Okay, I'm in for 60 days (at least). My hair growth has slowed down and I want to go from measuring monthly to bi-monthly (at most). I wear my hair up pretty much daily anyway.

I do think I'm going to tweak the challenge, though. I am counting half-ups. I usually only wear them once a week anyway. And I am allowing myself a "down day" once in every 15 days. Though, I doubt I'll use it.

As before, I am wearing my hair down to air dry and for bed.

I'm glad to be back in the challenge thread (I've been stalking ever since I left back in April ).

Soooo....

Day 1 of 60: Started out with a dutch braid. In the car on the way home from church it morphed into a braided bun. When I got home I took it down and made a cinnabun.

Sunday was Day 165. I hennaed my roots a little bit in the morning and then popped it all up into a lightly oiled damp messy bun for the rest of the day.

Today is day 166. I have 199 days left in my one year challenge. I have 16 days left until my halfway point. I've attempted a Figure 8 bun today, but I'm thinking maybe it's actually closer to a figure 6 1/2 (it's pretty darned messy). Secured with ficcare. Good enough for me!!!

I get to wear my hair down on Friday if I want to!!!! It's my one and only planned day off.

Catch me if you can, Iggy! :D #168--Started out in an English braid to finish drying then I put it up in a cinnabun, then for a night out at the theatre, I put it up in a Chinese Bun.

Day 167: Still in my sleep braid and I have bad helmet head from the ride in to work today. The plan is to fluff things up a bit and attempt a figure 8. In the event that the figure 8 fails (and it usually does - I have too many little pokey out layers), I'm going for a messy cinnamon with a Ficcare.

Edit: The bobby pins have failed me, and my hair is now restrained in the bun cover with the little clippies. I will definitely try the sock bun again sometime, perhaps with the assistance of my roommate who understands pins a little better.

I started my challenge on May 11. June 11 is my birthday, I'll wear it down that day, and then see if I want to try another month!

My hair was in classic braids May 11, part way through the day I bunned them up together.
May 12 I redid the braids and gave them two seperate buns.

Day 3 - Didn't have to redo my braids this morning! Just spritzed them and bunned them seperately each held with two little claw clippies.

I'm liking this classic braid-bun thing! It's cute, very not-harsh looking, and still totally up.
My red streak is visible in them, which looks nifty, although my long blue streak is hidden.

I suppose it depends on the rules you have set for your challenge! I count drying time, my hair would never dry if I didn't leave it down. I don't wear my hair down all day on washing days, though - 3-4 hours is usually enough for it to dry enough to be put up again.

Day 28: I'm wearing my hair in what I think is a flipped cinnabun. I made it by forming the first loop, flipping that loop up, and then wrapping the rest of my hair around the first loop like a normal cinnabun (except that the last loop was tucked underneath the bun to get it out of the way). I used my chopstick to hold it up - my hair hasn't budged all day! :) Well, my chopstick has twisted slightly, but only 5-10 degrees or so.

I'm trying to do 'wear hair up till it grows 5cm' (which would be about two inches I think), that's when it'd be 90cm long. I'm traveling to Ireland for a week in June and I know I'm going to wear it down there, but apart from the trip, I'm going to try and wear it up. Today is day three :D And my hair is actually down at the moment, but I'm going to do something rope-braidey when I go out tonight.

This is really difficult for me, I'm not used to wearing my hair up at all.

Also, [B]welcome to the challenge Amara!

Well thank you!! I like it here, I could get comfy and stay for a while! :D

Day 5 of 31: Rope braid bun. This is a new style for me and I think it's pretty! Also feels very secure - I think it feels securer than even my trusted mutant infinity bun! (I can't get an infinity bun to look like a figure 8 on me, I call it my mutant bun)

Yesterday I decided this challenge should be accompanied by a challenge to find some new styles! I won't say I'll do a new style EVERY day, because some mornings I know I won't have time, and some styles that are "old" I like too much to avoid. :D But I do want to make sure I try at least 10 new styles during my challenge (which lasts until my birthday, June 11). I'm watching this thread for ideas on what new styles to try! Got some new hair scroos (had four, lost one, now have 7 - I LOVE these things! If you haven't tried them yet, do it! They're cheap and they make so many styles VERY easy) So, new styles: 2 down, 8 to go...

