that you really can't tell anything is on your hair after applying it, so I think you could wear it out.
vampstero July 16th, 2008, 05:00 PM hi. well im very curious about this. i havent measured my hair i just know i trimmed a whiles ago (bout 5 or 6 months ago) and i always ask how long would it have been.so im going to see how this works out for my gf and then ill try it. ^_^

From what I understand, many do wear it outside the house as they put in on when their hair is still damp from washing and then leave it on for 2-3 days until they wash their hair again and then repeat the process. This is what I'm planning to start at the end of this week on Saturday, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :)
jojo July 17th, 2008, 06:45 AM Yeah I wear it outside the house, I keep mine on for 2 days.
It doesn't grow little hands holding flags which say; " Alert this person has coochie cream on her head!" LOL!!!

i were mine out all the time, shoot i even sleep next to dbf and he hasn't even said nothing-and this has been going on for 10 months!

That wouldn't be an accurate statement for some of us anyway; for me it's foot cream. :bigtongue:
NurseMama July 17th, 2008, 10:30 AM Okay, I picked up some yesterday at Dollar General and I would like to start applying it :hmm:. I have gone through pages and pages of this thread (but not all of it at 40+ pages) and I have found a couple of different application ideas. The hair dye bottle seems like it will work the best for me but I am trying to figure out how dilute to make the mixture. Can anyone give me a consistency idea?
Also, if you do this at night is your hair greasy the next day? Basically, do you need to wash every day if you use this method?
Lastly, is anyone doing CO washing while using the monistat? Does the condish get it out or do you need to use poo as well?
I'm a little scared!:face:

vidgrl007 July 17th, 2008, 11:41 AM I also wear mine outside also. When mine starts to throw up the coochie cream on head sign I just beat it down:Dj/k.

Although I don't use it anymore. I always wore it outside the house I would go to work with it all the time:p, you can't tell, it was up. lol
girlcat36 July 17th, 2008, 05:28 PM My take on the monistat is that if you are prone to fungal infections it can help hair growth by clearing that up.
I have a history of very slow growing hair, and also a history of fungal infection of all kinds(probably due to antibiotic use for chronic sinus infections).
Over the last 10-15 years I have had fungal related fingernail infections, skin infections, oral thrush, and vaginal yeast infections. I have also suspected that I had systemic and scalp fungal issues.
I believe that it can encourage more growth for me by clearing the fungus up. Not sure if it would make any difference for someone without these health issues.
It definately makes my fingernails grow faster, but the jury is still out on the hair.

Yes I think this too. I have always been prone to fungal infections, infact i think i was a mushroom in a past life!!
Funny but I have noticed my nails growing quicker this week, i have white bits!
Trying not to bite them!

personally i didn't like the dollar store brand as it has ALOT of mineral oil in it, i found it greasy, wouldn't dilute right (chunky) made my face and back break out and absorbtion wasn't the best, if you could foot the $$ for monistat go for that instead
i didn't wash my hair every day i was stay at home collage at the time so i got lazy
it should be the consticy of a watery-cream i would start with a half and half and add a bit more water til it gets to that stage

This is exactly what I was coming to post about today. I have major greasy head !!! So the name brand Monistat won't cause the greasy head? Even if it is put on right after washing?

The name brand Monistat doesn't have mineral oil, so it shouldn't cause greasies. I find that it is the least noticable if I put it on while my hair is still wet, just after washing. When I put it on when my hair is dry, it usually makes my hair look somewhat dirty.
suicides_eve July 19th, 2008, 03:06 PM there is a little review of all the brands on the first page i think i tried like 3 or 4 different brands before finally settling on monistat