Day 128: It's in a loose-ish english braid. I did leave it down to go fail my driving test after my nap (prefer to have it down for ID pictures), though I -very- loosely braided it with no ties and pinned my bangs back for driving. My air conditioner is broken and I don't want my hair getting damaged while whipping around into my face and impairing my vision.

I had planned a hair down day for today, but it's up. Cinnamon bun in the Ficcare, still very damp from last night's SO wash. Very soft, very shiny and nice! I might give in and wear my hair down tonight for dinner out, but I'm just not sure.

Day 68: English braid
Day 69: Two braids
Day 70: English braid

My hair is still dry and frizzy since I shampooed four days ago. I have somewhat less flyaways, though... Braids are about the only thing that works at the moment.

I have decided to stay in this challenge for a total of three months, thus I have 20 days left now. The reason for this decision is that I originally joined to stop obsess with S&D-ing. It really did help me stop obsess with it, but as the weeks passed by, I noticed increased tangling and have now come to the conclusion that my hair simply needs frequent S&D. Especially since I want to cut away as much damage as possible with S&D only, rather than trimming. I'm beginning to feel like I'm cheating, as I have to let my hair down for S&D-ing. Of course I could just change my rules, but for now I feel more comfortable with having a break from this challenge. Especially since the summer sunlight reveals more damage than I can see in other lights, and I want to cut away as much old damage as possible during the summer months. I will stay for the 20 days left to the three-month mark, with slightly modified rules to allow more S&D. I might very well return to this challenge in the future when I hopefully don't need to S&D so much - or in the autumn when the sunlight gets too sparse for effective S&D.

Day 30 (of 30, kind of): Today was a simple braided bun.

I originally said that I was going to try the challenge for 30 days. I was intending to go longer, but I decided to try 30 days first to see how I liked the challenge. I also liked that my last day (today) was supposed to be the day of my last final and that a design report was due. So the timing worked out well (and I could celebrate by letting my hair down!). Except that my professor decided a week and a half ago to extend the deadline for the design report to next Wednesday, so everything is not wrapping up neatly (though I must say "thank goodness" about the deadline extension). So, since I got it into my mind that I could let my hair down once the semester was over, I want to extend my challenge to Wednesday. I'm sure I'll continue after Wednesday, but I'll probably modify my rules some. But not until Wednesday when everything is over! :)

A warm welcome to the challenge, betsala! And congrats on that new Ficcare! I hope you love it as much as I love mine!

I had planned a hair down day for today, but it's up. Cinnamon bun in the Ficcare, still very damp from last night's SO wash. Very soft, very shiny and nice! I might give in and wear my hair down tonight for dinner out, but I'm just not sure.

Oh, today is Day 170.

AJoifulNoise, your new Ficcare is very pretty. I love that color on you!

thanks islandgrrl! my ficcare is fast becomeing my "go to" hairtoy.

day 2 for me, and my hair is in a folded english braid- fixed with my ficcare of course. :D it is a large maxima in a turquoise color, which i was afraid might be a bit bright ( i bought it on eBay and the color selection was nonexistent), but it looks really nice in my red hair.

Oh can I join in. I know i am a newbie but I am desperate to get my cottie, dry, fine hair in better condition, this could be part of the answer. I only know 4 updos - rope braid, engish braid, french braid and a cinnamon bun so I will need a few ideas if that is ok. First day tomorrow. I am kind of excited to be learning new things to do with my hair.

Day 47: Down day
Day 48: Cinnabun with a Ficcare

I'm not very creative, but I'm getting rather good at making my Ficcare cinnabun look like an actual cinnabun instead of a turd. For me, this is rather impressive. I told my husband that I "need" to go out and buy more Ficcares, even though they are $40 each. He seemed totally okay with this. (We've only been married a little under 2 years--I suppose we should enjoy this while it lasts.)

Thank you. I'm still kind of longing for red, but I'm determined to love my natural color.

Day 8 of 60: I started out with a half-up pony tail. I had braid waves and aparently my hair "glistened." Or so said a lady at my church. :inlove: But, it's raining so my hair went kinda flat and poofy at the same time (woo!) and it's now in a cinnabun with my ficcare.

Night 6 was the first *night* I haven't also worn it up. I was sleeping at a friend's house and all I had were my hair scroos... anyway, I just finger combed my hair up over the pillow and it stayed mostly untangly. I usually braid or bun my hair for the night, because I'm an active sleeper.

I'm wearing my hair in a double-braided crossover updo today. (I know that there is an official name for this but I can't find it right now. It's where you make two braids on each side and then insert a hairstick through them both close to the scalp and cross the braids up and over and wind them around, crossing each time, until you get to the end.)

Day 131: French twist with ficarre for most of my shift. Then a coworker decided to pull my hair (not in a way that would break anything) because I didn't make any coffee... Tried to put it back up in a french twist but it hurt. So now it's in a low, loose, folded over ponytail and I have the hood of my jacket up to protect myself from more hair pulling by the cruel coworker. I may try to make a low cinnabun with the ficarre or make my fifth day curls look decent down before I go take my driving test.

ETA: Yep. Wound up with a surprisingly comfortable cinnabun at my nape held with my ficarre.

And Day 136 technically starts about now. It's in a french twist that's about to turn into a cinnabun... with my birdseye maple Etta Mae fork of course. I think I brought some short bone sticks (only brought toys that won't stab a baby in a head should he headbut me while I'm holding/playing with him) but right now I'm too stressed and pissy and lazy to go dig them out of my bag.

I haven't reported to this thread for a while, because I keep getting those #%&*@ server busy-messages all the time...

Day 71-72: Braided bun, inspired by the gorgeous video from Eresh. To my surprise I was able to make it secure without tieing the braid off - no more damage from elastics in this kind of bun. :cheese:

Day 73: I had a migraine so my hair stayed in my sleep braids all day.

Day 74: English braid

Day 75: 4-strand rope braid. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=557&pictureid=12789) Turned out quite good for my first try. I have had trouble with split ends from rope braids, but it seems like I can get away with it if I leave a very long tassel. I think it's my taper that causes the problem, because the twisting gets tighter and tighter as the taper increases. I can't bun them that way, though - I tried with this one, and while it has potential of making a great bun, I simply don't get enough coils to hide a long tassel neatly at my current length.

And today, day 76, I have had my hair in braids of various numbers and thickness due to a S&D-mission. My ends are breaking like crazy since I shampooed ten days ago, and for me, broken bends cause more tangles than split ends do. And more tangles = more broken bends... I'm not too happy with my ends at the moment. *repeats like a mantra "I will not cut my hair, I will not cut my hair" :meditate:* I know my hair will recover sooner or later, I only have to be patient and do lots of preening to move the sebum down.

I didn't want to put a ponytail holder in my hair, so I just twisted my hair like I was starting a cinnamon bun, then put the stick through the base of the twist, divided the hair into two straids, and did the Chinese bun. Day 10 (21st) Braided bun, then down in a braid (which is "down" according to my personal rules - I'm trying to protect the ends) because my hair toy started to hurt :(
Day 11 (22nd) Figure 8 bun
Day 12 (23rd) Figure 8 bun, will be down tonight for my dance troupe's show, then washed with a soak in conditioner to detangle gently.

I am behind on my pics :( I didn't have a camera for a bit.

Day 15 : 2 braided buns held with one hair stick.
Day 16 : 3 english braids braided into one braid.
Day 17 : Jasmine hairstyle ( caterpilller ponytail) using brown Knotheads
Day 18 : I used a topsytail thing from Claires to flip a ponytail, then I braided it.
Day 19 : Chinese bun. I had to secure the ends with hairpins but it stayed most of the day.

I guess I should go back and redo these styles for my Album since the pictures were part of my goal.

Smokie, I hope this upcoming week goes better for you! :flowers:

Tomorrow I am lounging around all day at a friend's house, so I'll probably take a partial down day just for fun. :) Rest of the day - up in a gazillion little braids I'm working on right now while I read LHC!

ETA: I tried my first four strand braid! Success! It was an easy first try since I have 12 little braids in my hair, I divided them into 4 sections of 3 braids each so they were easy to work with. I don't know what a four strand braid will be like in loose hair but it looks pretty cool with 12 little braids, and now I've got the hang of it! (well mostly)

I'm going to check back over this thread and see if I've used my down day for this week, and if not I think I'll do something nice like a half-up for the birthday party I'm going to later. If not, I'll just comb it and see if I can get an infinity bun or chopstick rope braid bun to stay up.

EDIT: Wound up doing one twist of a bun held by my metal hair slide and then the remaining hair in a rope braid. It looks pretty snazzy!

Day 138: Cinnabun with and without fork.

And tonight is Day 139: Top half is french braided, bottom half is in an english braid, the two halves are twisted together and held with a scrunchie. All this was done immediately after setting myself up with a not-at-home makeshift DT (damp hair + a bit of condish). Figured this way the ends will keep getting moisture and I won't have to fiddle with it much.

*Amara*, thanks for the kind words. It's improving. And I think everything's going to be alright. I still can't talk on public forums about what's going on, but as soon as it's all cleared up I'll give y'all the rundown.

ETA: Wound up with a ponytail for the barbque. Took it down to redo and it looked so pretty that I couldn't confine it completely. Now it's in a cinnabun and about to be braided for bed. The spouses weren't bad to my face but I got the feeling I was gonna get talked about a lot after I left. It was very much like stepford wives only casual and with tattoos. I'm going to join this challenge too in about a week. One of my relatives is graduating soon and I want to wear my hair loose or on a half up at her graduating party but after that it's updo time.

The challenge for me is wearing my hair up at home. After I come home from work I always take my hair down and let it be loose until it's bedtime. Then I do my night braid/bun.

Keeping my hair down makes it tangle, and detangling before I go to bed takes time. I don't really enjoy detangling either. Lets see if I can make my hair tangle less by keeping it up more.

Hmmm...back after the long weekend.

Saturday was Day 178. I wore it up in a french twist secured with the Ficcare most of the day - down in a braid for the afternoon/evening because I had a headache :( Earlier in the day, though, we went to the local farmer's market where I picked up a new condish to try out.

Sunday was Day 179. I washed it in the late morning and used my new conditioner ( a wonderful concoction made by a friend ). Wow, nice stuff and smells dreamy. Used a tiny bit as a leave in and my hair was super. Up in a damp bun to dry most of the day and then in a braid again in the evening.

Monday, Day 180 was a super busy day. Up in a messy bun secured with Ficcare all day while we drained & ditched our ancient waterbed mattress and installed the new one! Did lots of laundry and housework, then did a honey conditioning thing in the afternoon before we went out for dinner. Hair up again in a damp messy bun.

Today is Day 181. Up in a twisty kind of bun that probably has a name, I just don't know what it is. Ficcare.

He's home! I was stressing out and miserable for the last week because the stupid plane his unit was given kept breaking, so homecoming was delayed and I was having trouble getting in touch with him, etc. But it's all better now! He came home last night.

Therefore the first phase of my challenge ended yesterday. So day 140 is moved and now I wear hair up at work and only count work days as hair up days. Even if I do wind up wearing my hair up on a day off, it doesn't count as a day.

Which makes today Day 141: Very messy peacock twist held with birdseye maple Etta Mae fork. 'cause I'm at work.... which turned into a cinnabun with the same fork 'cause it looked awful and felt like it would fall at any moment.

ETA: I will continue to try and sleep with my hair braided. We learned that now that my hair is longer (like, ten months of growth longer) he lays on it far too easily for me to leave it down ever.

Day 25 of 31: Wash day, left it down for a while to dry. When it got to only slightly damp, I combed it out, rope braided it, and clipped the end of the rope braid up with a pretty barrette. On a whim, I flipped the loop this made up around the barrette, discovered that it was really, really, pretty like that, and stuck a couple pins in it in the hopes that it would stay up. If I can figure out how to make sure it stays stable, I might wear this a lot, since it's very nice for how easy it is.

Izzie, thank you! I really, really enjoy wearing my hair down, but I'm trying to go until fall without trimming and my thin ends are starting to drive me a little insane. Also, I don't know if I just notice it more now that I've been wearing it up or if it's really happening more, but I feel like it's constantly catching on things.

Plus, there is the whole "benign neglect" thing. I really just want to forget about the length for a bit so it can get a bit past waist without me watching it constantly. BSL to waist takes *forever* on me! (Stupid long torso!)
